Ideally around -12 to -8db Tbh it kinda fluctuates on your setup. Back In the day floor noise was an issue. So you had to record around -10 to -6 db to avoid the self noise from equipment etc. however nowadays as it’s digital interfaces, preamps have gotten a lot better self noise ratios so really you would base the recording input gain level on your environment. If you’re in a nice quiet room with no external noise you could set the input gain for say -12 to -8. If you’re in an environment where you have traffic noise, cars, air con etc then you could lower the input gain to as low as -20. You would need to obviously crank up the headphone output to max, turn the music down in the mixer and turn up the volume fader on the vocal track so you can hear yourself. This way you’d eliminate alot of the environment and get the louder source clearer being the vocal. Once your done recording you bring the audio up to -8db with clip gain or you could use a compression plugin to raise the volume and control the peaks at the same time giving a nice controlled vocal. For any low end noise just roll off 100hz from an eq plugin.

@@VinoBeatz no worries. So The minus (-) is below 0 and (+) is above 0. This would be more for monitoring the input level of your voice in the mixer. So when you are about to record. Enable record on your recording software and speak into the mic or sing. You’ll see the meter jump. So with the gain input knob on your interface turn it lower as your speaking so you hear your voice lower in volume and watch the mixer in your computer. Lower the volume until the meter level is at the level you want, say -12db. It should sound really quiet. Then all you do is turn up your headphones. If it’s still too quiet turn up the master fader in your recording software to a level you can hear and are comfortable with. Just remember to turn it back down once finished. Then once you finish recording just use clip gain if your software has it or use a gain level plugin or compressor to raise the vocal level. Again if you have a nice quiet space just follow the steps above and set the mixer to -12 or -8. If your environment is loud then same steps but go down to -24 / -20
