I found your channel through your Mira Byler collab, I AM SO GLAD i did! I have been asked several times in the last week through my Etsy shop to work on projects and childrens books but I do not know where to start with commercial pricing it terrifies me! Thank you so so much for putting this information out there I am going to watch the next video now :)

Thank you for another useful video. I'd love to know timelines for projects. For example how long a spot image or a magazine would take, broken down into sketch and final image.

Hi Kendyll. This is actually gold! I still don't know what to do with my artist life but there is a lot of valuable info in this video and it could easily become a reference for artists on how to price their artwork. Thank you for sharing this 😍 😍 😍

I found an old Graphic Artist Guild book from the 90s at a used book store. I wonder are those prices still valid? Or maybe add 20% for inflation over 25 years?

Thank you! Pretty much what I am doing (phew! Though at first I was charging too little. Still do sometimes for offers, promotions (maybe you could cover this in a vid?) but your listing of those 5 requirements and your whole, clear explanation was invaluable. Thank you so much :)

Hi, Kendyll. Thank you for always posting such helpful videos. To be honest, it is easier to understand a lot of things about illustrating world since most illustrator I know tend to avoid talks like this (mostly with reasons that I can understand). I hope you're doing well and keep up the good job!

love the video and while per project is certainly the way to go, I would still add that for the hourly calculation part its good to calculate and subtract what you will lose due to taxes - depending on where you live and how much taxes you will have to pay, that can make a significant different to the original number you should be making to actually take home those clean 50K

this was amazing thank you. figuring out how to do that with my art and this was very helpful. I know it's a busy time for you now with your recent move, but it would be cool to see your new studio once it's fully set up, like an updated studio tour, and also your art portfolio. I just watched the one you did in 2016 and id imagine a lot has grown and changed over the years. Thanks for sharing. all the best

Is there some maximum price limit one has to or should put for their commission? I mean the client also would probably like to have an idea how much they would have to pay approximately or at most. Or is the hourly wage simply for yourself to consider how much the commission is going to take, and by that approximation tell the price for the customer, and perhaps let them know how much it might cost them if they wish to add something to the product or something? Also, if you'd have to learn something small or specific, like a bit of anatomy or some technique for example, would that be charged as well? Would you have to mention about this to the client? What if the client doesn't think the work doesn't match with their expectation? I mean if they've seen some of your work, but either the new piece doesn't click to them similarly, or mayhaps the artist wasn't able to produce similar art than the previous. Maybe though the style can be reproduced more naturally once one is adept enough in art. I'm also wondering how wise it is for beginner artist to demand the same money that a professional does. If there is someone who could do the job in 6 hours vs me in 10-12 hours, would it be wise to ask the same price? I know each has their unique style, but more renowned artist are already likelier to have better representation/reputation, and i would assume that not every client might be too nitpicky if the minutiae of the work matches 100% I dunno, i just feel confused by the idea of online business, even though i'm not probably skillful enough to start my own for a while. I just like to learn things to some extent beforehand, instead of having a big pile of information to sort out at once when it would be time. Perhaps some of this might dissipate when my skills level up

How do you get the info about the scope of the usage and/or find out about the volume of the client's business (knowing their customer base, success, how many units they should sell etc.) Do you request this info if it isn't clear through research and if so how do you go about doing that?

Awesome video, thank you for sharing. My question is: have you ever worked on projects where they pay royalties? Or you try to calculate value in advance and give an exact number? If the latter, how do you calculate the exact value? I understand you take into account those 5 factors but how exactly? Sorry if the question is too precise, of course you don’t have to answer 🙈

The Problem I am having is that as soon as I tell someone what my rates are I usually never hear from them again ... though I'm really not expensive.

For those that are working for someone, keeping your wages\salary secret only benefits the employer.
