4 Things That Ruined MK1's Story Mode

I recently finished the Mortal Kombat 1 story mode and wanted to voice my opinions on it. Enjoy :)

To me the story kinda fell off the rails when they revealed that the alternate timeline Shang Tsung was the villain, and started multiplying all the characters. All the smaller character plots which were much more interesting (will Mileena manage to rule despite her disease? Will Li Mei's honor be restored? Who killed Jared? Will Ashrah's sword betray her? Etc.) got thrown out of the window and the plot just started racing through the Deadly Alliance & Armageddon bits.

Exactly. I feel like all of these sub plots were the things that they spent so much time building up on and when we were finally ready for all of it to come together, we got nothing. But who knows, maybe we’ll get blessed with a DLC going over EVERYTHING.

BY FAR you are wrong about Havik. Mortal Kombat X comic was literally what Mortal Kombat X game's story should've been. Havik is akin to "The Joker" in the MK Universe and with the right writers, he has the potential to be a true force to be reckoned with.

Ngl I was expecting the actual boss to just show up after Shang was defeated stomping on both their heads calling them weak before fighting. And I'm hoping for a story expansion DLC rather than having to buy another game just to see where the cliffhanger leads to.

So Nitara is a reverse vampire. The overuse of titans was my biggest gripe. It reminded me of a quote from DBZ when Vegeta went Super Sayain, Gohan exclaimed “Whoa! You know who joined the Super Saiyan club!” Now it’s a “Titan Club”

My one and *only* biggest issue with MK1 was that Dairou and Havik are the *same person* in this new era! OK, hear me out, yes I know out of the many 3D Era Kombatants, Dairou was the *least* popular and mostly forgettable most of the time, but the fact that there was no Chaosrealm and made Havik an Orderrealmer (Seidan) just didn't seem right, *TO ME* that is.

Shang tsung being in the story itself was the main thing that ruined it, after the climax that was mk11 , we need a break from shang, maybe have him appear later on in this timeline, but we for sure didnt need all that titan timeline hopping nonsense

This is a good take. I agree with this. As much as I love Shang Tsung and Quan Chi, Kronika felt like a great way to break free from the same old same old, but resorting back to it (especially considering that we ALREADY got the Aftermath dlc) kind of just feels a little bland, in my opinion.

The last third felt so...off the rails to me (even if I was entertained). Personally, I think they pulled the multi timeline & armageddon card too early. Wish they spent more time fleshing out the "current timeline" even more bc it felt like...a backseater all of a sudden.

I can agree with this. I feel like if you're going to reset the timeline, it's WAY too soon to throw us into Armageddon. It's kind of like they were either using it as Nostalgia Bait or they were just trying to close some doors that were left open within themselves. Either way, I feel like I agree with you.

It's so true when I played the story mode and shao did not win one fight. Megan foxx was pretty bland. The post credit scene was a twist if you think about it representing the four Horsemen of Apocalypse

Havik is much better than kronica and dark kahn. Havik was a high priest of chaos, and chaosrealmers are almost immortal. He doesn't have to be titan to get that main villian status (Considering we have kronica and dark kahn) , Have you played deception, konquest mode and remember how chaos realm is and how people behave there. The realm although not shown properly due to limitations is shaped and twisted in grotesque form. Although I do think it's going to be dlc or if main game , then he is going to be a sub main villian. Because teasing the main villian 4 years prior isn't a good idea unless if it's onaga .

Story has always mattered in this franchise dating back to the first game and there’s a reason that have continued to dump so much time and money making their stories from simple character endings to full voiced and animated endings, to entire action-adventure game modes centered around the story, to their big cinematic story modes.

Gameplay in general is nothing without a storymode and nobody would care about the cool characters if they didnt have a back story in the story mode nobody would care about the feud between sub zero and scorpion nobody would care about why the mortal kombat tournament happened in the fist place nobody would care why lou kang became the chosen one to fight shao kahan without a storymode because the player never went on journey with the cool characters to relate too in order to want to play the game in the first place or hate the bad guys to want to fight them because whats the point then to play a genric fighting game the storymode makes the chracters cool in the first place and is what makes the gameplay good @@kingofdragons7

I am a huge MK fan and I have to add a few more weak points of the story and MK1-World in general: - They could have explain the other realms a bit deeper (a part from Earthrealm and Outworld). Why are so many former Edenian characters suddenly Outworlders (Sindel, Jerrod, Kitana, Mileena, Tanya...)??? - The plot on Havik and characters from Orderrealm came too short and weak. Where is the Chaosrealm? - Quan Chi's new origins seem to be in Outworld, but why does he have connection to Characters like Netherrealm-Demons (Sareena, Ashrah...), Nitara, Havik, who are not from Outworld... - They built up a good storyline around that Dragonking-Army (hinting at maybe Onaga) to then suddenly turn into totally confusing, chaotic Multi-Timelines-Titan crap... Haven't we all hoped and agreed to let this Time-Travel/Multiverse behind, after MK11? Does Netherrealm not listen to the fans? - The final fight felt soooo flat, weak and easy...like every fight before... Why not putting a second fight with a next level End-Boss like MKX or so? - Another weak point of the Multi-Timeline-Story is the absence of other important MK-Characters, that don't appear at all, because they dont make part of the base roster, right? But still that doesnt make any sense. No mention or appearance of Fujin (who was even a minion of Titan Shang in MK11 Aftermath ending), Nightwolf, Shinnok, Jade etc. in all of those million timelines? Cmon. Instead they bring crazy combinations of fighters lol. - Wouldn't it have been interesting to see Jerrod hiding his identity with a mask after becoming Jerrod, so that Ermac could infiltrate and become a good spy for the good guys? But we all saw, that after Mileenas/Sindels chapter it became crazy, and all that Timeline-shit started, so that the well slowly built-up of a war between two relams was cancelled. In my opinion that would have been enough for MK1: Let Shang/Quan be the sub boss and re-awaken Onaga / or Emperor Ying who is then the Final Boss. Now with the real ending of MK1 its like after MK11, there isnt much space left besides a restart. Lets see, what Havik can offer...I mean the Havik from the comics wasn't that bad

I will say, although we didn't get to see a lot of the things we were hoping for in this story mode, it IS just their "first game" in their most recent reboot. Maybe we give them the benefit of the doubt and cross our fingers as we wait for DLC (similar to Aftermath)? If not, maybe they'll slowly start to explain everything with the next installments to come? Who knows what their "big plan" is behind what they've ALREADY released, but I am hopeful to see what might come in the near future. Also, I am very interested to see where they take this whole Havik thing. I see a bunch of comments mentioning that he might go out and bring us Onaga. I am itching to know what happens next and where this will all go.

A few more weak/ missing points: - Scorpion and Sub-Zero: Where did they get their powers from ? Why hasn't Kuai Liang ice powers too? He is Bi Han's brother, so why hell fire? Why does Kuai Liang as Chinese create a new clan with a Japanese name (Shirai Ryu)? - Mileena: How she get the Tarkat-disease? - Great Kung Lao: They teased him in MK11 Ending, but completely left him out of MK1? It's a pity .... I don't understand why they couldn't evolve a story around the time of the Great Kung Lao...because of Johnny's Drone lol??? - Who killed Jerrod ? - Goro / the Shokan: they are way too small and not fearsome

Top ten things that is wrong with the story: 1. Dumb DC Comics multiverse garbage 2. Direct continuation from MK11 3. Villains NEVER get to win a fight (No, villains acting in a more heroic/neutral manner does not count) 4. Characters are terribly misused and many fall off the face of the earth for several chapters including EARTH REALM’S CHAMPION! 5. Still doing the same outdated, crippling, chapter system which means some characters will never win fights, some characters will become useless jobbers after their chapter, characters won’t get satisfying conclusions to their arcs because the story will discard them as they are no longer the focus, and we do not get to use characters in their most iconic forms and with their full kit like with Kung Lao and Kenshi. And to make these glaring issues worse is that they have existed since 2011. At least MKvsDC offered some justification for the chapter system. It is AWFUL and needed to go 12 years ago. 6. Because of this dumb time traveling multiverse garbage that we’re still doing, it makes it so nothing matters in the end. Everything is small and insignificant and what’s even the point of getting invested? 7. The villain is just as stupid as Kronika. And honestly Liu Kang is too. It’s practically canon that being keeper of time makes you the ultimate moron. 8. We never get clarity or closure from many plot points in the story. We never get to see Seido. We never learn how Mileena was infected with Tarkat. We never see anyone actually say they want Kitana on the throne. We never learn who Reptile’s family was. We don’t know how Tarkat is spread. We don’t know who killed Jerrod or how Li Mei was blamed. All things that is important to these characters and we never learn about any of it. Awful. 9. Many things takes place outside of the story as heard by intros(I usually take intros with a grain of salt but this game feels different). Sub-Zero somehow escaped and corrupted the Lin Kuei. We don’t know how. Also he technically did nothing wrong. He was stopped before he could help the sorcerers. What actions of his causes lives? None. Reptile and Ashrah are apparently a thing now even tho they barely interact at all in the story. Reptile says one sentence to her and he’s just sharing a sentiment with Baraka and Kenshi in that moment. Also the family we never see or learn about are apparently a wife and child sooo…he sure got over them quick. Apparently Kitana met her Titan counterpart. Is Kitana’s climb up the pyramid canon? We don’t see this otherwise. I can go on but point is made. 10. A lot of dumb changes that makes 0 sense within this timeline setup they’ve got and it continues to make no sense throughout the story like characters now being other people somehow. Having different parents somehow. Characters looking radically different somehow. Even the where the story takes place makes no sense if you put even a little thought into it. None of this would be that big of an issue if this was a real reboot but it’s not. And this is kind of unrelated but lots of the stupid backstory stuff is terrible like Quan Chi getting his icon skin color because a ghost yelled at him or Havik getting his iconic face because he was dunked in molten rock…but somehow only his jaw is burned. Honorable mention: I mentioned it briefly but I hate the character being other people. It’s dumb, makes no sense, and it lessens them when they’re combined like that. Not only is Havik nothing like Havik, but now he’s also Dairou? Why? And Kuai Liang being Scorpion is awful. Who approved to do this to the series most popular characters? Now they can’t even be called “the yellow one” and “the blue one” anymore. They are completely interchangeable now. It makes no sense in the story either. Which I already went over. And also…Kuai Liang means like fast and cool or something like that! What an ironic name for a guy who suddenly now has fire powers.

Titan Shang Tsung is an idiot who revealed himself for no reason at all, explained what he intended to do for no reason at all, and made little attempt to kill his enemies for no reason at all. Just like Kronika. Liu Kang allowing the most dangerous villains to stick around is a stupid mistake on his end. I can understand keeping some bad guys around and viewing them as fixable like Mileena, Bi-Han, and Reptile. But Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn should absolutely be erased(and he can do that). And if the argument is that he didn’t want to just kill them, how is it any better to have them live miserable lives and inevitably have them turn evil anyways and as we see in the story would have every right because he did indeed conspire against them. And all the idiot Titans Liu brings I’ve does nothing while Shang attempts to break the hourglass. Just tackle him! Shoot him with a fireball! But nope. Like it or not, things simply does not make any sense within their setup. I mean, I shouldn’t expected it to since they are drawing from comic books and those make little sense as well when it comes to their multiverse shit, but still. Like in the original timeline and the last timeline, Johnny Cage for example is 29 in 1992. So how is it possible that Johnny Cage looks to be that age in what I can only assume is modern day due to all the modern tech. What happened here? In addition to changing character’s appearance, names, birthplace, DNA, and powers, Liu Kang can also change when a person is born? And it’s not just this. There are many other examples of things that makes no sense within this timeline premise. But maybe this is just me expecting too much

That’s real. But I made this video on the sole idea that I’ve FINISHED the story mode already. This video is ONLY on the story mode and what I’VE experienced. They’re problems that I, personally, had an issue with. Whether or not people agree is based strictly on how THEY felt about the story. I’m sorry if it feels like I’m fishing for problems but it’s simply my opinions and nothing more. Besides what I’ve stated, the story mode is pretty solid.
