Thanks for talking about being an introvert. I've always wanted to work in a library but do NOT enjoy working with the public. Your comments reassured me that it might not be that bad.

I'm an introvert as well as a library page. I don't have to deal with the public as much as the librarians and assistants. It's not my goal to be here, though.

I am an extreme introvert with an anxiety disorder as well. I was so worried that I wouldn't be able to handle dealing with the public. But do you know what one of my biggest strengths at work is? Assisting patrons on the computer, tablet, phone, etc. And I love it! All that awkwardness and jitters just melt away.

I work at a public library as a page and just wanted to check out this video to see how similar our experiences are! Some things I would like to say about my time working as a page:1.) I really benefit from having experience understanding technology (no degree or anything, but I can figure out how to use new tech pretty easily) things break all the time and our tech person can only come in once a week, so we have to make due with what we have and I often have to be creative about solutions to tech issues. 2.) Patrons who end up losing a book or two will have fines, sometimes some pretty hefty fines, they will likely be mad. I had to quickly get over my own fear and anxiety when it comes to patrons like this, and I had to learn to stand up for myself and my coworkers alike. I was not prepared for or aware that stuff like that happens. 3.) I've had the displeasure to meet some pretty horrible human beings. Being a public library, a lot of people will use our computers to look at illegal stuff online, around other people. The library is also a drug deal spot for a lot of people. We do our best to prevent things like that from happening, but unfortunately, it will still continue to happen. These are just some of the things I wish someone would have told me, but remember that my experience is not going to be the same as your experience, so some of this may not even affect you.

You’re so right about mean people. I work at a public library as a page too and I have encountered some mean people while shelving. One lady yelled at me for not having her favorite author on the shelf, another man yelled at me because he did not agree with our classification system. He actually came back to apologize several days later, but it was still an unpleasant experience. Not as bad as the staff who work the circulation desk though. I’ve heard security being called over (yes, we have guards). But I’ve learned how to handle those types of customers.

I managed a department at a local Barnes & Nobles for 5 years and I'm sure it's different from retail to an actual library but the #1 thing we looked for was not how much you love books (that is assumed) but how great are you at pulling information out of customers to find what they NEED. Often times it was fragmented details they would come to you with or a specific assignment and you had to put your thinking cap on, be thorough to have a positive outcome with many different people from all walks of life. Recommending a book for upselling was just a plus, honestly being able to find what they needed was more valuable. I'm hoping 🙏to go back and work on my masters now.

I’m going to start working at the library on weekdays . After all this is over. It’s the perfect job for me! I love books. I already work at the stables an hour away on weekends. And high school, only have three years left. Thanks for the video. At the library I plan on being a staff member , shelving books 📚

@@daludomination Woahhh what a throwback to the past. Yea I got the job as a library page, worked at it for 4 months. Real soft and easy going job, there really isn't much to worry about other than the first month where there is a bit of a learning curve(where the library's different sections are, how items are to be arranged etc). What sucked was that my manager refused to reduce my shifts which led to me quitting to focus on school. Anyways good luck to anyone who's applying rn.

@hecto Honestly yea. What happened to me was that I volunteered at a library somewhat regularly. Talking to the librarian there, I casually asked if there was any jobs in the area, and she pointed out how they needed a library page at another branch. I got an application and applied. Interview went okay(my first every job) and I still got it(asked to work at the closest branch near me and it worked out!). In short, yea just ask around honestly. All the best!

It's all about how you sell yourself during the interview. There are other skills you can bring to the table such as customer service since that is part of working at a library. It's not all books and the Dewey decimal system. There are videos on example interview questions and what you can say, and THOSE videos mention that you DON'T necessarily need experience. They tell you what you can say if you don't have experience working in at a library. And don't be afraid to do some research too. Knowledge is power :)

This video gave a lot of great info, but I live in Southern California, and my experience and what I've seen is the opposite for entry level positions such as Page/Shelver. No experience necessary. Usually the circulation desk jobs do call for experience preferred but it's still possible to get in those too without direct experience. Yes, volunteering first is always a good idea if you can find that. Please, give it a try! Keep searching.
@tanyasbag

P. S. Each library system is a little different. Some Pages never work at the circulation desk but some systems do have the Pages help out there and also process library cards and answer phones. Some, even if you don't work the check out desk, will still be assisting patrons in the computers, etc.

I worked with a librarian from Australia who had a degree from a university there (I think it was graduate level) and some libraries here would employ her, but the major university library in the area wouldn't interview her unless she got a masters degree from a school in the United States.

I don't know about libaries in US but the public libraries in Australia has a kid area within each adult library. It is a very weird setting because the noise of kids playing/screaming would badly affect other people reading/studying. So I hate going to the public libraries. Does it mean I have to choose academic libraries?
@kamilee4123
@kamilee4123 7 жыл бұрын
Alan W We have kid areas in US libraries as well, as in children's sections, and where I live it's not that bad (it's an EXTREMELY small library however so that may have something to do with it). The other one near me has a separate rooms for kid stuff. So if that bothered you, yeah, academic or university libraries are probably more your style.
