I have listened to his Great Courses lectures on Historical Christian Theology multiple times and never gets old. When I heard he was publishing an exposition on the Nicene Creed, I could not think of anyone that can do it but Dr. Carey.

Excellent discussion. My only caution--and it's a big one--is that we do not obsess over and inordinately elevate extra-Biblical writings, especially those that arise from Church tradition. For example, the NC is a tremendous compendium, but that's all it is. Let it not be a name-dropping object of idolatry.

The nature of Jesus has been debated throughout his history. I loved that the Apostle's Creed made it clear that God is his father and holy spirit a type of mother. Jesus in flesh is fully man and fully God.. People don't like to talk about that. Creation began with the spirit "brooding" over the face of the waters. Brooding is that motion of the mother bird fluttering warmth over her nest. "Let there be light." Just as the lightning bursts forth from the ice crystals of snow clouds, light came forth in a cold and sunless earth. Later we see fish and birds coming forth as if from these waters. The heavens have strata in scripture that correspond with the courts as Moses represented them. Heaven, heavens, heaven of heavens and most high heaven. These correspond with the Holy places of the tabernacle: outer court, the outer and middle together, holy of holies and the most holy place (between the wings of cherubim.) We encounter God in a specific order on our journey. Jesus the son, Jesus with the father, the Holy Spirit and the union of father, son and holy ghost as one triune God. Being filled and born again, we can become sons of God. This correlates with the idea of an elohim council or an understanding of "ye are gods." Not that we become The God, but these are believers who walk by faith in a state of forgiveness. For example, this would be a priest not afraid to enter the Holy of Holies because he understands by faith that he is forgiven for thoughts that haven't yet entered his mind. Without this council of those filled and born of the spirit we are without an adequate council of elders in the church. Who will judge your cause. In other words, when Christ is fully formed in you, it's time for a birth. The spirit born of you walks with you, of course. When we see Peter's escape from prison, that is one example of a work of the spirit. The miracles are generally examples of works of the spirit. Ye must be born again. After this, you can see and understand. By faith Elisha could see Elijah pass on.

The Nicene Creed was primarily in response to the Arian crisis, modern day Unitarians who didn’t think Jesus was God. The Nicene Creed pre-dates the final canon of the New Testament, and likely influenced whether several books made the final cut. The first section of the Catechism of the Catholic Church breaks down the creed word by word and explains it’s deep theological meaning.

In him dwells all the power of the godhead bodily. Wonderful, Couselor, mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace... All authority in heaven and in earth was given unto him. We each have a calling to seek his face. In times past, a son would co-reign with his father for a year before becoming fully king. Today, Jesus is said to sit at the right hand of God the father. I understand him to have all the powers of the father, being co-equal. ("The Lord said to my lord, sit thou on my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." I take that to be a reference to the power of God's love which "draws" men with cords of love. Then, we who are drawn become children at his feet. To be elect is by definition "to be drawn.") Moses once stood in the cleft of a rock on a moutain. Hundreds of years later Elijah would stand there. Both would be translated to the same specific time to see Jesus. David writes his psalm as someone who saw the coronation of Jesus after his ascension. I can't explain. I can and do believe...Jesus was their lord and he is my lord. I THINK he grew in faith even though he was the son of God and conceived by the Holy Spirit. He learned the scriptures and received the same portions of faith as Abraham. He lived as a man and he did it without sin. He, first, became a son of God as the apostle John might have, resting in the bosom of the father. But of Jesus we hear this: "This day I have begotten thee." Only Jesus could have overcome death to be the first resurrected from that place. Because...only Jesus was without sin. Ever since Eden, men have misunderstood the love and mercey of God. They raged when they should have loved. They imagined vanity instead of salvation, They thought the cords of love were bonds to be cut asunder. I won't claim to understand all things, but i know Jesus is the Proton of the Proton Psalm (Psalm 2.). He draws the electon on a staight path called "the way of life" through 3 courts and a 4th location where his face is covered by wings of the cherubim. This must be a gate, because there is no beyond that point. And here there is יענה, the beginning of the response of God. A man may walk and talk with God as Adam did. Only the answer may takes a few hours to arrive.

The Western church is definitely wrong the Holy Spirit only proceeds from The Father. It is impossible on any journey to proceed from 2 different locations. John 14:26 NASB1995 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you." Repeatedly it has been said that Jesus sent the Holy Spirit as if this gives support to the Western church speaking the truth about the Spirit proceeding from the Son. But this is not so as the full quotation of Jesus's words makes perfectly clear. The Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and Jesus said He would send the Spirit from the Father. John 15:26 In-Context ' “When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me." NIV

Wrong. "The Lord" or even "the LORD," unless one happens to know from the context to whom the term refers, does not distinguish God the Son from God the Father from some other lord or master. One of the most deceitful tricks of Satan has been to obscure and even eliminate the name of the God of the Bible represented by the Tetragrammaton, wrongly translated "Adonai" or "the LORD" in virtually all English translations. To capitulate to the Jews who began to obscure and avoid pronouncing the name of the Father to avoid persecution by the Antisemitic Greeks and Romans is, ironically, to go along with replacement theology.

Who needs the nicene creed. Or any creeds, confessions councils or fathers? Jesus is not the one Deity, only the Father is. The nicene creed was an invention and fabrication of mortal fallible biased men. Jesus is the Son of the living God. He is not the living God. Jesus is the image of God, not God. Jesus is the form of God, not God. Jesus has a God , he is not God Absolute. Jesus is the outward visible representation of the invisible God, the Father. God is the Head of Christ. God is greater than Christ. God gives life to the Son..The Son lives by the power of God. God anointed begets and is in and with the Son. It is the Father operating in the Son who is doing the works. Only the Father is the only true God and the Lord God Almighty. The Parr about the Son does not come out of SS. Get your facts straight

I'll help you out. I finished this video. I was raised a 5-Point Calvinist. And I'm like Arminian and believe people can fail salvation from this scripture I found Galatians 5:19-21 that when sinning that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. Galatians was Paul's teachings, believed by Calvinists to be Dispensation of Grace, proves people can fail eternal salvation. Grandpa believed he couldn't go to Hell, and Arminians believe he could. I'm against suicide. I was depressed also to suicidal. I almost did suicide as a 5-Point Calvinist. And these scriptures got me more hope. I became more Arminian now from these scriptures I posted on here. I believe people can fail salvation. Loving God is wanting to be useful for him much. What if a person could do that much of his time? And I enjoy working from this. People who enjoy working. When it's more likely to be boring to non-Christians. Mark 9:33-35 New American Standard Bible 1995 33 They came to Capernaum; and when He [a]was in the house, He began to question them, “What were you discussing on the way?” 34 But they kept silent, for on the way they had discussed with one another which of them was the greatest. 35 Sitting down, He called the twelve and *said to them, “If anyone wants to be first, [b]he shall be last of all and servant of all.” This is for Christian world domination. Why to raise kids Christians. God Son Jesus said similarly to whoever is useful the most is the best merited of the apostles. Useful merit for eternal rewards and competition with other Christians. With God Son Lord Jesus Christ faith teaching, people will want to be useful for the kingdom of Heaven, which usefulness happens on Earth and if any other place. We need to help this world as much as we can! This text could motivate, supposed to be Christian people, to do all types of usefulness. Chores, volunteering, grade school, high school, college, and work. Good people, this world needs them.

Dealing with the filioque, I’ve heard from orthodox Christian’s that the issue is that every attribute/role in the trinity is either shared among the 3 persons or possessed by only 1. So if the Spirit proceeds from the Father and Son it would make the Spirit subservient to the 2

Since he is fully divine, I doubt most Christians would be willing to admit that the Holy Spirit is subservient to any of the divine persons, even the Father. “Proceeds from” does not necessarily mean subservient to, anymore than “begotten of” does.

I go back to the first commandment to understand God. "Hear O Israel, the Lord thy God is one Lord." He has three presentations as Son, Father and Holy Spirit. The spirit of the son will quicken or enlighten the heart. The spirit of the Father quickens the soul and the Holy Spirit quickens the mind. In that way we are able to love God with all our heart, soul and mind. Sometimes we have different understanding of heart, soul and spirit. The heart is the seat of desire. At salvation we receive forgiveness and God puts into our hearts a new love for family and a desire to know God. After that,, I see soul as the will that is either committed to the father's will or not. Although we don't live in a country that enforces God's law, he makes his will clear in these laws. Accepting God's will as your own requires a work of God. Only in Jesus, "I am the righteousness 8f God in Chrisy Jesus." The next third is the mind. Renewal of the mind allows/enables "on his word do I meditate day and night." Then these 3 thirds can get quickened together that we may love God with all our might. Few there be that get this far. The life God breathed into mankind is in the blood. This spirit of God Almighty, the most high God allows the recipient to hear a still small voice and a deeper understanding of the word. There is a possibility that these "sons of God" will manifest miracles by the spirit. This part is called "the good part."
