I just find it so funny how similar some people are and you can distill it down to their interests. like when you say "us as artists" and its just completely accurate, like we jump around to projects a lot or have interests in many places etc.

Professional Art Equipment is a black hole for money. But when you start out you need none of that stuff. Pencil and paper, cheap. Sharpies, cheap. Simple water color and paper, cheap. Tutorials on youtube, free. I think especially for beginners learning and trying out different styles and equipment is pretty affordable. People just need to realize that they don't need to start out with the most expensive equipment. But the same goes for other hobbies.

It's such a huge piece of advice. So I'm an original character artist, I have many of them, and I love to tell stories. But there's always a lot of things that I want to try and was just holding myself, maybe because of fear. Now I can clarify what I really need to do, step by step. I want to draw boys more often, and I love to draw girls and fantasy stuff. But I want to learn even more from now on. Thank you!! I'll write and follow my new top 10.

This video actually tells the exact thing I was doing unconsciously for quite a while! It's all about experimentation when you want to try something. I learned so much from 10 years of doing many things like making videos, animations and even making games for fun but I always go back to doing art as its my favourite thing to do. With that improvement, I discover more ideas on designing and concepts. Not that I would stop doing the flexible abilities of me doing other stuff to improve those skills as well as a side choice. Just by one year from making a game, I improved by artwork by expressions, ability to express my emotions through music by studying and even writing from last year is better than the last time I did. I still feel I lacked at some point in time but it was overwhelming to see I improved just by a year while I played around with things I enjoyed a lot. Your advice is well done! I hope you'll able to do more better as well in the future too.

when i bought mid gaomon digi-tablet after drawing with pencil for 5 years progressively and honed own style. the tradicional way didnt apply in digital. i could make things but not in end results i was thriving for. this new learning and keeping up what i knew best broke my though process depriving my skills and after these months i achieved the ''method'' which works in both fields

I need more drawing in my life! I've had such a long time away from it that when I do try to draw I find it hard to stay motivated because the work I do isn't of a standard I enjoy. I need to find that spark, take the time to relearn and improve my work and learn how to draw using references rather than just copying what I can see which is what I used to do and enjoy 10-15 years ago!

I can't tell you how helpful this video is! The tips were great and very helpful. I really latched onto the sampling period idea. I'm gonna be honest, I am not an artist and I got here by accident. But as a high schooler who is currently trying to figure out what I want to have a job in, the sampling stuff I think will genuinely help loads. So thank you!

@mariox707011 ай бұрын
I really liked how you talked about improving even if it's a little at the end while also ensuring that improvement doesn't take forever and how you can start off by doing one thing then branching out to other skills. I'm studying 3D Animation alongside courses relating to game development and production art. I started by doing illustrations and I want to continue improving my illustrations, creating scenes, characters, etc. It's the major focus while also learning skills in similar areas. And as I get better I could use the skills I've learned to possibly create illustrations in my own games or use those skills in animation and having such knowledge if I work with game developers would be really helpful for me. Everyone tries to find that one secret method to instantly get better, but it doesn't exist. The only way to do that is to study and put it into practice. Figure out one thing first and learn other things related to it that they could use to create what they want. It's like a tree going from a sapling into a big tree with several branches.

Thank you for sharing!! this is a very good video and mirrors my own journey! I've been sampling for several years now and still am trying to figure out "my one thing". I think it's really important to not assume what you'll get into because you might find that the idea of drawing something isn't as fun as the process itself. I've learned from my own experiences that, the longer a piece takes, the less I actually have fun. So I'm now focused on comic styles and things that are less rendered. I think the most important thing is to just have fun!! art is about self-discovery and understanding what is FUN for you. Don't chase the algorithm or what's popular! sample the stuff that you think you'd enjoy and own whatever turns out to be the most fun for you. Good luck out there! 💓

very agree on doing one specific thing for a long time to start building an audience. i don't primarily seek engagement or follow as important because i do draw as a hobby, but i've seen a lot of other artist who started after me and start gaining more engagement or follow because of they really tend to draw more often on very specific character and keep experimenting on it. now i'm aware that i really lack of those consistency, might be why sometimes i lose followers and growth so slowly😂 thanks for the tips video! tskr🙏

This tutorial's great for self taught artists! Writing down all your interests and honing it down to the most important ones is ABSOLUTELY KEY. Many will get lost in the vast ocean of information and they end up not finishing any work they're reasonably happy with. I have an incredibly huge list of interest that I've been juggling inefficiently, and it's embarrassing because of the lack of work in the huge span of time I've had.

I’ve been doing anime art since 6th grade but currently in the period of my art journey where I feel stuck, especially since I end up focusing on multiple things in art improvement at once which causes this burnout and as someone who kinda wants to do multiple things (character design, animation, regular illustration and comic/mangas which probably isn’t that good of an idea but mainly animation, character design and regular illustration) I feel like this video and the rest have been helpful for me wanting to get back into art because while it’s mainly just going to be both a side job/hobby to (hopefully) support myself and your videos are giving me the push to go back into studying until I feel satisfied enough that art doesn’t feel like I’m trudging through mud. This topic is my lifetime dillema. I am basically stuck in eternal cycle of sampling (and even achieved some pretty nice stuffs during deeper samplings) without ever stuck in one specialization. I have sampled illustration drawing, character design, pixel art, game design, programming, video editing, general design, drumming, mixing, writing novel, writing VN, making one-shots, making 4koma, translation, UI/UX design, and so on. I managed to get awards/made money/made well appreciated products for quite a number of them, but to this day I haven't managed to realize one that should be my specialization. In fact, my current 'specialization' is that I am good enough at almost everything so I can cover most missing roles and especially organize/coordinate/compile people or assets from different line of works -- which I often think is my actual speciality and where my most successful role in projects often are. Still, getting that kind of position is difficult in proffesional work, and after some time you can't stop on looking at people who specialize at only one for most of their life with envy. That said, I think I should just keep making things and I might eventually find one thing that I could stick to forever.

I feel you. I'm not quite as many, but it's hard to sell yourself when you don't have one great thing. But I believe that there is a place for people with multiple abilities as well.
@BlackScream7711 ай бұрын
I have this exact problem, but I've also learned that I love this widespread approach of trying everything and specialization is something im more against, its unfortunate that in a professional manner specialization is what's really valued. It maybe the opposite of the perfectionism problem, where its a decision paralysis problem maybe... There's so many things I still want to try.
@WirlWind4944 ай бұрын
You're specializing as a generalist and the upside is your broad range of experience. More experience lets you think outside-the-box compared to a specialist, you're more widely useful than a specialist as well. Maybe look into consulting work XD

I really enjoyed your video, there are many things that are true, but what you said at minute 2:46 I feel is not good advice, if someone is a beginner, they should "learn the rules of the game", that is to say draw well something close to realistic or realistic and then start a drawing style. What I want to get to is that I know many artists who started with anime, and currently in what we study (digital animation) is something that should not be a foundation of your skills, anime is a style, not a foundation to start drawing. pd: You have a new sub and I already gave you a like ;D

I stated wanting to do 3D animation, then I did a world of warcraft comic at the the time because I wanted to read more of them. Then I started doing my comic in Photoshop for easier lines and colors. Now I've been a minor web comic artist for 10 years. I find what I really want is story telling and character art. (and I'm madly trying to get better at the art which is why I'm here) So yes, it takes some wondering but one day you'll find that place you call home.
