On iPad there isn’t a shortcut like Ctrl J. The option you have is to either go to the Edit menu and hit duplicate or to use two fingers on the screen and drag the item you want to duplicate (this second one isn’t useful if you want something in the exact same place)

Thanks for the video, Bear! Question - with the first effect (knife tool) - would I hold down the shift while drawing the cut so it would be a straight line? Or is there another way?

Holding shift will keep the line horizontal or at 45 degree angle. I've not found a way to keep the line straight. When you have the knife too selected at the top there is a tick box for a stabiliser. Tick that and that will help you keep a smoother line 👍🏽
