In this episode of Coin Quest: Nickels, we are coin roll hunting our 20th full box of nickels in search of rare and valuable coins to fill in our nickel collection books! Might want to check those 39p nickels for a notched R on pluribus. It could possibly be a Henning nickel, which was a counterfeit and they are worth money. If it’s a Henning nickel, it will also weigh up differently.

I bought two nickel boxes, each had a penny in each box, lol. One was a 1924 Wheaty so I was happy, lol and each box gave me a war nickel each. Nickels are fun to crack open when you hit on them, but I would say most of the time it goes very slow of getting a decent hit.

While watching this I stumbled upon a very odd nickel myself... I could tell the weight was off... Yes after clocking the nickel it was 4.53 grams not 5.0... So I have a 1986 P Nickel that weighs 4.53 Grams with very tight grain lines running up and down whole coin... Any idea why it's 4.53 on scale?

That rainbow colored nickel looks like someone tried acetone and heat...never a good idea with nickels, or any coin for that matter. I put a new nickel into side cutters, and one into a small set of bolt cutters, just because. It was small bolt cutters, side cutters (wire cutters) did not give a full cut on the other edge.

If you don’t mind a small correction, it was somewhat misleading to say that here in the 2020’s, a 1964 Jefferson nickel is “the most common nickel that you can possibly find”. It would have been far more accurate and informative to state that the 1964 D Jefferson nickel still holds the record for the HIGHEST MINTAGE TOTAL ever for any nickel minted in the United States. The problem with stating that it’s the “most common nickel that you can find”is that that was true DECADES AGO, but it isn’t true ANYMORE. Far more common today (as I write this) are the 2022 and 2023 Jefferson nickels, which understandably seem to be all over the place in change, everywhere I go. Secondary to that are nickels minted within the last 8 to 10 years, or so. At any rate, the 1964 date Jefferson nickels being a dominant presence in your pocket change is something that slowly diminished over time, and it already happened many years ago. Time and billions of newer nickels being minted has now largely erased that situation and made it so that the ‘64 Jefferson nickel is far less common in your pocket change and in circulation in general than it used to be. Same with all of those old nickels from the 40s and 50s and early 60s. (Plus the ‘38 and ‘39 Jefferson’s, of course.) Oh, you can still find one of the 1964 (and older) Jefferson nickels here and there in change, or if you go roll hunting for old nickels, but when I first started doing that as a kid over 50 years ago in the early 70s, trust me, the 1964 and pre-1964 Jefferson nickels were far more common, and I mean FAR MORE common. It was a lot of fun, plucking those nickels from the 40’s and 50’s out of the rolls and putting them in my jar at home. There were on average at least a few pre-1960 dates in every roll (I saved all pre-1960 dates. 1960 was my cutoff year back then). Being that I lived in San Francisco as a child, there were many with the S mint mark in the rolls I got from the bank and once in a while there was even the occasional, somewhat rare wartime silver clad nickel. (Those were rare even 50 years ago-but they are much more rare in change now.) All the Jefferson nickels that I kept with the S mint mark were pre-1956-that is, through 1955. Starting in ‘56, No S mint mark nickels were minted for a number of years. All of the above still exist in circulation, but 50 years later, all of the dates I’m talking about have just become that much rarer and harder to find. And that includes the 1964 Jefferson nickel. It’s nowhere near as common as dates from recent years are now. But it is true that it was minted in such vast numbers that it’s still (probably) only worth a nickel unless it’s in mint condition. Worn circulated specimens are only worth five cents, and that’s all they’re ever going to be worth for the foreseeable future-which means they’re actually worth less and less all the time (just like every other nickel that’s only worth five cents) because a nickel is worth less and less all the time, generally speaking. (Think about it.) But at any rate, the ‘64 Jefferson nickels are not very “common” anymore (although on average, you still can find the occasional specimen if you check through enough rolls or loose nickels.) Sooner or later, you might get one in change-but in 2023 (as I write this), the nickels that are now in circulation with the forward-facing Jefferson on the obverse (minted since 2006) far outnumber the nickels that are now in circulation with the profile of Jefferson obverse design that was used up until 2004.
