Because an elephant is big and can be dangerous so it's the quickest and safest way(for the poachers!) that tusks can be removed. A pair of tusks represent a years wages to most poachers. When families are hungry living hand to mouth it may seem their best option but it obviously can't carry on! I wonder what will next be targeted if the elephants are lost?

@@lostandfound3588well thats stupid. Elephants help maintain forest and savanna ecosystems for other species and are integrally tied to rich biodiversity. Elephants are important ecosystem engineers. They make pathways in dense forested habitat that allow passage for other animals. So If the already critically endangered elephants become extinct, rainforest of central and west Africa, the second largest rainforest on earth, would gradually lose between six and nine percent of their ability to capture atmospheric carbon, amplifying planetary warming.

Why can’t poachers shoot the elephants with a tranquilizer and saw the tusks off instead of killing them !!?? I don’t agree with this but at least the elephants would still be alive!!

In fact poachers shouldn't even take the tusks in the first place. Imagine somebody drugs you and then steals some of your organs or body parts and doesn't kill you. Will you be happy to live on even after they did this to you?
