One trick for building a tall sandwich is to use long bamboo skewers Place the blunt ends of 3 on a cutting board or other surface then start stacking up the ingredients. If when you are finished, there is excess bamboo sticking out, use a pair of wire cutters from your styling kit to cut them short. When colder weather arrives, you can very often find long bamboo skewers in the outdoor cooking departments of stores AND they might be on sale!

Love it. More styling tip please! I’m shocking at styling. It takes me a hour just to lay a napkin down right... grrr! There must be a trick to napkins, if you know please do another video on it :)

For sure! The next three videos are on styling (must-have tools, styling for TV and picking props). And definitely I'll need to do a specific video just on napkins. They are such a pain, but can definitely add so much to an image! Glad this was helpful and looking forward to sharing more soon!

One handy tool to have is a $12 heat gun so you can melt the cheese where and when needed. www.banggood.com/110V-300W-DIY-Electric-Heat-Shrink-Gun-Power-Tool-Hot-Air-Temperature-Gun-with-Supporting-Seat-p-1107127.html?rmmds=search&cur_warehouse=CN

Joanie, you are so cute. I suspect I missed the contest, but I did ask to join the Facebook group. I think Russian dressing has more bite/heat to it, such as horseradish. I'll be doing magnificent Reubens at my shop in Denver (coming soon).

Your photography is Great but, I have never seen a sandwich come out of any Real Deli look like that ! Yes I'm talking about NYC and North Jersey delis ! That is a "picture" sandwich not an "eating" sandwich, which can also be beautiful !

Joanie, If (for example) a restaurant wants you to photograph one of their signature sandwiches, would you prefer to cook, style and actually make the hero in your studio or at their venue? If the answer is your studio, then do you have them bring everything needed (and more) to you or do you shop for similar ingredients? If at their venue, do they understand how much time it takes to prepare, style, light and create the final photograph? In my experience, working at their venue, they usually are in a time pinch which if not managed well can result in compromises. Thanks for all you do. Such a great video!! Love all your videos!! :) Quick question, where can I find the grey backdrop you have used in the video? The one that shows up at 4:19 mins in the video 😄 I've been looking for a plank that color since ages!! Thanks again!! 😘

Thank you so much! So glad you're finding them helpful. So, the backdrop is a double sided board from Erickson Woodworks. The other side is a rustic dark wood surface. To be honest, they're pretty pricey, but I've had it over two years, it's super durable, stain resistant and is made by folks who have a background in food photography: ericksonwoodworks.com/products/concretelight. So, I know that's a terrible answer :( But, the one that's underneath the wood block in that same shot, the one that's on the table top, was a $10 piece of scrap from a laminate supply company. I called them up to see if I could buy their scraps and they were happy to part with them. They're not super durable, but for the price, they're awesome! I'd suggest looking up your local counter top supply company, calling them and asking if they have scrap pieces of laminate that are approximately 21''x34''.

I'll never look at food ads/commercials the same way after watching a video called, "10 Mind Blowing Tricks Advertisers Use to Manipulate Photos". ... Shaving cream, not whipped cream; mashed potatoes, not ice cream; cardboard layers in sandwiches and cakes; motor oil, not syrup...and more. ... [SIGH] ... Heartbreaking. LOL. Excellent videos, Joanie. I'm trying to adapt them to improve my photos of paracord and chainmaille bracelets; quilling; knots; etc. I LOVE your video of homemade backgrounds. I hope to try some of them. I live in Hawaii, so I also want to incorporate Hawaiian scenery in a blurred background-ish way. tana.ii on Instagram (a very short gallery)

Im shooting for a client on friday and Im a little stressed as it is my first time doing food, i have been watching your videos and been practicing, would you be willing to run me through your setup for this shot? also the clients food is mexican so tacos and that sort of thing. would it be better to shoot the food straight on like you have done for the sandwich or more elevated at an angle?
