Thank you, very nice bowl with great explanation. Suggestion; instead of band clamps, I just use 15 pounds of free weights to apply pressure while the glue cures. It’s easier then messing with the band, less chance of misalignment of the glue joints.

Beautiful bowl. The contrast between those woods is really effective, and the spalting just adds to it.

Stephen...thanks for your many videos ( very informative) and very good work..have been using quite a bit of pecan wood lately and encountered the same worm pits, they are beautiful in the finished product but cumbersome to dig out, like you, I tried several things to try and dig them out, finally settled on pocket knife. Will try to send some pictures. Was fortunate to have a friend that gave me pick up load of pecan logs. Now just trying to find use for them all. Keep up the good work.

Nice looking bowl Stephen. Well done. I am in the middle of doing an economy bowl myself and watched your video for some tips. Mine is walnut with a white corian top. Hope it comes out as nice as yours. Thanks, Matt
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Wow, Matt. That should be one fine looking bowl when you finish. I Love the look of Walnut. One potential problem which may not effect your bowl is the difference in material. I love the idea. However; The walnut will contract and expand with humidity I am just wandering how it will react with Corian which will not move at all. Very interesting. Would you send me a pic when you complete the bowl I would absolutely love to see it. Good luck on your build. Thank you for commenting and hope you got something from my video.

Thank you John for your comments. I am glad you enjoy watching my videos and find them helpful. I really like my drum sander and still use it for final thickness sanding on parts such as in this video. I do now have my planer running like a top and will use it for all the initial thickness. Glad you like the sander. I have had it now for about 5 years and it still runs true and does a great job. I am now designing another that should be a little safer and not lathe mounted. Thank you for your comments, I just have a couple of parts to purchase an I will have my planer up and running. Got a good deal in the Jet 13" planer/moulder, but it was used and just needs a little work. The dangerous side of the sander is in the front and I try to keep fingers and clothing from the front. Anyway, I am now designing a new drum sander which will be safer with stationary guard and dust collection. Thank you for your concerns, I welcome them here. Thanks Ben, These bowls are also known as a bowl from a board. I have made several of these and I am still amazed at the size bowls you can get from just a board. There was literally less than one board foot in this bowl. I am glad you liked it. There is more work involved, but if it all comes together right, it makes a rather nice piece. Let me know how you like the Drum sander video. Thanks for commenting and supporting my channel.

Nice bowl. I bet your wife won't let go of this one! I picked up a technique somewhere on joining perfect joints (think it was from wwgoa). If you run one board face out and the other face to the fence, it doesn't matter whether your fence is slightly off. The angles complement and will glue up true.
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks Allan, for the compliment on the bowl. You are right, it is sitting on the kitchen table right now. Ha. The technique you are describing is extremely accurate. I believe I have seen it before and it was very interesting how it all works out as a "Perfect" glue joint. Thank you Allan for your suggestions and comments.

Another way to cut the circles is to mount the board on the lathe (don't half to cut it in half) on a waste block, and use a thin parting tool coming in from the front at the 45* angle towards you.

Really like your technique... And your drum sander. When you cut the circles out on the bandsaw, what angle did you set the table? Nice job! Chris
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Chris for commenting and for your question. On this bowl I used 45deg. However you can use whatever angle you would like. Smaller angles will result in a slimmer looking bowl where larger angles will result in wider looking bowls. Hope I have been helpful. Thanks for commenting and supporting my channel.

I love the videos. I am new to turning, and have learned a lot from you thus far. I do have a question though. Are the bowls you make purely decorative or are they food safe, so you can use it as a fruit or salad bowl? Also, the vases you make I'm assuming they are purely decorative or are they actually functional to use as a live flower vase? I look forward to seeing more projects come out of your shop. In a couple weeks I'm picking up the harbor freight knock off of your grizzly lathe to start larger projects. I can't wait! Thanks for the videos. I love them!

Thank you Joe for your kind comments. Most all of my bowls are food safe once cured. I also have a 2 part video on making a waterproof vase if you are interested here is the link. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp-3dYh-oMt-g5Y Good luck with your new lathe and just remember to be patient and make every cut a practice cut. Take care I hope this helps.

Stephen, great job as usual. The bowl is beautiful. I'm a beginner so please excuse this question. You took great pains to be sure the glue joints lined up but I thought the conventional wisdom was to overlap joints for strength purposes. Am I incorrect or is this a special circumstance? Thanks for all you do to educate new turners.
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you Bruce for your comments and your question. Well if this had been a segmented piece with lots of small pieces I would have definitely staggered the joints. However, with these pieces I really have a lot of glue surfaces. and they are all on the long grain which will be the strongest joint between the two pieces rather than the weaker endgrain which is glued on the conventional segmented pieces. I have no worries about the glue joints ever coming apart. Just food for thought. These joints are very strong. Thank you for your questions and for supporting my channel.

Hey Stephen, always really enjoy your videos bud. I've noticed in a couple of them that I've watched recently though that you refer to the finish you're using as Tung Oil. I'm sure you already know this but the Minwax tung oil "finish" is actually a varnish that contains very little actual tung oil and lots of thinner. I mention this because some folks reading that Tung Oil is food safe (which the 100% pure Tung Oil is) might use the Minwax thinking it's food safe after hearing you call it Tung Oil rather than tung oil "finish" and might not realize the Minwax is not an approved food safe finish. Keep up the great work and videos, Tim
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 7 жыл бұрын
Thank you Tim. Good point. This is probably my favorite finish and is my go to for most projects. I don't know if Tung Oil is food safe or not. I also know that the Minwax brand is not pure Tung Oil. I do not claim that it is food safe either. Did you also know that Teflon is a toxin and is used extensively on the surfaces of pots and pans. So just what is food safe. Does it have to be eaten or can just touching it to your mouth kill you. I have no clue so I do not tell people it is food safe unless the label states it.

LOL I'm right there with ya bud, I'm not one of the food safe nazzies that takes the food safe subject to extremes. I only mentioned it because you are one of the more safety conscious guys I watch. I've used the minwax some myself and really like it. Thanks for the great videos brother, I learn lots of cool stuff watching your channel. atb Tim

Thank you Stephen, beautiful turning. I am wondering if you laminate more boards thus making your original stock thicker and your peaces wider. Could you cut a shallow Ogee, giving the shape more of a curve. Do you think that would be possible?

Thanks Stephen. Do you ever have a problem turning a softer wood like mahogany and a harder wood like pecan. I used some scraps of walnut, poplar and cherry and even though the bud vase came out ok I had a little trouble with finish turning and ALOT of trouble sanding since they were of different hardness. Maybe just me? PS that finish was pretty sweet!
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you James for commenting. I used to really have problems with the differences in hardness. I found that I was just being a little to aggressive. if you can feel the differences as like a chatter. You may be to aggressive. this will cause you to cut softer woods deeper than the harder ones. The same goes with sanding. Try sanding larger areas instead of concentrating in smaller areas. I really like the Paste wax finish. Prep work must be very good to get it right though. I will always finish to at least 400 grit and make sure each prior grit had done it's job before moving on to the next. Wax will show even hairline scratches like a sore thumb. Thanks James for commenting and I hope I have been of help.

Hello Stephen, congratulations for your work and your videos, it is very nice and I am learning a lot with then. I would like to ask you how yo do the sanding of your bowls? Do you use any power tools or just by hand? All the best
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Thank you sir for your Question. I do have a power sanding system. However, it is rarely used on bowls. Most bowls are all hand sanded first with the lathe running slow and then rubbed with the grain to remove any tool and sanding marks. Hope you find this helpful and I'm glad you are enjoying my videos. Thank you for commenting.
@konanlang
@konanlang 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks a lot for the fast answer Stephen, can I ask you some more questions? What do you think that is the secret of the hand sanding? I am doing it, but in the end I always have the grid marks that I can't take out. I also would like to ask you about turning blanks, when you cut then in the chainsaw, can you let it dry and then turn it? Or you always turn it right after you cut then. Thanks a lot
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 10 жыл бұрын
Well for starters, before I begin sanding I will get the surface as smooth as possible with my tools. Any visible scratches will be extremely hard to sand out. Sanding on the lathe will speed the process, just make sure to hand sand back with the grain. Don't sand so hard that you create other scratches that you can't get out with the next grit. With my bowl blanks sometimes I will store them and let them dry. Other times I will rough them out and finish them after they are dry. If you finish a bowl that is green and do not turn it thin enough and keep the thickness very uniform then it invites cracking. I hope you find this helpful. Thanks for the questions. Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Thanks for these great videos, Stephen! They are very helpful and well done. I enjoy very much the fact that you covered every aspect of the process. I have two questions: - beginning at 32:40, are you applying another layer of wax? - what model of thickness planer did you get? Cheers

I love it now that I finally got it running. Thanks for commenting. I hope I answered your questions well enough.

Stephen Ogle I really appreciate your prompt reply. So, if I understand correctly, for the buffing process you use just a dry, clean, paper towel with no oil/lacquer/varnish/wax on it, right?
@StephenOgle
@StephenOgle 9 жыл бұрын
That is correct. I applied two coats of the Finishing Wax wiping the excess off between coats and then once the wax is cured. Simply buff lightly with a clean paper towel for a nice shine/sheen. Thanks again for your questions.

Fantastic video as always! I wondered how did you decide the distances to make your circles? I think you said you made that at 1 1/2 inch increments and it fit perfectly, but wasn't sure how you got to that number. Is it contingent on the thickness of the boards? Thanks in advance!

Thank you Jeff. I am glad you are going to try this bowl. I think you will enjoy the project. I use the Tung oil to bring out the colors in the wood and as a sanding sealer, so yes, I do sand after the Tung oil. Then finish with Minwax Finishing Paste Wax although any brand should give you very similar results. I hope this helps.
