I like your ideas, but for us down here in the US, there's an obstacle you don't have to worry about up there - down here, most of us are dependent on our employer for health care, because otherwise healthcare here is pretty much a luxury for the wealthy. I've had ideas for earning pretty good money for myself, but if I leave my regular job, I'd be without healthcare. We can only dream of a time someday when maybe we can all escape the grip of the American health industrial complex.

For those of us (especially USA) who do work for "the man" I think an underrated & powerful thing is to make yourself extremely useful and good at your job *BUT* refuse to work outside of working hours. Come in on time. Take your FULL lunch break every single day (on time whenever possible). If work ends at 5, leave at 5. When more workers do this it gradually becomes the culture. I'm in my 40s and have seen HUGE positive strides in this. 15 yrs ago I saw so many more employees in the vibe of taking work calls, email and texts all evening and working 10 hr days with no break. Especially those of us in our 20s-50s working prime right now can impact the culture by refusing to do that. Yeah some places are still gonna demand the BS of years past but if everyone refuses? Good luck, employers.

What’s funny is that if you go just a bit further back a lot of this didn’t exist. When you left work for the day you were done. Email didn’t exist yet or the company still had mainframe email. No cell phones. Pagers, but only a few had them for emergencies. If you were salary and worked a few hours over you would get reimbursed for a meal. Technology made people more productive, but companies still wanted more. Now there’s a lot of blur between work and home life. Even on vacation people are still plugged into work checking email and attending meetings remotely, especially when companies don’t cross-train and you have no backup person for your job because it’s teams of 1 person now instead of teams of 3 or 4.

Nicole is wonderful but there is some important information left out of this video: When you're self-employed You have to charge about about double or triple to make the same amount of money as you would as an employee. When you're self-employed in the US you have to pay a hefty self-employment tax, You have zero benefits, zero health insurance, zero paid days off, and you wind up working a lot of hours that are not billable. Looking for new clients, giving out estimates and a lot of other work is not billable. I've been self-employed my entire life, it's a good life but there's so much you need to be aware of and simply thinking that you can double your income by charging twice and as much as an hourly worker would get is not the reality. If you're earning $20 an hour as an hourly worker I would say you need to earn a minimum of $60 an hour as a self-employed person to actually make more money in the end. On top of that, when you're self-employed you are not guaranteed to work a certain amount of hours per week so consistency of billable hours becomes a huge issue.

You are overstating the costs of self-employment rather bigly. The employer's half of FICA that you are now responsible for is 7.65% of gross wages, and the ACA as modified by the ARPA limits health insurance premiums to 8.5% of gross income at any income level. That's literally all you have to pay to be self-employed in the US at the moment. Of course, that all changes if Trump repeals the ACA, so no promises for next year.

Youre right. Time is not a renewable resource. It is precious. The 40 hr work week is outdated. We only have 112 waking hours a week. We should only be working 20 hrs. With modern technology we can do more in 20 hrs than people used to do in 40 hrs. So, the 20 hrs should be valued at least as much as the 40 used to be - with the same pay. Then we have the rest of our time to be exercising, going to medical appointments, and doing things to enhance our health - like preparing nutritious meals, taking care of our homes, doing chores, managing financial responsibilities and investments, spending time with friends and family, doing hobbies we enjoy, having pets, learning, trying new things, creating, inventing, experimenting, traveling to open our minds new ways of doing things and of living, giving time to charitable causes, volunteering, and spiritual pursuits. Youre right on. But those in power, those corporate owners don't want us to have that free time because we might outpace them, compete with them, hinder the status quo that gets them rich. People woke up a while ago. Now the internet is giving them the power to take action and do things differently.

The corporate and political powers also don't want the current system to change, because they only benefit when people are running fast and furious on the hamster wheel, too busy and distracted chasing the American Consumerist Dream to notice all the sh*t those in power are pulling. Our rights are being chipped away, and people are oblivious because they don't have - or fail to take - the time to educate themselves about what is going on. We are too busy working (aka, making other people wealthy), buying useless crap, and posting stupid selfies on social media.

Totally agreed. Something that many people aren't aware of, is that medieval serfs only worked an average of 20 to 25 hours a week (except for the busy harvest season that lasted about two weeks). And before agriculture, prehistoric people worked an average of 10 to 15 hours per week. Humans were never meant to work 40 hours per week, let alone 50-60-70 and beyond.

In tech, the "morning huddle" is called SCRUM, and it is the worst fucking invention of the tech industry. Your boss gets everyone together (and is supposed to stand to make it fast), and everyone has to say what they are doing while other people and your boss snipe at you. Sometimes they are "fast" - 15 minutes, and sometimes they are not. When I finally quit my job the daily meetings were taking about an hour a day. No gained benefit other than boss feeling bossy.
@amg9163
@amg9163 4 ай бұрын
@RaechelMaelstrom I worked in IT at a large, recognizable fashion company. I had multiple _huddles_ with multiple teams, taking up most of all of the day. After 8 hours of meetings, and trying to process the details of all the meetings, it was exhausting to try to do *_actual work_* during the several *_unpaid after hours._* Happy to say, as of this past Friday, I am no longer there. And I will *not* miss 35 to 50 _"meetings"_ *about virtually nothing.*
@mettamorph4523

Me too in tech. Instantly recognized the "huddles". Corporations trying to seem silicon Valley modern. Total time waste, always during my most productive morning hours. Projects still mismanaged with last minute crunch coding. The most useful project tools IMO is Gantt chart and a dedicated war room with white boards. NOT white boards that get erased for other meetings.

Anyone who's worked a retail job as a minimum wage employee will relate to this videos sentiment in some manner. Every year I've worked at a retail job, we've had a micromanaging supervisor, which completely contradicts the wasteful nature of these team building exercises. No one wanted to be there and no tangible increase in progression was made due to these meetings, yet they were regularly scheduled on days most of us had off. I was 18 and a student at the time, so coming in for a 9pm "get to know your coworkers" meeting was excruciating.

As an old guy now who was self employed for 30 odd years your comment about dreading Monday on Friday really resonated with me when I was working for other people. Being self employed isn't for everyone but for some of us it's a life line. It's a bit like entering a world you've never been in before. There are different skill sets needed to navigate going from being a technician, in whatever it is that you do, to now being a manager and an entrepreneur. My biggest reason to go out on my own was for my FREEDOM, which you kind of alluded to in the video. If anyone is thinking about this route I'd recommend they get in touch with someone doing it in your area and take them for lunch to ask them just how they did it and what to watch out for. Good luck to all the new self employed young people.

Honestly, anywhere I have ever worked, this is what I see. People spends tons of time at work socializing with coworkers, checking personal email, doing Facebook and other personal sh*t on their phones, etc. Very few people have the discipline, stamina, drive, whatever, to work a solid 8 hours in a row. And perhaps that is not healthy, anyway. The eight hour work day is outmoded. As someone said above, modern technology lets us get more done, faster. The 32 hour work week could be the norm, and I don't think GDP would drop one bit.

I am so THRILLED for young people like you (and many of us older folks) who now have these options/opportunities. When I was coming up (Baby Boomer here), we were told you do high school, college or trade school and work for some company for a pension for 40 or 50 years then retire. A few years later you likely get hit with some debilitation illness or die. If you didn't do this, you were a worthless, lazy slug who didn't contribute to society. Anything outside the 'norm' was considered weird. I never fit into that mold even in grade school. It led to 30 years doing something I hated and eventually nearly killed me from the stress. These last 14 yrs. I'm in the medical field doing something closer to my heart. I'm getting ready to retire in the next year or two and looking to relocate and work part time. Having these new options for work opens doors that didn't exist before.

I think one thing worth mentioning for folks in the U.S. is that immigrating to Canada might be good if you want to be self employed. One HUGE reason I keep my current job (which is a good job to be clear) is that health insurance would cost much more if I wasn't getting good insurance through my employer.

As someone a scooch older than you I say bravo. I worked hard young. Actually got two degrees but they were free. I was smart about it. Worked casually whilst studying. Bought two houses. Not sucked in by marketing consumerism. Frugalista here. I never worked for myself but only worked jobs I loved. Retired young and had kids old. Hubby still works in a career he loves. I love that you said you never had to ask for a day off. That's worth gold. And sleep is underated. You go girl. Its amazing the wealth you can amass by not getting sucked in by consumerusm. A lightbulb moment for me when doing a saftey training course. Instructor said if there is a fire 80% of people are sheep and will automatically follow everyone else even if its into the fire. Only 20% of the population think before acting. That gave me the confidence that not following social norms was GOOD!

10:30 - I talked to a co-worker about this very thing today after he asked me why I was lurking around the mechanic's shop. As it turns out, he doesn't like taking the required 30-minute break either, but since I am a baby's breath away from getting into trouble, I'll have to play along for a while and twiddle my thumbs. Usually, my boss wouldn't give a flip-flying fuchsia about me working straight through, so I'm guessing the "reminder to all employees" came from corporate.

That is just breaking even (or a very small percentage more) for a lot of risk I was employed for 25/hr in 1995 when I went self-employed I was SHOCKED how much more I had to charge to come out ahead $100/hr That is roughly 205/ hr today and very hard to sell I generally only make 150-175/hr I feel bad for younger kids starting out today

There are almost none. I don’t pay for healthcare or insurance out of pocket. My taxes are basically exactly the same as they would be if I had a normal job. I pay $60/m for business insurance and maybe $1000 a year for relevant supplies. On the contrary, I can write off parts of my car and home expenses which lowers my tax burden and saves me money.

Interesting timing for this video, because I've been considering going back to self-employment recently. My current full-time job is easy and can be fun (depending on who I'm working with that day): but it's very physically demanding and I'm in my 50s now and starting to realize that my body is probably not going to be able to take much more of this workload for much longer. I'm already starting to notice the negative physical effects, especially from old Army injuries that haven't bothered me in decades suddenly starting to become a problem again. So, it may not be a case of wanting to quit my job. I just might not have a choice in the matter.

Medicine costs money here too. The only thing that is free in Canada is if you go to the hospital or a Family Doctor. If you go to Private Clinics they costs money. Usually are better.
