In scandinavian countries people go socialising in a sauna. In the Netherlands older people socialise in the swimming pool (among other places). I would urge you and your wife to use more Dutch at home. It helps. There is one Australian youtuber who came here and she said to her Dutch husband "Don't speak a single word of English to me for the next three months". And he didn't. She was fluent within a year.

It’s very difficult, especially if one needs to speak a lot of English at work also (Dutch, married Asian girl).

@eline55552 ай бұрын
I did the same. Made the switch from always speaking English to (predominantly) speaking Dutch to my Australian husband. Eventually we stayed here in the Netherlands, got kids etc. I don't think he would have felt as at ease here if he hadn't learned Dutch as well as he did. The funny thing is that we now speak (mostly) English again together (to expose the kids to English as much as possible)

Good on, you moving to my country of birth the Netherlands. I know that you were in Australia where I live, I live in a suburb of Melbourne about 24 km south called Dingley Village. We've been here for a bit over 50 years, I mean in Australia, our kids are also living in the country, one in Gold Coast the other two in Melbourne. We have been back to the old country many times (14) and at one stage in 1995 we where there for nearly a year, I had a contract with a university. However, if it was up to us (my wife and me) we would go back to Holland to stay, but than again, our children would hardly see us and the same goes for our grandchildren (7) and 2 great grandchildren, so that's out of the question. Our children have been to the Netherlands on a number of occasions. Keep on making videos of Holland, because that really warms up my heart and it feels I am being there for a short moment. My cousin used to live in Flevoland (Almere) but moved to a nice place Kampen, close by where I spend some time when I was conscripted in the army in 1961, but that is a different story. Thank you for these marvellous videos, regards Gerard.

Swimming is not that popular for younger people, especially during the day when there's work/school/friends, but it's a very safe way to exercize because you don't put a lot of strain on your joints and you don't have to support your own weight, so especially for those who are already injured or not very mobile anymore it's a very nice sport

Dutch people are actually not cheap. They just want to save and spend their money on more important things to do. Like vacations (often far abroad), traveling around, going out with friends and family etc. Basically just to do the fun parts of living and enjoying life as a whole. Sure, we Dutchies like pretty (expensive) stuff and nice looking (designer) clothes as well. But mostly it is not our number one priority to have in life. So why not save a penny or two left and right, so you can spend it later on all of these things? So NO, (most) Dutch people are NOT cheap, they are just smart spenders.

My folks lived in Den Haag for a couple of years and loved it (Mom's 90 and says she'd go back there in a flash). The funny bit was that the supermarket closest to their apartment was an Albert Heijn, and Mom hated it because the staff at this particular store seemed to go out of their way to be nasty -- and the older you were, the nastier & less respectful they were, regardless of your nationality. Fast-forward to a couple of years after they returned Stateside, and the Albert Heijn company bought out the largest local supermarket company... :-)

What I found (and find) most confusing when dealing with people from India (and I have managed several IT development teams of them in Mumbay and Kerala) is when asking for a 'yes' or 'no'. Either it is always 'yes!' even when a 'no' would be completely appropriate or necessary, or they say 'yes' and shake their head in a fashion that would for Dutch person would mean 'no'. That creates cognitive dissonance and makes me always assume a 'no' until proven otherwise. Also, if the matter is about competence, ability or professionality, the answer will be invariably a first 'yes' (almost as if to say; 'of course'.) even though the measure up to which that could be relied upon would be highly questionable. That said, once a 'yes' is given, then it becomes a (more often than not fruitless) matter of honour to make it so if it kills him/her and one can observe someone nearly literally contort in unnatural and unhealthy gyrations to deliver on promises. The most dangerous question would be: 'Do you understand what I am explaining here?', because the answer will invariably be affirmative and afterward one can see the simple instruction and task metastasize into a mega-project, spanning efforts from friends and relations over several days and resulting in something into something entirely different than asked for. This definitely a cultural clash between practical Dutch directness and Indian undue sense of honour that leads assumption that a straight 'no' can never be a valid and desirable answer.

Hello. A nice video, i myself have been living in NL for last 3 years with my family and agree to most of what you said, but we need to acknowledge a fact that the population is ageing at much faster rate in Europe and Netherlands in particular there is a strain of the housing, health care, that is reason you see so many senior citizens around. Its like you have all the comfort and decent money here but still its a struggle to get a simple doctors appointment. Economy is not doing good with less than 1% growth and the outlook is poor. Many big companies are moving out of NL or moving task out to low cost destination making NL less competitive. Though the socialist approach helps make life easier but has its own set of bigger problems which are now showing up in the economy - immigration is a issue and integration in spite of speaking Dutch can be a challenge if you are not native i see this. It would be good to also share the negatives as dutch would. this is my prespective.

Hi Mate. It was a really informative video. Actually, I am in the same situation right now. I came to Australia from Turkey with a work visa 1 year ago. And I work here as a field service engineer. Since the mining sector is busy, I usually go to the mines and stay for a few days, sometimes up to 10 days, and then I come to the city to be with my family. When you work in a mine you can earn a good salary but it is really hard work and being away from your family all the time is mentally tiring. A week ago I received an offer from the Netherlands from the same company and the same position, field service engineer. And now I am very confused. I am very confused about the weather, salary, English, Dutch and proximity to Turkey. If I choose the Netherlands, I don't have the luxury of coming back if I regret it. As someone who has been to both countries, can you give me any advice? By the way, I live in Liverpool in NSW. Frankly, I can't say that I like it very much. Maybe it's because Melbourne makes me feel better, maybe because I think it's a bit like Istanbul. Thanks in advance

Hey, yeah it is a tough one. One major difference is the language barrier if someone really wants to blend in a Dutch society but if you are in Amsterdam, there are many internationals living here or any other big city. But i am assuming you will be posted in smaller city. However, the weather definitely is not even close to how it is as compared to Australia(Australia is so much better) And the salary is also not as good as how it is in Australia. Melbourne is just so so cool. If I were you, I won’t move here being in the job position you are in but please ask other people for their opinions as well.

Downsides are still the Dutch don’t like to make new friends outside of the circle they already have. Partly because the school system is set up to where you have the same grades from elementary to highschool in the same building. Also weather is still pretty bad. If you come from a 3rd world country then you won’t be bored, but if you come from the U.S or any other major city abroad then you’ll likely get bored once you’ve seen most things. Architecture and landscape is not much different and flat. Houses are expensive and old for what you get. Most people I know want to leave actually. I’d say the best part about living here is that you can travel easily within Europe to change scenery but that’s about it if I’m being honest. Food is also okay but nothing to brag home about and when you live here 9/10 you’ll know multiple people who are “depressed”.

I am not a believer in any religion, but being verbally affronted in school and on the street by so called (Dutch) Christians to believe what they believe and stating that christianity is the only true religion and the truth for most of my life. They couldn’t accept that I did not want to believe what they did. I found that bullying and Christians in our country do that still, they don’t respect people who have another opinion or don’t have any religion. And tolerating other people from all origins with their opinions and beliefs is human and not everyone from another country wants to convert you! If you are starting a conversation with anybody, people from a different culture are you then being a true christian? I believe that tolerance is a christian value as fas as I know. Right?

@@corjp With a shiny example: the inquisition. But anyway, it is the people that make a religion aggressive, and often aggressive religions are lead by aggressive religious leaders. They misuse a religion to gain power. E.g. Iran.

You don't know until you try it. In general the combination of salt and sweet can be really tasty, think caramel with sea-salt, rather popular.

Yep, you do need two bicycles. The shittier the better and a nice one. My shitty bike is so shitty that no one wants to steal it. It's truly hideous. It's like a pink crackhouse on wheels

I heard taxes are sick almost 50%
@chipdale4903 ай бұрын
Yes they are. But these taxes are put to good use. Generally.. 😅
@ChristiaanHW3 ай бұрын
yes taxes might be high, but those taxes are used to pay for a lot of things. a few things they are used for: - safe roads, for cars, public transport and bikes. - safe and clean drinking water straight from your home tap. no where in the country do you have to buy bottled water, tap water is safe and clean even in the smallest villages. - good electricity, we almost never have power outages. the few that do occur are mostly due to the a sub station getting damaged by outside forces (hit by car or getting vandalized) but those outages are solved within a few hours. - a good social benefits system that ensures pregnant women, sick people and people who lose their jobs are taken care of and can still make ends meet. - a safe society. emergency services are top class and the people working in them are dependable and pleasant to deal with. - safe, clean public spaces. squares, streets, parks, beaches and playground are kept clean and are safe. - and so much more. we pay a lot, but because of that the state has a lot of money to pay for the things that makes life nice and comfortable

and don't forget the amount of taxes we pay to keep us safe from the water (see/rivers and extreme rainfall).

Please inform yourself and don’t believe everything some comments tell you on the internet. The average tax rate (belasting druk) in the Netherlands is about 38%, it’s a normal average in Europe. You get a very organised country with good social security, good health care , safety and level of education in return. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Belastingdruk

That's not correct. Yes, the highest tariff is about 50% but that only applies only to the part of your taxable income that exceeds I believe 64000 eur, the part below that threshold is taxed with 37 %. And your taxable income is your gross income minus fixed deductions e,g, for having childeren and a deduction of 38% of the interest for your mortgage.
