Hi Matt. I wanted to pass on a recent adverse experience I had with round gutters very similar to yours on your new house. I have the 6" round painted aluminum gutters (made by Senox) installed by your same installer, Lionel from Central Texas Custom Gutters, on my house that you built 6 years ago. However, I have seamed gutters coming in 20' lengths as I guess back then the better seamless round gutters were not available. After the snowstorm last February here in Austin, I noticed that the end section of a 27' length of gutters on the 2nd story of my house had been bent down (at the end farthest away from the downspout). I theorized that the weight of the melting snow sliding off the roof likely caused the damage in that area. However, luckily, no other gutter sections around the house, even an adjoining front section of similar length on the 2nd story, suffered any damage. FYI, I tried to get Lionel to come out and give me a repair estimate, but he never returned the message that I left at his office. So, I'm using another local gutter company to repair the damaged section. At any rate, this other gutter company noticed that the gutter support hangers had been spaced further apart in that damaged end section than elsewhere around the house (mine were spaced at a 33" interval everywhere else). However, in that one particular end area where the gutter was bent down, it looks like the original installers had for some unknown reason spaced the last three gutter support hangers at a 50" interval, effectively not installing (or omitting) one support hanger. I believe that one missing support hanger is likely what caused or certainly contributed to the gutter damage on my house (which is costing me $900 to repair). So, I'd like to point out that making sure you get the proper spacing interval for the gutter support hangers based on the expected weather conditions in your area (along with, of course, not omitting any that should be installed) could be very important in preventing future costly gutter repairs by homeowners.

Gutter guards. I live in a neighborhood filled with maple trees. Maple helicopters will defeat all forms of gutter guards. I have tried many different ones over the years even a really expensive "National Brand" one. The one with the helmet...... After I had them come out 4 times to unclog the gutters (that's their guarantee) they gave up and I got a refund. When I re-roofed we just went back to the K style. So I just plan on 2 or three times in the spring getting on the roof with the leaf blower to blow out the gutters. The upshot is I can do a real good inspection on the whole roof and look for any areas of concern.

Hi Matt, love your channel. I’m west coast and we use a lot of Fascia style gutter, not mentioned on your video. Also missing is drip edge considerations, particularly with shingle roofs. There needs to be a a flashing that extends over the gutter roof side edge, preventing water from running behind the gutter. Also, regarding leaf guards, there are more expensive but maintenance free options, such as Leaf Filter or Gutter Glove. These types of filter systems keep all the debris out, including shingle grit, and don’t require periodically removing and cleaning out. Should note, a gutter system only protects the home against water damage if it is functioning properly and not clogged! I was surprised you didn’t dive into this as most of the products you recommend you do so based on performance not price.

Maple seeds pile up on my flat gutter screens, but a long shop vac multi-part rigid extension with a J end does a reasonably good job of quickly removing them at nearly walking speed. And walking on the ground is generally a lot safer than ladders. I do get about a bushel of seeds per 100 feet, though, so a big shop vac is best.

If you do leaf always do micro mesh with the same slope of the roof. Especially when you have shingles because of the grids coming down you want those stay out of your gutters. But you must have a slop otherwise you end up with leaf's in between your gutter guards and roof been stuck and redirecting the water where it doesn't belong. So Matt I highly recommend you fix that on your setup because you will see how much will collect in that "dead space" area fairly quickly.

I don’t know what got me thinking about gutters.🤔 I’m almost always on the Internet. But I wondered what are gutters for anyway? You certainly answered that question. They protect from splash back, they protect the bottom of the house from rot, which could lead to pest entering. This information was very enlightening in that I was thinking it was the top of the house that the gutters protected. Very enjoyable presentation hats off and thank you!!👍🏽👏🏽🙂

I remember in 1970's putting a Sears roll of a type of leaf guard in my gutters. Got it all in and stepped out to street to admire my great handy work. It looked super bad. Aluminum in white gutters and it was so shiny it looked awful. Solution: Can of flat black paint and brush and the guard disappeared! Now another house and I am old. Having water in crawl space issues. May have to put gutters on my 30 year old house. Dread that. Love the look, well, like the look of half round but worry about splash on fascia board vs K style. Also have to do some foundation water proofing. Money is not a huge issue. Knowledge and TRUST IS a huge issue. Must get this right as we are too old for the stress.🦇

Have you ever had experience with rain louvers in lieu of gutters? I have tall (4 story) brownstone. It single pitch roof with just two gutters 75 ft long each. Distance from roof edge to ground is ~90 ft and is unobstructed and the no doorways under the eaves (all entryways are at the ends of building). the Thinking of replacing gutters with rain louvers thus eliminating the need for downspouts. Given the long distance to the ground, my thinking is the water will be sufficiently dispersed to blend in with the normal rainfall. Appreciate your thoughts on this concept.
@fredio54
@fredio54 3 жыл бұрын
Are gutters, and rain water control, not mandatory in your building codes? Modern codes here require buffer capacity build into the foundations, so the gutters feed the buffer and the buffer drains to the sea via the stormwater system, but in a gradual and safe way. They use interconnecting plastic tanks under the building that are all linked together and there's a required capacity per foundation area requirement. Makes total sense as the flooding many regions see in modern times would have been soaked up by soil and trees and floods would have been rare. But now with lots of paved surfaces and roofs much of that water is directed straight to the stormwater system depriving the land of the benefit of it, and loading that drainage system. Buffering it can save lives if done in a widespread fashion. Building science from abroad for you, Matt.

I live in a double-wide in Tucson and it has a 1' overhang on ONE _END_ (not on the front or back where the water actually runs off). It was empty for 7 years, and the bottom few inches of the siding (the press-board crap they made back in the late 90's) was rotted. I've been fixing the sides, but I just got done putting vinyl gutters (it's a trailer house!) on front and back just to stop the water pouring down the sides like a waterfall. It only cost about $300 to do it myself. It's just 2 - 57' straight runs. $1250? No thanks, doing it myself is like paying myself $80 / hour.

Living in St. Petersburg, Russia (with a huge amount of freezing point transition of water per year and a humid climate), when working with drainage systems for classic pitched roofs, most of the attention has to be paid to the problem of ice. What could be more unpleasant than a cubic meter of an icicle that fell on your head? So cold attics, large slopes, no accordions and folds on the bends - and even the cables of the forced defrosting system and a direct outlet from the house directly into the underground storm sewer so that there is no ice under the house.

Same here in the northern US. I'm considering a metal roof for my next house, but they have a reputation (more than with other types of roofs) for large amounts of snow suddenly sliding off the roof. Kind of like comparing apples to oranges. Comparing something like a gutter that needs an open top, is readily accessible, often mounted to a flat square surface, and is mostly just redirecting water without an absolute critical need for water tightness....to a house DWV system that is buried underground, in walls, completely inaccessible in most cases, and needing to last 50 years....isn’t really all that comparable. Edit: I mean, dont get me wrong, if you can afford and put in the most effective gutters like these half rounds then thats awesome, but there is certainly a reason that less expensive gutters are more commonly used, and when installed and maintained correctly work just fine.

Half round gutters were used because it was an easier shape to make than a K style gutter and before made on site extrusion gutters became standard. From a pure capacity standpoint, as well as superior splash back shape, the K style is a more effective gutter inch per inch. But the biggest is "do you want to see your gutters or do you want your gutters to blend into the house" as whether to choose K or half round styles. Then pick the right size and dont be afraid to use 2 different sizes if a long run needs 6" and rest of the house is fine with 5

I heard half rounds don't need leaf guards as they're smooth, round and don't have all the hooks inside of them. My half round system had the option of having a leaf catcher installed at the bottom of the down pipe with a little latch door if they were to be run into a weeping tile to the swale. Otherwise nothing is needed as it flushes right out... But I'm no expert

Those sponge type lead guards.. . yeah take it from a guy that's made good money fixing them. In the future regardless of system you have to clean them off the debris. The screen you power wash out gone in less than half day. The sponge and cap type years after the warranty is gone. Two or three days taking them if to clean. In all cases put screen back on. Because the molds and algae.

I've got the K style and they where seamless, the question I've got is why isn't required to put gutters on the house in FL and TX (South) where the walls are thinner walls. My house was bult out of the junk that is like particle board.

Hey Matt what about having gutter strapping in place before roofing? Then after roof is in place attach gutters to the strapping? The strapping can be nailed thru decking rather than into facia or rafter tails. Thought?

I'm so happy to have found this video! I was wondering why you never use built-in box gutters in your houses? They seem to mesh seamlessly into the Perfect Wall design! I think they fell out of style because of the popularity of vented attics, but in your designs I don't think that's an issue, and it'd be cool to see your eaves keeping water off your houses without the need for add ons like a half round gutter system.

we were quoted 55bucks a foot for leaf guards... guess who climbs up on the roof twice a year. I know of a neighborhood where everyone has 6 inch copper gutter. Ironically its the same neighborhood that the owners of the Minnesota twins owners live in as well as the same neighborhood that owners spend 60k on a new front door.

One of the other commenters mentioned that they're overwhelmed during heavy rain. Based on that, my guess is that since they rely on surface tension to direct the water into the channel, you might need to occasionally clean that curved surface. AFAIK they don't have a practical way of cleaning their interior.
@flanigas
@flanigas 3 жыл бұрын
I would stay away from the gutter covers that rely on surface tension. I have them on my house and in a heavy rain the flow can overwhelm the covers. Plus I still need to clean out the channel in the covers about twice a year.

Something people forget about large overhangs are uplift forces. A 5 foot overhang in tornado alley or hurricane country is probably not a good idea.

Why does the Toro kit not have an adjustable angled end? The Stihl version sure does and takes away the need to angle a very awkward (and when on unwieldy) extension?? Just seems like a poorly thought out product compared to other options on the market.

You said that you can't use dissimilar metals for the gutters or void the steel roof warranty, but aluminum IS a dissimilar metal just as copper is. Why are you able to use aluminum but not copper?
@AlanW
@AlanW 3 жыл бұрын
Probably because of the finish on the aluminum stops the metals from contacting each other. Alu also instantly creates an oxide layer when exposed, so that also stops metal to metal contact and galvanic corrosion.
