FOR CALIFORNIA SUR RON RIDERS: get the power pedal kit from kaniwaba, keep it under 28 mph/don’t cut the green wire, wear a Dot approved helmet… And you are fully legally a class three ebike. Ride respectfully wherever you go, know your rights, repeat them if necessary to officers while respectfully saying you will leave regardless. Also keep an eye out for posted signs on trails and paths. Those signs usually mean only class one and class two ebikes are allowed… In which case keep it at or below 20 mph. And remember… No matter what cops are going to think these bikes look like motorcycles unless you change the physical look, so ride them like the bikes they are and not like motorcycles. If you ride respectfully and adhere to this advice, you should have absolutely no problems :-) hope this helps! Safe riding! :-) also: you do not have to register this bike if you follow the steps I said. If you plan to ride it over 45 to 50 mph everywhere you go, be prepared to register that thing.

In the early 1970’s as a kid having a Schwinn Stingray 3 speed bike and riding them on the horse back trail. The horses got really spooked even if I rode past them at 3-5mph. They were jittery if you walked past them with the bike. I basically had to get off the bike and walk off the trail to let the horse 🐴 by. I also remember the big fights between mountain bikers and hikers back in the mid 1980’s with right of use on the trails. Then you had the horse 🐎 people thinking they owned the trail. Then came along eMTBs and the mountain bikers are pissed 😡. Now you have the eMTBs upset because the SurRons are hitting the trail. Suffice to say, “sharing is caring.” In other words, it’s pretty easy to get this whole thing banned and then your stuck on OHV trails with SxS and 9 year olds with 150cc dirt bikes loosing control on the dirt trails. Not Fun!

@@waynewigger9904 All of them. By definition moped requires pedals, and a crank to be able to peddle. A moped without peddles is a motor scooter I believe by law up until a certain speed bracket. After that bracket you can't be defined as a motor scooter or moped you become a motorcycle. Motorcycles, Mopeds, and Motor Scooters all require being registered and licensed to operate. An ebike doesn't because of the series of things required to be an ebike. A low speed bracket, pedals, and crank, and in most states a weight threshold, and usually motor wattage regulation. These bikes are probably all motorcycles and being ridden illegally.

So quote me some CA vehicle codes, cuz I have an eBike and I read the CVC before I bought it. Street legal, not registered but only 750 watt motor, 28 Mph. I think your wrong. In Europe an ebike not only need pedals , but can’t have above 250w or a throttle , only pedal assist , else it’s by law a scooter. In most countries , some like Poland you can see people ripping with a folding scooter 70km\h on a road and every red light or something they just go into side walk and rips 40km/h there , so from extreme to extreme . Fun is fun , but I once got almost taken dawn by a guy that lost control over his scooter on a sidewalk , 35kg scooter , 100kg rider and goes 50 km\h

Where I live it is legal to ride an E-Bike with up to 300W (I envy the USA limit of 750W), so I'm looking at something with a Bafang Ultra (1000W nominal, 1500W peak, 160nm torque) that has pedal assist and also throttle (it is legal here to have throttle). Basically something that looks like (and is) an E-Bike, but has good power & speed. These SUR RON bikes are too far beyond E-Bikes, super hard to argue with authorities that they are not Mopeds or electric motorcycles. I have a motorcycle, but obviously couldn't ride bike tracks with a 1000cc adventure bike.

Check out the Luna X2 carbon EMTB. I got one and love it. I will go over 30mph but one has to pedal....novel concept! Also, it is pretty easy to fill out the paper work and submit it to make the sur ron a legal moped. Mopeds are not allowed on bike trails

Thankfully North Carolina doesn't have any rules on Ebikes other than Tagged and insured for more than 1,500W. Which is 2hp. Typically I will ride a Surron on low power keeping it around 20-25 mph and only kick in the power for hills and highway riding/towing

In NJ you don't need anything to ride e-bikes. They are non registerable motorized vehicles. This includes ONYX and SUR RON E-BIKES.

For you Sur Ron Bros - Get the new electric pedal kit from Kaniwaba. It has a cadence sensor that will allow you to kill throttle and pedal only to move the bike. Don’t even need the pedal chain part. Three modes. Throttle only / pedal only / throttle and pedal (whichever is faster) basically cadence sensor replicates pulling throttle. Problem solved.

We just get warnings when riding our unlicensed motorbikes. Never been ticketed except riding at night without motorcycle on driver's license. Not true, a ranger collected all our licenses since we were all students randomly selected one and we all pitched in to pay our buddies ticket. I have been wanting to buy a 2000 watt Grizzly dual motors ebike. They are good for fishing trips and hauling gear. If memory serves me they are close to $3k. A Lil expensive but will tackle steep hills and will go up to 90 miles with pedal assist and like 60 to 70 miles throttle only.
