Water! It is absolutely vital for every aspect of your daily life and yet it is often taken for granted; that is, until you are off-grid camping in the great Australian outback!
How much water you need on a daily basis is very personal but one thing is for sure, you won't last long out here if you don't have a good plan in place to collect, transport, filter, pump or siphon clean drinking water into your motorhome, caravan or any type of RV.

The best collapsible water containers are from Drifta 4WD and camping, they are 60 litres and Australian made drinking water safe poly canvas bags . Brilliant water storage when you need it as they weight very little, collapse flat and are pretty square when filled so sit stable in your 4WD Worth the money!

Thanks heaps Robert I'll check them out. We've been looking for something that can pretty much live in the back of the car with a hose and tap arrangement so we don't have to lift it out. Especially when we're doing trips with the swags!

A good quality collapsible water bladder with a decent capacity (e.g. 125L +) that sits in the rear passenger footwell for transporting water from a reliable source to your (parked up) caravan tanks is the go I think. That matched with a small 12V pump and hose setup will maximise offgrid stays. The bladder is only used to transport the water to the caravan when unhitched rather than as an additional water storage container since it would be impractical and possibly dangerous (weight) as an additional water storage means. I have this setup in my vehicle and caravan and it works a treat 🤘

Hey Rich, we were going to do exactly that! We looked at a few but couldn’t decide, in the end we just went with what we had at hand. I still think we will get a bladder for the footwell at some stage

Yeah, I highly recommend getting a good-sized, good quality collapsible water bladder to augment your offgrid stays. I also recommend fitment of an Enviro Water Saver which will divert the cold water that would otherwise go straight to your grey water tank, back into your onboard storage tank until the hot water reaches its normal (hot) temperature. Awesome kit 🤘

One other water saving strategy is to try to catch (from your awning) and transfer (into your caravan water tanks) the rainwater during storms. There’s a simple system that you can purchase (can’t recall the name) whereby you can effectively catch the rainwater off your awning and have it filtered through a piece of gauze into a bucket. Unfortunately it only works for awnings with a flap at the end and not the type on my caravan. Even so, I just angle my awning down on one corner into the kid’s wash tub which works ok 😁

I’ve always wanted to rig something up, we have an electric awning and we tend to roll it in when the weather gets bad. However, when the touring slows down and we do more long stays out bush we will look at the arms and legs for the electric awning and also a way of collecting rain water. Great idea!
