Hello Rupert, This is Ram again. Thank you for the wonderful videos :) "If some friends were coming to my house next week, I would invite them to swim with me". I got a doubt on this example. Here, we're saying "were coming" means it is a past but "next week" means it is a future. I don't understand the meaning here. "If some friends were coming to my house next week" clause confuses me. Please clarify sir.
@EnglishwithRupert
@EnglishwithRupert 3 күн бұрын
Hi! The rules for the past tense are a bit different because this is a 2nd conditional - this conditional uses a past tense to be hypothetical about a present situation - however, "were coming" is the past continuous hypothetical equivalent of the present continuous for future arrangements - we've backshifted the tense purely to show we are being hypothetical. Thanks for introducing an issue I wish I'd included in the video 😁👍

... hi Rupert ... I´ve encountered in a book by Raymond Chandler: "Little by little the roar of the traffic quieted down, The sky lost its glare. Over in the west it would be red." ... I would greatly appreciate your (certainly authoritative) understanding of the last sentence ... thank you very much ... Vladimír ...

That's an interesting puzzle 😁! It's hard to be certain without reading more, but I'm guessing this use of "would" is "future in the past" - an anticipation of what was just about to happen. It feels as if the author has played with the rules of English a little, though, which is quite a normal thing that writers for pleasure do 🙂
@vladimirb5319

@@EnglishwithRupert ... my fault ... I should have mentioned that the narrator was in a room with windows looking out to the east ... the western sky was thus not seen ... ... the Czech translator (a really competent lady) used the Czech equivalent of "Over in the west ´the sky will surely be´ red" ... thanks again for your time ...
@EnglishwithRupert
@EnglishwithRupert Ай бұрын
No problem! In that case, it might be a use of "would" to mean "this is how I imagined it to be". It doesn't feel like a natural use of the word if the author is looking at the scene.

Hi! People tend to introduce the word "would" in order to be more polite (which I think I mentioned in the "requests" section), which may explain some of the "ungrammatical" uses you mention?

It's not technically a correct answer, grammatically, but I think what they are doing here is imagining their answer because they aren't certain - so it comes under the "speculating/hypothetical" meaning of would

I haven't created so many writing videos for KZbin, but I have a short (and low cost) course on Udemy on Essay Writing, but it has principles which could be useful for anyone trying to improve writing in English 🙂

When you learn the basics of would and keep it simple you'll realise that it's not at all complicated, especially if you mother tongue is derived from Latin, like Spanish, Italian, French, Portuguese. And even if it's German your native language you shouldn't find much trouble.

How could i express or say this? Suppose i say to one of my friends.. Mm his girlfriend must be so beautiful. And now he's asking me that how do i know even? So I'm like: *"I just meant whoever his girlfriend MIGHT BE/WOULD BE/OR "IS" ?* (However i don't know in the present moment whether he has girlfriend or not but he's cool and collegian so i guess and here I'm not guessing about having girlfriend but i believe he has and just saying for no reason) So here how could say??
@EnglishwithRupert
@EnglishwithRupert Ай бұрын
Hi! I'll tell you what I think, but please reply if you think I misunderstood you 🙂 If you say "might be", you believe he has a girlfriend, but aren't sure who she is. If you say "would be", I think you aren't assuming he has a girlfriend now (so it is to some extent "unreal"), but you are talking about a possibility in the present or future.
@nirajthakor9748
@nirajthakor9748 Ай бұрын
@@EnglishwithRupert Thank you for replying.. so i meant that beyond my knowledge if he has a girlfriend but but I'm not for having a girlfriend or not but just said that for no reason. Okay so if i say "Whoever his girlfriend "might be" does it mean even although I don't know in reality he has a girlfriend or not 'perhaps he doesn't have even' still "Might be" will work here?? ( Because I'm not here guessing about having a girlfriend or not I'm more focusing on she must be beautiful, and I'm getting more confused here that if i say "She must be beautiful" so to fulfill "Must" should sentence have a logical statement? ) - Whoever his girlfriend might be ( in the present, the thing i just don't know whether he has or not even i have never tried to get know about it ) but when i continue my sentence "Whoever his girlfriend might be, she is beautiful or must be beautiful?? Okay please let me put another example. "Whatever his compulsions might be" ( So here did i say with having belief that he has some compulsion (in the present beyond my knowledge)) ?? In girlfriend one example "Whoever his girlfriend might be" ( but i haven't meant to say that ONLY IF he has a girlfriend ONLY THEN she must be beautiful ) Noooo while i said that WHOEVER ( I don't know literally ) but I'm not guessing ohhhhhh does he have a girlfriend? Noo i don't care I'm INDEPENDENT to say anything just should be the correct grammar. 😅 "Whoever his girlfriend might be" *( IN THE PRESENT... PRESENT ... PRESENT NOT FOR FUTUREEEE IF HE HAS GIRLFRIEND FOR ME YESS "HE HAS" BECAUSE I WANT TO CONVEY MY POINT AND LATER I GOT TO KNOW THAT HE DON'T HAVE ANY GIRLFRIEND )*
@EnglishwithRupert
@EnglishwithRupert Ай бұрын
You've asked lots of good questions there! Let me respond to your continued sentence. I would write "Whoever his girlfriend might be, she would be/must be beautiful" Would = emphasis "I'm guessing" Must = emphasis "I strongly believe"

@@EnglishwithRupert Sir thank you so much for your back to back answers! 👏 So, i would be grateful if you answer me all this queries..! And this time i put it number wise. 1) Suppose I'm in class 10 and one of my friends is say to me what to do and not in college and reply to him "What if don't pass 10th" or "What if i didn't pass 10th" So what's the difference between these two and what's best to use?? I'm so confused in subjunctive specially in past one. 2) I wish i went or I wish i would go?? 3) My dilemma is here Sir.. *"They wouldn't or might not even know that their house is burglarizedd"* ( in the present somehow i got to know this news and the house owner isn't at home and I'm saying it to myself ) So here I'm not guessing or speculating but just saying it for no reason I mean sometimes we say like this? When we aren't actually emphasizing on something but just express things this way..Even we know they absolutely don't know about it still?? If i used "MUST" then it wouldn't imply that I'm guessing something with strong and firm evidence?? 4) let's say I'm biking to my home and suddenly i encounter a pothole and i have to move aside my two wheeler in no time to avoid it and a lady is behind me on her two-wheeler hit into it and starts quarreling and i say "HOW WOULD I KNOW (in advance) that there's pothole ahead?" So this would be correct? Because ( I'm not talking about any future thing ) I'm saying it for present and it's very obvious, I don't know how to express such a thing. Please correct me if I'm wrong and thanks in advance 🙏
