Great review, I played this loads as a kid but found it really difficult to find all the collectables and just replayed the same levels over and over. Such was life before google.

The scream attack literally scared me so much as a kid, and that's all I remember because I couldn't get past it 😂

Did you say that swimming levels were the scrounge of platformers? Might want to look up the word scourge. :) Sorry to be that guy. Fun video though on a fun looking game!

In Eurocom's defense, this was a true full 3D N64-style platformer on the PS1. Even classics like the Crash Bandicoot and Croc series can't match that distinction. A few other developers thought they could do it on the hardware as well (Bubsy 3D, jersey devil anyone?). This was quite a feat.

I played it on Steam, because that was part of Piko Interactive's N64 release Kickstarter - if they succeeded, they'd port the game (the PSX version, I believe) to Steam. Now I say _I think_ it's the PSX version, but I'm actually not sure - they also wanted to make a _Dreamcast_ version (if they hit a stretch goal which they didn't) which would have the best graphics/performance and whatever else was gained from the N64 version, but retain the CG cutscenes from the PSX one... so maybe the Steam version is that version? At any rate, it had a weird save system where they ported over the console save menu and you had to mess with hotkeys that represented virtual memory cards or something (it's been awhile since I played it), and it still seemed to have issues maintaining progression. I hope they patched it with something more.... natural to the PC platform, but I guess I'd have to reinstall it to find out. I know the game itself is perfectly decent with some fun presentation/visuals and ideas, and I know I would've loved it back in the day playing with friends or my sister, but that PC port is definitely a questionable way to experience it. I always wondered if I should just pick up a copy of the PSX version and play it the preferred way to experience it, as a console game. So it was neat to see your perspective on things from someone who actually played it on console. Looking forward to whatever PSX obscurities you discover next! I'm with you on the 3D Platformer front there - there's a lot of games that I've only learned about over the past few years that look (and apparently *are)* quite decent and clearly riff on Spyro's design specifically. Kingsley's Adventure, Muppet Monster Adventure, Jinx, etc. There's a LOT of games that seemingly looked at Insomniac's work and said, "Oh! That's how to do that? We _can do that"_ and actually went and did a capable job somehow even if no magazines at the time cared to talk about them much, lol. I even recently bought a game called Phix's Adventure that I don't remember seeing in any gaming magazine back in the day at all. Its not one from the Spyro mold (it's Japanese-developed instead, and honestly kinda reminds me more of Pac Man World or Bomberman 64), but yeah - never heard of it, it looked cute and colorful, so I gave it a whirl 'cuz it was only $3. Not exactly a classic, but perfectly decent, and another one of these 3D Platformers that just exist on the PSX that no one seems to talk about much. It's weird.

This game was meant for kids but it's so hard I'm 27 and I completed the game but there were some levels that were so hard that I almost gave up trying to beat the game and I was playing on Easy mode too
