@@shadowartiste thank you so much. I hope you know how much people appreciate you. I’m 46 now. I was an award winning child artist. I didn’t think that art would pay the bills, so I went to medical school. I was an urgent care doctor for 12 years. I walked away from urgent care because I’m tormented by own dreams and ideas to write stories, novels and poetry. When I started drawing again on my tablet 2 weeks ago, sitting down to write, I was scared af. But, your videos helped me map out the next steps in this journey. Thank you so much!!

Hey! Thank you for reaching out and telling us your story. I'm actually taken back a bit by the fact I could inspire a doctor to take steps towards a more fulfilling path. Crazy! I am a self taught artist in the Santa Fe area and I can assure you I don't fit into the art aesthetic. I am super okay with it, but it can be lonely. Not having a mental illness or major trauma also isolates me from the community. Everyone wants to talk about all their issues and how it is reflected in the art. My life is fine and I am blessed to be able to have the time and means to create.

New subscriber here. At my late 60s I'm starting to create. An art school story - I realize how lucky one of my brothers was back in the late 70s. He gave up a full sports scholarship at a university to study art (the school did not have a art program at the time, and it was long before internet days). He transferred to one of the top art schools in New York City. In his first year, he had a professor tell him - "You have this; there is nothing we need to teach you, this is your time, go..." And he did, and went on to have a very successful career. When I say lucky, I don't mean he didn't have to work hard at his art business, but that he had this wise gracious art professor in the very beginning. Thank you for your lessons, Shadow Artiste

As someone currently in Art School, as a Drawing and Illustration major... 3rd year, I can agree with this man 100%. If nothing else, you're learning how to create in uncomfortable circumstances. You might surprise yourself and create something you didn't think you could. You're learning to follow through to completion regardless of how you feel. In the real world, we often have to do things "because they said so". Perception is everything, so try to make it exciting. Get psyched up! When people commission you to do work, this skill will come in handy! Trust that you don't understand WHY this is valuable YET. You got this!

@@mattkevlarlarock5469 Yes. The right education can be very helpful. And you learn some good basic skills. I have noticed that you are taken more seriously in the art world if you have a degree or have apprenticed under somebody. I have a number of artist friends so I network. I did take some college classes in the late 1970's which helped. I work in higher ed. And I like that, a lot of people like to take sides and it's nice to hear something refreshing from someone who just wants to make art. I think that your attitude of just making art is something that is forgotten in our industry, people who get into the art industry seem to forget the reasoning why they got into it in the first place. But I think we should definitely keep in touch, I like your art and I like the realism that you have for some of the animal pieces you have. I mainly like to draw cartoons lol like Sonic and stuff

Love it! Your program would have saved me thousands of dollars and years of frustration! You could do videos on the history of the push for society to support ugly art. It almost seems like a form of brain washing for society to reject everything meaningful and beautiful and replace it with drips, drops, dribbles and scribbles! Now, all of a sudden eveybody is an "artist" if they can type in a promt or dribble paint on a canvas. It's a slap in the face to artists who have sacrificed blood, sweat and tears to master their craft.😖

I just found you, thanks KZbin algorithm, and LOVE this! I’ve been artistic my whole life but mostly just in my head as I have been confined by life circumstances, shall we say. Below is a “short” (shortish 😂) story of how I came to this point in time and space, of finding and subscribing to this channel - because I LOVE the advice and attitude! Oh, and my story is just that. I am NOT looking for sympathy etc, it just is what it is, if that makes sense? Anyway, now I’m in my early 60’s and mostly on my own. I’ve come across 2 things. The first is I finally found a therapist who acknowledged my stuff (which REALLY helped me to feel seen and not completely invisible, to everyone) and is now helping me to navigate, process and mitigate the years and years of abuse. The second one has an A and B. A is I stopping watching the news, not just mainstream (I haven’t watched that for at least 2 years) but also alternative sites. I’ve stopped watching all the “bad stuff” that’s going on “out there” (I watch a teeny bit but I’m pretty strict on how much I allow myself to consume). That has really helped my anxiety etc. so boosted my mental health in a good direction. I can’t recommend enough at least limiting how much of that you watch and not just consuming it “mindlessly”, like doom scrolling. Anyway, Part B is that I’ve switched from all the negative stuff to following and watching “art” videos from all sorts of everyday artists. I have loads of art supply stuff. Stuff I bought for my very creative daughter when she was doing art at school, then fashion design at university. When she moved out she left lots of it here. Everything she does now is mostly digital. That was GREAT for me because even reasonable quality art stuff is expensive and as I live on a disability pension it was such a blessing (perhaps done accidentally on purpose 😊🥰). Given my circumstances I can’t go to “school” or other classes but I also felt really stuck. Too many years of having to bury my creativity has left me feeling like my creative mind is… stuck in limbo. I have NO IDEA of my style … so finding this video was such wonderful (KZbin algorithm) serendipity because with all the steps laid out, this gives me a PLACE TO START! I’m not actually thinking of selling my art, though if that were to happen at some point that would be amazing. What I’m hoping for is it will help me get out all the stuff stuck in my head. Help me feel GOOD about MYSELF. Help me to understand me, properly, that I CAN, I’m NOT useless etc etc. I’m sure you get the idea. So, I cannot thank you enough @shadowartiste for your no nonsense approach, for not hiding the fact that you have to work but most all for your presence on here, for all the time and effort you put into helping others. I look forward to more videos and, in the meantime, binging on all the ones already posted while a sit with a sketchbook and pencil! Blessings to you, from Australia❤🇦🇺

I have been liking your videos. Alternatively, some of the greatest artists who pioneered new ways of painting were not from 2024, but in fact existed in the 1600's. I would argue it would be a mistake to discredit them and call them all "irrelevant" to aspiring artists. In fact, they were superior artists of skill than most today. that is why we still talk about them now hundreds of years later. I think this basic plan is fine, but no need to discredit a real education to do so.

So for the last 10 years I have been studying on my own(no art degree)and getting comfortable with sketching(have done that since I was little). I have had various Social Media for years, but just a smaller network. So now in my spare time I have been painting and playing around with styles and building a portfolio of work. I have leaned towards abstract painting(did realism for years). So far I have around 50 practice paintings. Of that maybe 6-10 that are of an elevated level. So your advice is spot on. For me I don't care about the money. I just have been enjoying myself getting immersed in my art. After being a wife, mom, and working full-time. So I am developing a style. So far I am not seeing a similar style so that is good. Feedback has been great so I guess I am on the right track? I have been looking at art work at professional art fairs, galleries and such and my work can stand up to them. It is just my art work can get weird... So I am trying to find my market... 🤷♀️ My next step, if people want to buy my stuff, is to set-up some kind of payment system and then the tax filing. But mainly I need to start planning on getting work out the door. I hear a common complaint from prolific artists. They run out of room... So with pieces you like least you re-use the canvas. So that is where I am at in the plan. I really dislike October as that is domain name renewal time and updating any websites you have... 😳 I don't need to make all kinds of money... I just need to keep from getting buried in artwork. 😅 This is my retirement plan... 😂 If need be I will give it away. 😊

I think developing your style and choosing your medium has to come first--how do you do a logo that shows who you are in a glance if you're just winging it? I think I can go straight to year 4. I've been an artist for over 60 years, and YES, all art does start with drawing. My parents were shocked to find me trying to draw the things around me with my brothers crayons---when I was only a year old. My father brought home a battered chalkboard and I worked on that for a long time before I moved on to paper. From there my father bought me watercolors when I was six, and I sold my first two paintings for $50. I was ten. From there, he saved up and got me a set of Windsor Newton oils--some of which I still have! After a few years of working with those, I started feeling uneasy about all the chemicals that are necessary for traditional oil paints. How do you safely dispose of them? That's when I fell in love with acrylics. To this day, I still paint with the liquid kind that I first used, but I've experimented with all sorts of things--spray paint in layers with shapes to block out the color in spots from the layers below. I've even used nail polish and house paint! I've been poor all my life, so I didn't have the luxury of having the best materials. I do know that how much you pay does not necessarily dictate the quality of the materials. I won an art contest and I won a HUGE collection of very expensive acrylics and a big drawing pad that you can also paint on. They were nice, yes. But not any nicer than anything I've ever used!

Good pep talk. Sketchbook is key. Write your ideas down. Then, get to work. And don't keep the garbage work you do. It is called a garbage can for a reason.

Bachelor of fine arts and I can barely draw, but if I call it “ learning and practicing” it’s not as scary as thinking I need to create a masterpiece every time! And I’m actually learning and I draw better Thani did 2 weeks ago and next week I’ll be better than this week.

I agree in most cases art school can be a literal waste of time. Many courses are built to just make us do the little exams like in elementary school without thinking or caring what's gonna happen once we are out of there. Teachers in the art school are not your friends, they want people to stick around and pay the university fee. I had one teacher who was good and told me to "get my degree and get out of there" but many just want to use students. I saw people sticking around art school for 7 YEARS OR MORE, because psychologically, the art school had become a safe heaven to them. Once they are out though, nobody would even care about them, with the mediocre art they were producing. Also there is the issue of contemporary art and the idea that everyone should attach stones to the walls or tape bananas. Okay if someone wants to do that type of art they are welcome but the problem is many teachers want to force students to do freaking Cattelan's bananas and that's gonna end up in disaster. No surprise most of my colleagues never picked up a brush again after leaving art school. They entered full of hope to create something and left with a modern art piece they hated themselves.

Amazing comment. So well said. Even though there are some that do well in art school, the percentage in really low. Thanks for that.

Solid advice re steps; the problem with art school or university study is very time-place-student-professors specific; I would have benefitted from more classical training as a young woman, as it would have served both my genres before having a developed voice. In reentry of art for myself, starting with sketchbooks and prepping 3D models with minor resculpting to paint. This should have been the solutions for decades as I struggled with bad workspaces. Even as a child I was bored and frustrated with drawing what I found uninteresting; the "go draw everything" approach does not work for me, though can be adapted to focus on the living/ organic forms.

Not pissing on your parade. what art collage showed me was how to create real art with your new insight and ability and distinguish art from wall decoration, sentiment and pretty pictures you see everyone looks but doesn't see, they wouldn't know real are if it bit them on the arse.learning about real art is hard, fory of us started thirteen graduated rest fell away as the pressure mounted we weren't assulimited We understood through hard work and research, you didn't get the degree for nothing not this college anyway...

There is no such thing as real art. You did not learn anything. You where brainwashed out of your creativity. People droped out not because it was hard but because it took away time from them making art and it was making there work look indistinguishable from everyone else taking those same classes

You drank the art school KoolAid that tells you that "real art" must be new, different, edgy, provocative, and even shocking, in order to be taken seriously. A certain segment of the public has bought into that thinking, to the point where we have a banana duct taped to a wall selling for over six million dollars. But most people just want something beautiful and beautifully rendered. They want to appreciate the subject matter and the skill of the artist. A painting of a soup can doesn't do it for me.
