That use of tape as an eyeline flag is a great idea, and it costs pennies. Thanks! Personally, I use the Neewer matte box that costs $20 and fits on rails and rigs. It doesn't hold filters, but it does have top and side flags, and despite being cheap enough to be expendable, it is made of plastic that is just strong and flexible enough to not break with normal use.

Tilta has a $99 matte box that's somewhat comparable. It uses standard 4x5.65 filters, which are super expensive though - but are standard so you can use them on any pro matte box system if you outgrow the Tilta matte box in the future.
@andrewheki22574 жыл бұрын
You forgot the 5th way, which is matting off part of the frame, hence the name matte box. Although this method isn't used as much today, due to the ease of cropping in post, it was used by Paramount in the early 50s to do an in camera crop from 1.37:1 aspect ratio to 1.66:1. I got a matte box to use graduated NDs with my camera. Circular grad filter begin the gradation in the middle of the frame, but matte box filter trays are vertically adjustable, so I can choose where to begin the gradation in the frame. I bought an all metal Cinematics matte box, which is a good matte box for the money, but it only supports 4x4 filters, which can vignette on wide lenses.

BTW, if you don't have a matte box, learn to shoot next to tree trunks and buildings when outdoors. Shooting from shade to a sun-lit, especially backlit, subject, makes a major difference in your results. Take it from someone that shot 35 mm film before digital existed. Plus, always use a polarized filter when outdoors on sunny days. It does wonders for sky colors.

You know, I've loved a lot of these pro videos and they've been super insightful, but I feel like we could spend a LITTLE bit of time talking about some more actual indie film stuff. There have been many great things to learn from your recent videos, but Hollywood-level cinematography/production and big-league freelance videography don't exactly hit the same inspiring nerves as videos about creative indie film techniques etc. That being said, you've been making amazing quality stuff, and obviously, you should do what you love to do, this is just an opinion from a whiner so yeah.

I dunno man, a lot of clients react to your equipment and seem to buy that your gear represents how professional you are. Sounds ridiculous, but it really is true a lot of the time. A mattebox is one of the simplest ways to make a camera look "legit". It's not so much about feeling cool yourself as presenting professionally to the client, like a businessman's suit. Everyone knows a big rectangle in front of the camera must mean you aren't just shooting home video on a camcorder. It's legitimately helpful to have clients get excited and enthusiastic on set because they're buying into your shoot as a real production in progress, especially in the early days when you're actually kinda flying by the seat of your pants working with smaller businesses. If they feel good about the production, they may give better performances/be easier to work with on set AND talk about you excitedly to others, which can help get your company out there too. I would only find this whole idealistic psychological angle annoying if a mattebox served no physical purpose, but considering how useful they actually are... I mean they don't shoot real films without em for a reason, and those guys have nobody to impress. Essentially you can never call a mattebox a foolish purchase, so the fact that it helps you look good is really just a cherry on top worth mentioning. And yeah, if you're videos aren't actually good in the end, you're ultimately doomed... but that's always the case anyway ha

ANYONE CAN ANSWER- I have a question- if you are working on an adobe premire video project where you want both real time shots and slow motion shots (such as in 120 fps) should you make the project sequence settings in 120 fps or 24? i do 120 but so it can handle the slow mo but wonder if that will make the shots that are in 24 fps have that "way too smooth" and "predicted, unrealistic" look. If this doesnt make sense let me know. Thanks to anybody who reads and responds!

mKey use a 24 FPS time line. If the 120 FPS doesn’t conform automatically to slow mo then slow down the 120fps clips.

No, there are many more reasons for it. It makes it easier to stack filters, you don't have to unscrew your filters every time you change your lens, you can (when using high end matte boxes) tilt your filters to avoid reflections. Also you can use hard mattes and top, side and bottom flags to really remove those flares.
