If you're looking for an opportunity to practice your ability to express your ideas and thoughts into writing, then you need not look further than the comments section. Seriously, I feel like I've improved my own writing by being active in the KZbin comments section. Of course the comments section is not a formal or academic medium for sharing thoughts and ideas, but a lot of times, I treat it otherwise. Most of the time, when I am writing a comment, I pretend like I've been tasked with sharing a reflection on the video, and I write in such a way as if I were writing for an assignment or a task. Happy writing everyone!

I definitely like your approach and perspective! Although, I would somewhat disagree that the common section isn't formal or academic. Even though this is a public platform where, for the most part, people engage in casual communication, the free exchange of thoughts and ideas is in itself academic since we are furthering knowledge with one another. Heck, I'm writing this comment because I read yours and felt motivated to practice my writing skills (that definitely have room for improvement). It's a wonderful complement to the video! I'll be trying to write more comments having this one in mind 😎

I think if you really want to speak and write better, you need to study sentences and build vocabulary. And listen to the speeches of great leaders and analyze them and apply them in your writing or conversation. Learning by imitation could be the best to improve your writing n speaking.

As a year 12 student nearning my English exam, this video pushed me to start practicing without the pressure of being 'perfect', humans aren't perfect and our learning process certainly is the most imperfect process of them all, worrying about if this or that sentence meets all the critera has stumped me from progressing, releasing myself from this worry meant practicing and getting better came to me without effort, the entire pocess has been streamlined, leading to the greatest line of learning english in my life, in watching this video, i feel confident to begin my english exam without the pressures of perfection, thank you.

Really like the way you approach this broad topic. I've been stuggling with IELTS writing tasks for one month and just realized something one day before test that writing is about getting accustomed to the process of having a perfect piece. It contains many steps , especially for beginners and second-language writers, sitting on the uncomfortable feelings require patience and determination .

I always struggle with writing my thoughts into words. Whenever I have an amazing idea that I'd like to write, I struggle when it comes to writing it down. I'm always constantly checking the grammar, the composition, and the structure without actually focusing on the idea itself. This video is such a helpful guide. I should focus more on the idea itself rather than what I'm writing, and I think understanding my thoughts would help me write better.

I have followed a lot of your videos and recently wrote a story on a story telling platform. For weeks, I received no comment or rating. A couple of stories that I had written before got a reasonable response and rating. But the last one for which I took a lot of efforts into understanding better writing, got me zero response for weeks which is devastating. But nevertheless, I blame myself for that. All your tips are really really insightful. Thanks for that.

Hey, sorry to hear it, but there's no need to blame yourself. Sometimes audiences just don't respond the way you think they will. The fact that you're putting your writing out there is pretty impressive by itself--so keep on writing! It's all practice, and it all counts in the long run

I am still looking for that one magic book that will help me improve my grammar and writing. Any recommendations?
@WritingwithAndrew Жыл бұрын
I don't know about a magic book...just based on your comment, I'd guess that your grammar is probably okay. You might find some helpful ideas in Joseph Williams' Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace, which has some good advice for making sure that sentence structure supports the ideas you're trying to get across. For more fundamental grammar, you could also check out the grammar playlist on this channel if you haven't already :)

thank you for the great content. I just discovered your channel. New subcriber. Free writing sounds like a great idea. For me it seems my biggest block is somewhere between trying to put words on a page and figuring out what those words and ideas are based off of a feeling. what I clearly can't say very well is just that. How do you find words to describe and idea or topic that is just a feeling? What topic is the feeling I am having? (it's usually frustration or anxiety btw) Sorry if I am not more clear on this.
@WritingwithAndrew Жыл бұрын
Thanks! And that's a great question. The least glamorous answer is answer is that it takes practice, but there are some things you could also try. Sometimes writers don't try to explain the feeling but instead to describe the more tangible experience of feeling it (the difference between, for example, "I was sad," and "Tears welled up in my eyes"). You could also try using an analogy or metaphor to get some clarity on the feeling, like the old poem that compares love to a rose: love is hard to understand, but roses are easier to grasp--and drawing connections between the two can make it easier to find the words for love. Hope that helps!

HI Andrew, Your suggestion on writing everything down won't help me because I am preparing for a writing exam, which will be timed. Do you have any tips?
@WritingwithAndrew5 ай бұрын
For timed writing exams, I've learned that taking the extra time to write out an outline is time very well spent. It feels like an extra step, but it ends up saving you time in the long run because you won't have to stop and figure things out as you go. You could think of it as a more streamlined form of writing everything down--just making a plan for everything before you get started.
@zaphenath734 ай бұрын
@@WritingwithAndrew I understand your point on writing an outline, but for someone who doesn't write fast, what should they do when time is not on their side? Writing out an outline could take up more time for them to write the essay. What's your thoughts and a strategy to get two essays completed with minimum errors, please. I am in the process of improving my writing skills and looking for good strategies for timed essay writing.
@WritingwithAndrew4 ай бұрын
Do the outline 🙂 For a long time I thought it was just taking time away from writing the essay, but I eventually learned that taking a few minutes to put together a good plan ended up saving me a lot of time overall because I didn't have to stop after each sentence and paragraph to think about what to write next. Give yourself a quick plan that works, and you can be confident the essay will work too. You can also, of course, always practice--give yourself a topic to write about, set a timer, and see what works for you
