4 Views Of Communion: With Matthew Esquivel
Going to be a great episode with our Brother Matthew Esquivel! For those who cannot distinguish the images on the graphic, We will be covering the Catholic, Lutheran, Calvinistic, and Zwinglian views of Communion. These were the four most popular views of communion during the protestant reformation and these historic conversations still play a huge role in the traditions we are a part of today.

Mentioned at the end is that there is more to cover. This includes how much emphasis Luther put on the Testament. To Luther, the real power is the WORD; specifically the words of institution of the sacraments is where the real power is and it is less about the actual bread and wine, though they are, of course, important as well. Loved the show as I love open, heartfelt discussion of being a Christian. May GOD bless you all in the name of ✝Jesus Christ/Yeshua Ha Mashiach✝- AMEN

This was eye opening. I didn’t know what I believed to be honest. I’m guessing heavy leaning on Luther but more Calvin view. My sister who is living in active rebellion, I watched her take communion and totally checked to see if she died while doing it. I half expected it to happen but prayed it wouldn’t. One my kids are there and that traumatizing. Two, I love my sister and want her to turn and repent. Three, I don’t know if she repented eighth before between her and God. Thank you for giving me some vocabulary to my views.

Currently I go to a reformed baptist church but the more I study history and other paradoxical views of the sacraments the more and more I find myself siding with the Lutherans or even Eastern Orthodox on their beliefs. I just can't get past the biblical passages that talk about the Lord's supper and baptism and hold to a merely symbolic view. Not to mention the types and shadows that represent the new testament sacraments. Jesus was our Passover Lamb and remember, they actually ate the lamb....

At about 25-29 minutes, Joshua Lewis demonstrates one of the reasons I love this show so much. He actually clarifies the Catholic position in a way that makes sense, using the passage from Galatians 3:1-2. Also, I would add the Book of Revelation when John sees the lamb sacrificed on the altar. Catholics view this passage as John describing the mass.

I would like to hear more about the translation issue in the story about the man falling out of the window in Acts. Also, @The Remnant Radio would like to hear your thoughts on the idea that when we partake in communion, that this act also could reflect by consuming the bread and wine we are now a part of Christ. He is in us. In other words, could drinking this cup and eating this bread show a direct connection to "now you are Christ's body and individually parts of it" 1 Cr 12:27 and that is why not recognizing body as in 1 Cor 11:28 is leaving some weak and sick, some asleep...is so serious?

Jesus spoke these words in advance of his crucifixion. So then, was he bodily present in the bread at that time or was it a foreshadow of the soon to be sacrificial death? Also, it was indeed a meal that they partook of not a mini emblem.
@ABC-zt6zd
@ABC-zt6zd 3 жыл бұрын
Also the context was a passover meal. They ceremonially slaughtered the lamb and then ate it. Jesus was getting the point across that He is the Lamb of God. Therefore...when you henceforth celebrate the passover, remember it's Me. I'm the One who cleanses and takes away sin--not an animal. As often as you do it (celebrate the passover) do it in remembrance of me. There is our instruction.

The Lutheran view (as a Lutheran) is commonly misunderstood to be high in regards to the mode of presence (so similar to Rome) but low in regards to sacrifice (so similar to Reformed)... It's more accurate to say that the Lutheran understands "sacrifice" (like the Anglican or Methodist) in terms of a thanksgiving offering... the 24th Article of the Augsburg Confession deals with the ways in which "the mass" may and may not be called a sacrifice. In the Eucharistic liturgy, we hear the Gospel and proclaim our faith in this saving work of God in Christ (which culminated in the once-for-all act of Calvary which we receive the benefits of in the bread and wine), we consecrate (sacrifice, set apart for holy use) the bread and wine using Our Lord's Holy Word to make them also the body and blood for us to eat and drink, we pray that the Holy Spirit may strengthen us with His grace and bless us with this gift, we offer ourselves (in prayer, song, praise) as a living sacrifice of thanksgiving as we obediently partake of this sacrament. And so on... It's just that we deny any propitiatory dimension to the act of celebrating mass itself (that we don't contribute to, that's Christ's work and his alone, as our sole mediator -- and continues to do on the altar of Heaven). In the Mass, we receive the benefits of the once-for-all propitiation and respond with Eucharistic sacrifices (from beginning to end) -- it is for this dual reason that our houses of prayer have altars (the place of sacrifice; the prayer of a believer is a priestly duty). The shape of the mass reflects the pattern of the Christian life (grace responded to with faith that cannot help but express love).

What just struck me is how so many evangelicals I’ve met are very emotionally moved by communion providing unity among them, since they’re all coming together to partake. But this always seemed empty and kinda weird to me, since if the body of Christ is actually the church itself, then the partaking of communion is supposed to be a symbol OF unity, not a means to achieve it by eating a bit of bread and wine. 🧐

Yes and we are 100% responsible for what we believe. If we choose to believe a lie over the truth we can't on judgment day say 'God i was deceived'. The woman was convinced. She saw that the tree was beautiful and its fruit looked delicious, and SHE WANTED the wisdom it would give her. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. Then she gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it, too. At that moment their eyes were opened, and they suddenly felt shame at their nakedness. So they sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves. Genesis 3:6‭-‬7 NLT She wanted what the lie offered. God allows deception, and holds us responsible for being deceived. Remember what Paul wrote in 2nd thes. He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth. 2 Thessalonians 2:10‭-‬12 NLT The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all Wisdom.

This is awesome guys!!. Just had a discussion with my preacher this past monday concerning the frequency of communion. The church i am a member of holds to the zwinglian position and infrequently has communion even before covid.. His method was to have commmunion when a member of the church came to him and brought up that communion hadn't been taken in some time and that they thought it should be taken .. I specifically asked why as a church, whose heavy on one ordinance (baptism) doesnt take communion just as seriously.. It seems unbalanced that we who are so ardent about having a new convert baptized lack that passion and zeal concerning the bread (body) & wine[grapejuice] (blood). Through further discussion his position was that he didn't want the church to become ritualistic(going through the motion) in its practice of communion, and wanted to distance our church from churches who do take it regularly (My guess assuming that those who do partake of communion on a weekly, by weekly, or monthly regularity were those who didn't take communion as serious because of the frequency). I also brought up Acts 20:7, mentioning that this seems to be the evidence concerning communion when the church gathers, and his understanding was that it was just the brethren coming together to eat. All that to say, thank you Remnant Radio. Personally i would love to have more concerning this topic!!

The main issue that a Lutheran would have with Calvin's view is two things: The manducatio oralis: (eating of the mouth) The manducatio indignorum: (eating of the unworthy) Whatever the mode of presence, spiritual or otherwise -- the main point of difference between the Lutheran and the Reformed is that the Lutheran believes that Christ is objectively present in the bread and wine itself and thus whether or not one has faith, when the bread or wine are eaten, Christ is "consumed" (faith determines whether this presence is to spiritual blessing or condemnation, but he's present either way). For the Reformed, the locus of fellowship with Christ's body and blood is not objectively in the mouth but in the heart by faith. This means that although Calvin would deny it, his emphasis on the elect (alone) receiving Christ makes little use of the reality of "real presence" (in the supper itself) and makes Calvin's view as virtually a "real absence" or symbolic view as Zwingli. The Reformed have to admit this if pushed.

Also, S. Armstrong I think you’re saying that you want a writing by Origen of Alexandria teaching transubstantiation: “Formerly, in an obscure way, there was manna for food; now, however, in full view, there is the true food, the flesh of the Word of God, as he himself says: ‘My flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink’ [John 6:55]” (Homilies on Numbers 7:2 [A.D. 248]).

Great episode. Would be nice to hear about Anglican perspectives and also Wesley, who was really close to Calvin but doesn't have (to my knowledge), Calvin's emphasis of believers ascending to partake of Christ in heaven. And Wesley seems to have a literal spiritual presence view "in" the elements themselves as is common amongst many Anglicans.

It’s complicated. I mostly hold to Zwingli’s view, but I’m conflicted. Jesus was extremely poetic. “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God” Jesus has been called the Word, He called Himself “the Truth”. The Bible tells us not to survive by bread alone, but to eat of God’s teachings. He very very well could have been poetically telling His followers to eat of the Word and drink of the Word. Walk in faith, follow His commandments and remember that we’re only able to do so because of this new covenant. That being said, there may be nothing wrong with taking communion, but to adopt and require pagan rituals is an abomination in God’s sight (He warned Israel about worshiping Him using pagan methods, not even idolatry. Still worshiping Him, but in the wrong way. He doesn’t want us to be anything like the world). So... if it’s poetry and the 1st century church knew good and well they were re-enacting the Lord’s Supper to teach of the new covenant, that’s great! They didn’t even have the canonized Bible or a printing press to distribute it. Believing it’s something we absolutely must do or thinking it’s cannibalism is pagan and an abomination for SURE. The reformers were influenced by the Roman Catholic Church in the same way were influenced by Babylonian pagan rituals like Christmas! We know good and well Jesus wasn’t born in December 25 and we tried to Christian-ize Yule and yet we still participate! Cooooomplicated.

@@alexanderhanksx It sounds like you said, "While Zwingli might possibly be right, I don't really know; but I do know that the others got it wrong because they copied paganism".
