I can't tell you how encouraging it was to hear you say "I started art late." I've always done art, but I've always struggled with it. I did not have a good teacher in high school, and though I attended an art school, they did not give me formal education like you'd expect - it was very loose and just do whatever. Following disapproval from my family my pursuit of illustration was discouraged and abandoned numerous times throughout my life. To know that someone else can do it later on in life really spurs me on. Thank you!

For me the biggest blocker right now is drawing the body in a desired pose and correct perspective. Should be as simple as positioning a few boxes and cylinders in 3D space, but without a very close reference, it just all falls apart. I think it's important to draw at least one full body pose a day, regardless of what you're working on currently. I got engrossed in a big project and neglected that and I'm suffering now... 😥
@Vrioto

For me, as dumb as it sounds, my biggest blocker is drawing basic shapes. I can't draw shapes but I honestly need to because otherwise my drawings will look back. Problem is, I spent 7 days straight doing everything I could to draw straight lines and circle but I can't seem to

-A quick summary of the Cycle method since it doesn't only apply to anime artstyle : *-Draw :* Basically draw what you want to in general as way to test your current level. *-Reflect :* Observe what's your weakness (flipping the canvas helps) or try remember which part of the drawing you struggled a lot so you can prioritize learning it (e.g., proportions, materials,...) . *-Learn :* This is where you practice your weakness finding references or tutorials, grinding and analyzing what's necessary for you (you don't need to learn every type of clothes or every body muscles). *-Test yourself again with the Draw phase*

I've been drawing since I was really young but had no guidance so my art stagnated once I hit college. It wasn't until I started watching helpful art videos that I've started to improve and yours definitely hit that spot of helpful information and motivation. I especially like your videos because they focus on the anime style, whereas most others are more focused on general styles that are more realistic or western styles. Also how do I find the time to practice art when I'm playing video games all day?!?! xDDD

Well, I'm a late starter myself- just about to graduate the next year, when I will turn 25. Honestly, when you presented "draw, reflect, learn" cycle, I'm quite happy that I figured this out by myself just a few days before watching your video and having finished my first art that took some actual effort! Draw so that actually you have practice, reflect what you did wrong and pinpoint your mistakes, and eliminate them by practising again, but having them in mind (some exercise before may be good!). Thanks for your tutorials, they really helped me have a good start!

I have been doing this method since about February this year, and I can't tell enough about how helpful it is! The biggest thing holding me back was not reflecting on what I did wrong and actively trying to improve it. I would just get frustrated that my art was not the professional quality drawings I was used to and just give up without ever finishing. Ever since I started really pushing myself to finish illustrations, even if I didn't like them, I really started to focus on the aspects I didn't like, improving them, and getting more accustomed to a good workflow. I really need to properly study coloring. I just feel like I'm always picking the wrong colors for skin or eyes and it's holding it back from actually looking like anime art.

I wish this sort of thing was talked about more when it comes to schooling. As someone who has been drawing for years, a lot of things have been hit or miss with me when it comes to things. You don't know how infuriating it is when a professor tells you "You need to draw it how it is" or "You have to color this way because your style shouldn't be using this coloring style". It should be taught more that practicing things is the better way to go and adapting to what you want to do. These are the types of tips that would have been helpful at the beginning of my drawing career and not late into it. (I know it can be changed for it, but it does get a bit harder). Thank you for sharing your knowledge on ways that you had accomplished your drawing goals!

The Draw-Reflect-Learn cycle doesn’t apply to just art, but to all skills in general, just replace draw with whatever skill it is you are trying to learn. Whether it be art, music, writing, or even languages, you have to learn from experience and reflection. To those reading this, I wish you luck on your journey of improvement! ^-^

Frick man! This is the video I needed to watch years ago... I've been making music for more than 8 years now, and I just learned why it has stopped working for me about 4 years ago: I just don't have this "how did I do?" dopamine-driven phase in my process, i.e. when you put the original picture on your own attempt that only relies on your mind foundations. Some thoughts: each cycle should be closed as quickly as possible if you want to learn as quickly as possible. I absolutely love your content man, you gotta keep it up. Cuz at least for me it just turned the world upside-down.

I'd like to build on that point of taking some time away from your drawing to look at it with fresh eyes. There's actually a much faster way to reset your brain to your drawing. Just flip the canvas horizontaly. It will trick your brain into thinking that it's looking at a completely new drawing, and any blunders you made become as clear as day, and thus, easily fixable. It's super effective.

this video has made me realize that I've been doing too much of the drawing step and not enough of the reflecting and learning steps. When I started my main goal was to just "learn how to draw anime characters" and now I'm at the point where I want to make my rendering better, work on my anatomy, find my own style, get better lineart, learn how to draw with backgrounds and complex lighting, etc etc, and I can't get myself to focus on one of those things so instead I just keep drawing. A big problem I also have is not doing studies, every character I draw is a fully colored, shaded, and lit character and each one takes at least 8 hours to do.

I'm so thankful for tutorials like this. I'm somebody who's been dabbling with digital art on the side (was programming main with a degree and now looking to do technical art) for roughly 6-7 years and still feel like I'm only an intermediate. When looking up guides, I feel like the easiest videos to find are the obvious "how to draw the body" of a character. Or the perspective when it comes to backgrounds Which are obvious skill to develop, but to me its like if you practice drawing a perfect square every day for 15-20 minutes you'll eventually be able to whip that out. It feels a lot more straight forward. Whereas the concepts of brush making and technique feels like the real end boss of art. I can look at a piece for minutes, for hours, for days, and still not understand how to replicate the brush and techniques they used. I really want to be able to upgrade my artwork and take it to the next level in the style that I'd like it. Though recreating stuff just feels like such a struggle. Especially when it comes to backgrounds where there's so much layering happening that makes it difficult to decipher what brush is used, when to use said brush, and how to use said brush. This is why I'm thankful for tutorials that don't just cover "ok class this is how you draw the human body." I've got a decent enough concept of this.

I love your analogies and how you explain things. It's kind of insane how the vtuber community led me to actually start working on things I enjoy and wanna get better at. It's all connected as well. I wanted to get better at singing and started to listen to Japanese music I found from various vtubers which in turn made me want to start learning Japanese. Now I'm considering the possibility of being a vtuber, but I can't really pay for a model so I'll have to make my own. Even though I can't draw that well yet. It's a great excuse to get better at drawing cause I enjoy that too. This is just a way too long-winded explanation of how I got to this video lol. I'll be watching more of your stuff :D

Hey Oridays! I don't know if you see this but I just wanted to say thank you. I've been wanting to do Art for a long time, Since I was in sixth grade and as of this year I'm graduated. I never learned anything in my early years including the basics and whenever I made art that was "Good" it was just copying what I looked at and usually took awhile. I eventually went to Art school my junior and senior year and I honestly believe I only got in due to my Photoshop skills. Throughout those 2 years I was lazy and had no motivation as I thought I was inferior to most of my classmates. However I found your videos at a time when I started picking up art again and I've decided I'm tired of being bad now. You've given me a motivational motto and good methods of improvement and now I'm taking it step by step. I'm currently working on everything face wise and also combining it with style study of my favorite Artist Shinichiro Otsuka. Thank you for giving me that push that's long overdue

CYCLE: draw -> reflect -> learn --- Draw in the style you want to be good at, translating from x to y will cause performance hit; try and stylize whatever youre drawing in what you want to draw in --- Post your artwork in public to get feedback; Reflect on your own artwork by taking a 1-2 day break and making a list of the things that need work; prioritize the bottle necks (skills needs most work for overall artwork qual.), prevents plateuas; get expert feedback through hiring

I’d stop drawing for a month now but then when I saw your video it gave me motivation. I looked up a reference of a character I would like to draw and I immediately improved with the eyes and face. TYSM

I like how the information in this video can actually be applied to just about any skill. it's boiled down enough to be easily digestible but also have specific examples related to anime art to keep it on topic. Also, the tidbits at the end about the infinite game principle was unexpected to me, as most people don't reference the infinite game strategy. Pretty cool video 👍🏻

I'm pretty sure this "Draw, Reflect, Learn" thing, works for anything as long as you're able to think, this method could go from software engineering to art, you can learn anything with this method, lol

Really great video! I loved the section about bottlenecks, since it seems that most artists just accept plateaus, and treat it like a natural disaster.

I never actually realize this but when I think about it, it's true. I used to trace art from other people's creation(on paper, I didn't have a pentab back then and digital art wasn't as popular) and even though I said tracing, it didn't end up well. And when I think about it, my art improves when I draw a cosplayer pic and make it an anime and some other things. I am also a univ student in my last years and I too, didn't really liked my uni degree. I have stopped few years of drawing because I had no improvement (and so many uni tasks), and just restarted drawing last year. I bumped into your videos last week IIRC. And this video helps me get my motivation up(probably because I see some similarities from you too). So, Thank you very much.

Thanks for this. I already knew this learning cycle and applied it to many aspects of my life, yet for some reason my brain refused to figure out how to apply it to drawing. I'm still unsure how I 'learn' the ability to pinpoint where I suck and how to find the correct methods/resources to improve, but I guess I'll get into it after some time....I hope? I'm at the end of my first year trying to learn how to draw, and it's been very demoralizing, especially since I love to learn and whenever I learned other things(languages, juggling, etc), I could always and immediately notice my mistakes, where and how to improve....yet in drawing, these obvious markers just elude me completely. I wish I knew why... I will keep trying though, your video helped a lot. Thank you.

During my highschool days, i used to draw anime character as hobby and always wanted to improve my drawing skill, but since i went to college now i cant really get time to practice. Also since i am too used to draw with pen and/or pencil back then, there is the bottleneck of trying to draw digitally. Like how to adapt with the pen pressure, line thickness, brushes type, coloring, making use of the app feature, some stuff like that. Still this video has good advices and hopefully i will make use of it after i finished my study lol
