Heidi Fedor Lindt or other good chocolate brands make good bunnies. (Some of them are solid, too; a nice change from hollow if the chocolate is good.) The problem is that there are a plethora of off brands which seem to manufacture “chocolate flavored wax” year round and pile it onto grocery store shelves at attractive prices just in time for innocent children’s non-chocolate-loving moms to snatch it up, congratulating themselves on finding such a bargain. 😱🤯🤮 No, Mom, I’m not bitter at all 😂

Heidi Fedor Wow-did your mom have a lamb-shaped pan or something? Interesting. My sister was born on Easter Sunday, so for years my mom made her a “bunny cake” for Easter. 1. Bake two standard round cake layers 2. Make two arcing cuts in one of the cake layers, so as to create a sort of bow tie shape sandwiched between two ear shapes 3. Frost each piece; arrange ears - head - bow tie on a cookie sheet 4. Use colored icing to indicate the linings of the ears, to create eyes/nose/mouth, and to make the bow tie contrast with the bunny’s head 5. Sprinkle with sweetened shredded coconut for “fur”; leave the bow tie plain, for those who don’t like coconut
@heidifedor4 жыл бұрын
Goosebump 801 Yes, but she didn’t take the time to pipe the icing so that it would look like lambs wool. So after she applied the icing, it just like a white birch log with a jellybean nose, and two jellybean eyes. Eventually she covered it in coconut, which looked better. However, by then she had lost the recipe that came with cake pan. So she had to use a box cake mix, which wasn’t dense enough to hold the cake together. The head would always fall off, and she would have to stick it back on with a wooden skewer. In other words, I don’t think it was the amazing cake that you were envisioning.

In the American South, or at least the part of Alabama I grew up in, the Easter meal is pretty much always ham. In fact, ham is probably eaten by more families on Easter than Christmas because a few Southern families do turkey or beef, but Easter is always ham. As for sides, it’s usually a take your pick of traditional Southern dishes. Often there’s something cheesy like mac and cheese (homemade of course) or scalloped potatoes or hash brown casserole. And something green like green beans or greens. Maybe glazed carrots. Usually yeast rolls or biscuits. Usually there’s a big platter of deviled eggs somewhere. And then dessert is often something with meringue like banana pudding or a cream pie of some sort like lemon or chocolate. Sometimes there are lemon bars. Back when I was a kid, congealed salads were also a thing at Easter but I know almost no one that makes congealed salad anymore.

They’re not just “regular buns”! They have raisins and peel in them and a hint of cinnamon. The cross can be carved into the dough, or added with white icing after baking. A Canadian staple of the season. Some bakeries even bring them out at Christmas. But that’s just wrong.
@lu_shulmu4 жыл бұрын
@hawkturkey You've never been anywhere near a British hot cross bun, have you? First of all, the cross is made by applying a thick paste of water and flour, never icing. The bun itself is a spiced fruit bun with sultanas, mixed peel and zest, cinnamon and allspice. Split in half, toasted (under the grill that most British households have as part of their stove) and buttered they are absolutely divine. These days hot cross buns are available as soon as lent starts and sometimes outside the Easter season because people love them so much.

I live across the pond in South Africa and have seen Simnel cakes being made on tv but not ever come across one. We had Easter egg hunts and we certainly buy hot cross buns, lovely with lots of butter.

Ahh, lamb. Apparently only three cuts of lamb are available for humans: Leg, Rack and Chops. If you type in "lamb" on most grocery stores websites you''ll get those three and then 15 to 20 varieties of dog food! Sad. All I wanted for Easter was lamb shank. I don't think it exists this year.

Growing up in England my nan had these molds that made solid chocolate handed down through generations. Easter was solid chocolate eggs and bunnies. I live in Texas now and still have lamb for Easter. It's nice to see you still have the accent as I. Cheers

I just bought up a bunch of cadbury creme eggs on my weekly shopping trip! Growing up my family would have the same turkey dinner that we’d have for Thanksgiving & Christmas. Dessert wasn’t so prominent, but that’s bexause we had sooooo much candy in our baskets to eat!

@@spencerwilton5831 While I haven't tried the British version of Cadbury mini eggs, I have tried the British version of Cadbury chocolate bars. The British Cadbury tastes much better than the American version. Smoother texture and a richer chocolate flavor. I think the American version has a funny aftertaste, as do the American mini eggs.

Hey Lawrence what a wonderful surprise to hear you actually say the name of Jesus!!!! Big thumbs up for you my British brother👍👍👍👍👍 America is a strange country and by that I mean we will celebrate Easter but we won’t even acknowledge that Jesus is the reason for the season so God bless you for saying it like it is✝️✝️✝️💕🐇
@louislong69154 жыл бұрын
Really, because my Christian friends posted all week about Jesus. Those of us who don't belive in Jesus celebrate it for other reasons. That's what makes America a great place, we're all free to do things how we want.

I strongly recommend looking up the etymology of the word Easter. Plus, the reason the holiday is associated with fertility symbols like rabbits and eggs.

The UK definitely outdoes the USA in sheep herding. As of 2019, the UK had around 23.1 million of them, while the USA had around 5.2 million. On the other hand, the USA has around 94.8 million cows and the UK has less than 10 million. Apparently, lonely herdsmen in the USA prefer cows, while sheep are still the darlings of the British.

I'm also American going a number of generations back, but both sides of the family were quite the in-your-face Anglophiles - to the point where my mother would dress me in an orange shirt on St. Patrick's Day. A large number of my mother's ancestors were ejected to Canada during and after the American Revolution. I was taught more respect for the Queen than the President. We celebrated Easter with a mixture of British and American traditions. I hated hot cross buns, mostly because I never liked raisins, but was also given those vile hollow chocolate bunnies that I'm convinced were, as someone else said, made from vaguely chocolate-flavored wax. I only recall having lamb at Easter once, and since my mother's culinary skills were limited to what she called "English Farm Cooking," the lamb didn't go over very well. I remember it tasting very bitter, and when combined with veggies that had all the color and flavor boiled out of them, was especially bad. I think we usually had ham for Easter, or at least I can remember having ham sometimes, but I can't remember if it was considered a "tradition." Ham was always done with brown sugar and raisins, with enough salt added to wipe out a whole herd of slugs. I could go on and on, but I always thought my mom's kitchen was where Phyllis Diller got most of her joke material.

That's really interesting. Today I think a lot of Americans prefer the queen over the president too.

My American father, the son of an English mother and a Scottish father, loved hot cross buns. It was not Easter for him without them. I don t like them. Never have. But the tradition continues with our friend, an inner city black lady originally from the deep south. When my dad was looking for them a number of years ago, he asked her if she had seen any available any where. He had to explain them to her. When he told her about the cross on top, she immediately adopted the tradition and went off in search of them for both herself and my dad. My dad has now passed but his tradition has carried on in an unusual way.

My first job was as a baker's helper at a Swiss bakery here in Tucson, AZ. We made hot-cross buns for two weeks leading up to Easter. Every day, we took the leftover ones from the previous day and mixed them into the dough for the new ones. By Holy Thursday there was so much flavor in there they tasted much better than the ones from the first week. Also, I grew very weary of them. Haven't had one since.
