I hear you on clutter. I cleared everything off my kitchen counters two weeks ago, and I'm never going back. A tiny, cramped space now looks spacious and inviting.

MESURE MESURE MESURE!!! I've just pruchased a somewhat expensive hammock stand for my studio apartment, that, unfortunetly, won't fit in my space... URGH! I'm sooooo frustrated... Anyway, I'm glad to know that I'm not alone in making that mistake! I'll follow these techniques very meticulously from now on! Thanks Erikka!

You cant pull furniture 12 inches off the wall in a small space. I've taken on 2 garage to studio apartment conversions and these tips would not work in them. I say floating shelves ,light colors , strategically placed mirrors, non bulky furniture and wall mounted tv make the best difference when living in a tight space. Tip- paint the shelves a shade lighter than the wall and keep the depth between 5 to no more than 8 inches.

thank you for this comment now I found out why my thick shelving looks really bulky! The depth is 12,5 inches, now I/m so gonna change it. Thanks!

I was thinking the same. This ridiculous advice keeps being repeated. I only have 65 inches from the wall to the doorway - the pulled off the wall sofa would look ridiculous.

so true about measuring, I was getting a new kitchen install in my newly purchased home and the designer didn't consider that my 1860 built house had a less than 36" front door and the kitchen door was 30" so my two very large corner cabinets could not be brought in through a door. Fortunately the windows had been replaced in the 80's with tilt in ones. The delivery men were reluctant to lift them through the wide window but with a little persuasion they agreed so I had a happy ending only because I had a 36" wide window that would accommodate the cabinets. I was super careful after that with any furniture purchased to be sure it could fit through my front door

I carry my measuring tape with me at ALL times and I like to make a template off what is going in any area I can move it around and get a feel of the space very easy to do but can save an expensive mistake, a floor plan and all doors and windows and electric sockets marked is a must.and where the sun is at different times of day,thank you for your list I do all of this but some people just have no idea of where to start (my youngest daughter is one ) but it is really not hard take your time ,best wishes from Scotland x

Great advice about keeping your curtains and walls close to the same color which makes so much sense! I'm repainting our condo next spring so this was very helpful. My curtain are a dark gray but I don't want my walls dark. Could I go a little lighter to keep this bedroom light and cozy? Thank you!!

Nicely done! You present great information with nice narration. One gentle suggestion: to make your narration sound even more conversational rather than sounding like you are reading, you may wish to consider pronouncing the words “the” and “a” as short sounds, rather than long sounds- or more simply said, use the pronunciation you would use in normal conversation. Some regions of the country teach reading for some reason with the alternate pronunciation, but as a scriptwriter and dialog coach, I find this makes for a more stilted delivery. Just a suggestion. Thanks!

Can you put a tall armoire that nearly goes to the ceiling in a moderately small living room?? Will it make the ceiling look taller or the space feel cramped??? Ceiling is just under 8 ft.
@Isleskye
@Isleskye 3 жыл бұрын
I think you can do just what you are asking about. In fact it seems a tall piece of furniture may make the room present larger than it is because of going tall instead of small. For example we have small public rooms. Two have tall pieces. In our library is a corner/2 wall arrangement of Ikea Billy bookcases made to look builtin with by mixing styles and adding custom trim. Without looking I’d guess we have at least 7 mixed finish Billy units in there. Even though the crown molding at top wasn’t done right and removed waiting for replacing by a son - It looks fabulous enough to earn many compliments. It was done using 3 versions of Ikea Billy birch natural pieces mixed with bright white units with the custom trim in white with white glass on top doors on two widest units. In the living room is a 7foot piece, maybe a litter taller. It is a wide mirrored back double glass doored display case in whitewashed oak built by the son who’s agreed to replace the bad job crown molding on our budget customized Billy Bookshelves hack. Our bedrooms are large for late mid-century modern houses. One is used as a craft room. On one wall are two Ikea floor to near ceiling Ikea Besta bookcases in white with mirrored back and glass shelves on the upper sections. Again they look great and don’t seem to diminish the room. In the master bedroom abt 14x16’ we have a tall english oak antique wardrobe with a slender mirrored middle door. Despite its wealth of other furniture the room looks expansive.

So when a small space you want people to buy big furniture and pull it 12 in away from the wall..... Zero sense does this make because now you're taking up all the walking space if that big furniture even fits

"Small" is obviously relatively in your world. A 10 x 11 foot room isn't going to allow for a large piece if furniture a foot in from the walls. This was a waste of your breath and my time to watch it. 🙄🤔
