I'm a creative writer and have tried to find the answer to the mysteries of 'flow'. I can't be more grateful to have found this video. The explanations and suggestions make so much sense. No wishy washy ways but concrete actionable tips. I'm hoping on the next videos on flow now. This will help me so much. Thank you!

I wonder why this wonderful channel and this wonderful video has so less subscribers, likes and views. Nevertheless, I take it on my part to promote the channel and the video. Furthermore, I would like to congratulate and confer my best wishes to Mr. Andrew for this woonful lesson. I am currently in my tenth grade and just tommorow is my boards exam. "Flow" is a new assessment criterion this year and i was really puzzled with it. However, I feel that watching this video and a few more similar ones has improved my writing in seconds. Please consider this comment also as a piece of writing and feel free to judge it. Thank you a lot..

(Upon revisiting this video again) I'm going to get "cohesion, coherence, and organization" tattooed on my body. Also, (if you have the time and see this comment) are there any books you'd recommend that go over semantic cohesion/cohorence/organization? Lastly, do you have a patreon/kofi? Thanks! @@WritingwithAndrew

As far as books go, Joseph Williams' book Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace does a pretty job of covering these topics. It's one of the classic textbooks, so it shouldn't be too hard to pick up an inexpensive copy somewhere. On the topic of Patreon, etc., I don't...at least not yet (KZbin has been sending me emails lately to start, though, so maybe sooner than later)

Thank you Andrew. As a struggling student with lots to write, your video was super clarifying. After having watched your video, I realized that I probably flipped like all the information from primary ed writing classes I’ve had. Like I thought I was told that “sentences shouldn’t be longer than 23 words” or “never start with but, and, for…”. But I’ve read SO many scholarly and media publications where most of the “rules” were not strict. I have added this video to my a limited “writing” beliefs document where I keep all my childhood writing rules next to the myriad of exceptions.
@WritingwithAndrew
@WritingwithAndrew 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks--I'm really happy to hear it was helpful! I'm convinced a lot of the "rules" we learn in school are just designed to make grading easier, which is too bad because those rules can prevent us from having fun and feeling successful when we write. Good luck with all the writing--you've got this!

I saw the comment on the background music and wanted to say that, for this video, it was appropriate. It reminded me of the Disney movie Soul, which uses the mental state of flow as a plot point. Whereas music may not work in a video about outlines, here it adds notes of creativity and provides harmony for the message. Cohesion, coherence, and organization are all excellent skills, but I am kind of tired of theory. Don't, though, get me wrong: I would just appreciate it if you try actually showing how all of these can be incorporated into writing in a distinct episode. But overall, a remarkable and elaborate video. Thank you so much for sharing this. Greetings from Ukraine. Keep up the great work, Andrew.

That would probably be a good topic for a video (I'll put it on the list!) One thing you might try that I do fairly often is just see if there's a way to express the same idea in half as many words: sometimes, it might not be possible, but it'll at least help you to practice writing more concisely

This video has really helped my writing, so thank you for making it. The video is great, but there is a small improvement I can suggest. The combination of the alerting tone+pop up graphic from the skull distracts from what you are saying, so I found myself rewinding frequently when they occurred. Talking about jarring (and I'm not talking about bird calls), I got whiplash by this: "Heather peered through the branches, shielding her eyes from the sun. After her walk ..." Wait. What happened? Did she find tanagers? What did she like about them? What distinguishes them? Why did we even come to the tree? Why was it important to give us this text? I contend that we learned absolutely nothing in that text. It was 80% exposition and the brief moment of showing didn't give us any useful information.

When I was in school, nonfiction writers occasionally joined our poetry workshops, and they had a habit of getting frustrated with our attitude toward language and fact. We once spent over a half hour discussing a poem about a speck of dust floating in the air as if it were too small to be affected by gravity. The poets took the line in stride, but one of the essayists insisted that gravity operates at every scale so the dust couldn't possibly have been unaffected by gravity. It seems they had forgotten we were reading about one poet's perception of a passing moment and not a dissertation on the physical laws of the cosmos.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a hippie, so New Age isn't my concern, it's the noises themselves that, for me, only serve as a distraction to your message.
