Another excellent video! I am glad you mentioned that you try to aim for a spot within the ranges put forth in the GAG. I purchased my copy of the GAG about a year ago, but then felt discouraged because the ranges listed often represent such a huge spread. Your advice gives me a better sense of where I should try to aim. Thank you!💗

Yay! I hope it was helpful! I feel like there are seriously never enough convos about pricing. It can be so nuanced that the only way to demystify it is to talk about it openly and frequently!

Kendyll Hillegas Kendyll! You are so thorough! Thank you for creating these videos. I haven’t heard of the gag guide, I’m going to check it out. I’m new to illustration, I know what my rates are for art commissions. But licensing and children’s book illustration is something I want to pursue LT. Pricing is so complex, especially for me as I have to consider the exchange rate. I need to consider Local clients vs international clients. Professional clients vs self-publishing . Off to watch the other videos you linked

I have a local author that wants me to illustrate his Children's book. I have illustrated children's books before for a publisher I was paid per page this was about 10 years ago. I am a professional artist and do art full time. I have asked the Author (who is working with a big publisher here in town) the questions a few times and he just keeps asking what I will charge. Could you help me with a ball park figure? I am going to go check out the other videos you suggested.

Thank you so much for all of this information this is so helpful! I am wondering how you would recommend going about increasing prices with a recurring client? I accepted a job back in June to do monthly zine illustrations for a small local foods store when I first started my greeting card business. I was selling personalized custom cards for $25 so the client went off of that, and I've essentially been getting paid $100 for one 4.5x6 drawing and one 5x7 which are used in a printed newsletter, that may be emailed as well. I certainly feel this is too low but don't know how to go back for another number after I have already been accepting this amount from them, and also consider myself a novice! Any advice you have would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

What would you recommend when the client is a really small business or a individual person who is just starting a project with really low budget and want to hire you, when you don’t know if they will be able to get the investment back?

Ask for a written contract, then sue them if they don't pay.

You could ask for a deposit payment or staged payments through the process. It protects you if your client disappears part way through the project.

I am in love with this artist, who also happens to be my tattoo artist, to say that I trust her with my life is an understatement. I want to hire her as my illustrator but I also think I just want to make her my partner in this project, would that be wise?

good info, thank you. Can you settle an argument i am having with my roommate? Is it okay to sell an artist's rendition of a movie character, actor or video game character? I say it is, my roomies says nay.... lol.

I think it’s ok because while the idea of the character or its notable traits are not your intellectual property, the way it’s represented is. Also there’s a big difference between making an original artwork and selling T-shirts/posters and you’d have to be doing pretty big business to attract the attention of lawyers.
