Middle school is where I learned to hate math….the teacher only gave attention to the students who knew how to do the mathematics he was teaching. For students like me, who were very shy and never wanted to bring attention to myself, it was like being invisible. Not once all year did the teacher ask me (before, during, or after class) if I wanted help…even though I was failing the class from very early on. One teacher began the lifelong math phobia. I do appreciate your videos. Thank you.

Thanks to your videos I did know how to this. On the other hand , Its been 50 years since my last math class ( college calculus) and I’ve never had a reason to do such a problem in real life.

This is an extremely long way to a very simple answer. Even if I didn't understand how logarithms work I could always just use iterative interpolation to get an answer as accurate as I need.

Greetings. The expression is rewritten as Log 4^y= Log 10. YLog4 = Log 10, and Y= Log 10/Log4 = 1/.6021=1.6610.

Just a suggestion, I probably introduce Ln instead of Log and directly explain how to solve it as your video from 13:20 onwards.

Your answer is to "break out the calculator". How do you do it without a calculator??
@rick420buzz Жыл бұрын
The traditional way was to use the log table in the back of your math book.
@jerry2357 Жыл бұрын
To expand on the answer from @rick420buzz, you use the table of common logarithms (i.e. logs to the base 10). You don't need to look up log(10), because it's 1 by definition. So you only need to look up log(4). If you want to do the whole thing using log tables (i.e. if you're a glutton for punishment), you then look up the log of log(4). log(1)=0. You can divide by subtracting logs: log(x/y)=log(x)-log(y), so in this case log(Y)=0-log(log(4)). Having worked out what log(Y) is, you use the antilog table to look up what Y is, based on your calculated log(Y). I'm old enough to have done this at school, because we weren't allowed to use calculators in exams until I was 16. Using a calculator is a LOT easier!

You memorise the answer on the calculator, so you don't need a calculator when that particular question comes up in the future

Slide rule. I guess that’s sort of a calculator, though.

The reason I had such a hard time with math is because teachers would say things like; you can just bring the Y down, such that…Ylog 4 = …because it’s the property of logs…I’m sorry why is that the property of logs??? What if the equation was 4 to the power Y, which is in turn to the power of X. Now how does the property of logs work? I had an advance calculus class in college and the math teacher broke us up into thirds, chemistry majors (me), physics majors and math majors, then taught us the calculus we needed to know for our discipline. It was the first time I really understood calculus.

The point of these videos is not "to have fun." The point is to learn something new to you.
@maureenwilberforce9129 Жыл бұрын
You are not the only one this video is for. This is also for people who are trying to refresh their knowledge in math. That is the whole point of these basic math videos, and is very beneficial for those of us who have forgotten how to solve basic problems. Clearly that isn't you, so rather than making a negative comment, why not skip this types of videos and move on to more advanced math videos. It is as simple as that.
@jamesharmon4994 Жыл бұрын
@maureenwilberforce9129 Agreed. The problem with most math classes is that all-too-often, the teacher tries to spit out as much information in a class as possible and skips explaining the "why" behind the reasons for doing things. As you see here, the "why" can take time and explains the reason it is skipped so often.
