In this week's English pronunciation video, I walk you through some simple steps to learn the difference between /ɑː/_vs_/ʌ/.. These 2 English vowel sounds can be very confusing for non-native speakers of English as they sound very similar, and come from similar positions in the mouth.
If you can’t clearly pronounce both sounds correctly when you’re speaking English then you’ll frequently be misunderstood. This can affect your confidence in English, and also negatively affect you in Job interviews. Therefore it’s essential to be able to tell the difference.
I break the video into 4 parts:
Showing you how to make the sound correctly
Comparing the 2 sounds and giving you an exercise to tell the difference
Giving you 5 examples of minimal pairs for the /ɑː/ sound and the /ʌ/ sound so that you can learn to tell the difference.
I give you a 3 sentence exercise that you can use to practice getting comfortable making both sounds.
