As an American, I just wish our language was more phonetically based. The only way I can keep track of the sounds phonetically through IPA is by comparing various British and American articulations. I want to use certain words as examples of how to pronounce /a/ and /ʌ/, but the same words are not phonetic equivalents in British and American English. We also have our own biases based on spelling that affects the way we recognize spoken words. The use of minimal pairs was a great addition! Thank goodness for syntax! Great video, BTW! Thank you!

@LeanEnglishPronunciation I speak a couple of different languages, but it's my first language, English, that prevents me from hearing and adequately representing the nuances in our various pronunciations. Cheers to you for your mental modeling on how you keep track of all the sounds!

Very good and useful video. Such sounds are very confusing for spanish students of English, we only have an "a" sound in spanish.

Me ha gustado mucho el vídeo Ed. Siempre recuerdo que cuando era niña, tenía un complejo con esas palabras, porque para mí se escuchaban igual. Como si fuesen homophones. Porque como lamentablemente, en la mayoría de los colegios no nos enseñan pronunciación ni fonética, cuando nos enseñan Ingles…. A no ser que hayas estudiado en un colegio bilingüe o con profesores nativos. Saludos desde Chile. Ahora, te voy a mencionar, algunas diferencias culturales que hay acá en Latinoamérica, en comparación a otros países. 01: Los Latinoamericanos, saludamos dándonos un beso en la mejilla. Si el saludo es entre hombres, se estrechan la mano. Excepto en Argentina y Uruguay. En esos dos países, los hombres se saludan con un beso en la mejilla. 02: Los Latinoamericanos, tenemos dos apellidos. El primer apellido es el del padre, mientras que el segundo apellido es el de la madre. Excepto en Brasil. En ese país, el primer apellido es el de la madre, y el segundo es el del padre. 03: Los Latinoamericanos, no nos quitamos los zapatos cuando entramos a una casa. Si acá en Latinoamérica, a ti te invitan a una casa, y te quitas los zapatos. Eso es considerado una falta de respeto o falta de educación. 04: Los Latinoamericanos, solemos enjuagar la loza, cuando la lavamos a mano. Acá en Latinoamérica, si tú te ofreces a lavar la loza mano, y al momento de lavarla no la enjuagas o no le quitas el jabón antes de secarla. Te van a mirar feo. 05: Los Latinoamericanos, no nos caracterizamos por ser personas muy puntuales. Excepto en el trabajo, o en ocasiones especiales como un matrimonio o un bautizo. Pero por ejemplo, si tú llamas a un Latinoamericano, para decirle que se junten tal día a tal hora para ir al pub. Lo más probable, es que llegue después de la hora a la que habían acordado. Ahora. Hay algunos Latinoamericanos que si son bien puntuales. Pero son la minoría. 06: Los Latinoamericanos, no solemos organizar las cosas con tanta anticipación. Incluso, en muchas ocasiones, los Latinoamericanos somos de planear las cosas en el momento. Por ejemplo. Un Latinoamericano puede llamarte por teléfono y decirte “¿Te gustaría ir al cine conmigo hoy en la tarde?”. Ahora. En caso de que un Latinoamericano llegara a organizar alguna salida o alguna junta con amigos. La organizaría, a lo más con una semana de anticipación. Pero no con 02 o 03 meces antes. 07: Otra de las diferencias culturales, que hay acá en Latinoamérica, es en cuanto a las relaciones de pareja. Acá en Latinoamérica, el hombre le pregunta a la mujer si quiere ser su novia. Y si la mujer acepta, ahí recién pasan a ser novios. Aunque tú hayas tenido más de 10 citas con una mujer Latinoamericana, aunque ustedes dos ya se hayan besado. Si tú no le preguntas “¿Quieres ser mi novia?”. Ella va a seguir asumiendo que ustedes dos, aun no son novios. Esto se debe, porque generalmente, en la cultura Latinoamericana, cuando un hombre no le pregunta a una mujer “¿Quieres ser mi novia?”. Es porque ese hombre, no quiere tener una relación de pareja seria y estable con dicha mujer.

no change to distinguish /ʌ/ and /ɑ:/, the first is a little bit not pure "a" but the difference is so subtle so it is not realistically in hearing real text, so only length may hel
