I think we fans often identify with the lyrics and also with them as people, cause they believe in their lyrics too. It's all much more authentic and realer than the sugarcoated bubblegum mainstream pop🍭🤪. Just my take on it🤷‍♀️🙂

Many of their old songs still sound great to today standards and they seem very intelligent regarding what they do in their career and artistically, I mean they don't look like those very old very boring big rock acts making a parody of themselves

For me I feel in love with DM in 1984, I was 9 and my parents had just divorced and we moved to Orlando. Orlando was ahead of the music industry in the 80's the radio stations played DMs songs all the time. I think their passion has always been in their music and that is why 40 years later they are still going strong. Now at 45 years old with 3 kids of my own, I have introduced them to DMs music and they love it too!

Dear Vaughan, I am the devoted fan of Depeche Mode, listened to them as far as I remember. I had loads of arguments with my partner , who doesn't like them, except few tracks. You said so correctly, this great band wasn't popular in UK- what a shame...anyway, they did and still doing music history! Thank you for very catchy mini series about Depeche Mode! It's so amazing , that I have professional proof of my music taste!!! Absolutely. Martin's lyrics deal more with questions of the soul, the sacred, the search for absolution, etc then most any other group one can find- even in "Christian" music. These are the substantive questions of moral philosophy.

For me it’s quite simple - their songs have resonated with me in a way that no other band has before or since. Those songs - about longing, love and loss - spoke to the introverted teenager that I was in the late 80s and I just thought they were the coolest band on Earth. I am only 20 y.o., but it started about 5 years ago, with Enjoy the Silence, and then it continued. Have seen them twice already and hoping in this strange time to see them at least once more. When you listen to those songs, the lyrics... you feel what is Dave singing. Each album has something unique... When you are happy you know exactly which song to listen, when you are down again. I feel that it's Martin's songwriting that has kept them relevant and earned them new fans over the years. I was still in diapers when Violator was released, so by the time I was listening to music as a teenager, songs like Personal Jesus seemed very dated, yet many of the bands that I was listening to professed them as an influence in interviews, so I recognized that there might be something I was missing. Covers by artists like Marilyn Manson and Rammstein seem just as passé now, but I really loved the songs even in those versions, and hearing those versions convinced me to give the originals a chance, and the ball just kept rolling from there.

Of hearing them for the first time... I don't remember - my parents are huge fans, so DM were soundtrack of my life since my early years. But I remember attending my first concert. Summer 2013, cloudy day in Moscow, my parents take me to a stadium, and then I see THEM. A day to remember! It was like a vision, something entirely new, something so incredible... 7 years passed, still in love with this band.

Depeche Mode first albums captured and sampled the sounds of a dying industrial Great-Britain. I would not be surprised if they would come up today with a album made with sounds of nature. Martin grew with unsaid truths, and music was his escape. A song of Depeche Mode is like a painting of Dali, you think you understand what you are hearing or seeing, but there are meanings appearing according to the angle you take.

I am 29, the first time I heard them I was about 8 or 9 years old and I was fascinated. Now as an adult I identify with their lyrics and the atmosphere of the songs and I think that is what has kept them afloat all these years, for all that they transmit in a beautiful way. In addition, I also believe in that miracle of the universe of having brought them together to do a work that has already transcended and I understand why Alan is so missed. I think I got into them when I was around 12 or 13 when my father introduced me to them and I‘m so glad he did !! :) They really shaped my music taste into what it is now and they have a very special place in my heart. If my memory serves me right, the 1999 Steve Malins biography suggested that Depeche Mode were the third most popular musician/band in the former Soviet Union (after The Beatles and The Police).

For me it's a full package, Martin beeing genius, Dave's voice and carisma, Andy as a peacemaker of a band and, last, but not the least, Mr Wilder. Emotion is the word I'm trying to explain and it's very hard to do that. My friend from High school introduced me to DM, it was in 1991, his parents were working in Germany, and, as you know, Germany was always their base. The lyrics, the way I found myself in the songs, to cut the ling story short, I grew up with them in every possible way.

I bought a Dave Gahan Music for the Masses era replica leather jacket with the studs in the elbows, shoulder pads and small waist. I still have it in excellent condition. Cost £145 back in early 88. Impossible to drive a car in it as it felt ridged to wear. Medieval jousting armour is more flexible.

Ian Fisher I made one of these jackets myself back in the 80's, I already had a black leather jacket so I bought some studs and attached them which took me hours and then wore it to the music for the masses concert it made me feel so good, such great memories

You got to touch upon the drug influence to Depeche Mode's sound. How trippy it is. I knew about Depeche Mode's popular music in the early 90's. But I did not become a huge fan until one night I was tripping balls and happened to pop Music for the Masses into my walkman. And I was like, "Oh my God! This is the most amazing band in the universe!" Music for the Masses is a total trip! And that's when I went from a casual fan to a diehard fan.

Oh damn. Depeche is so much for me. When I was a little boy, my dad being hardcore DM fan, played lots of early DM on our casette player. That was 15 or more years ago. Now after that time and a brake from DM music by my dad, I am coming back to them, exploring the sounds that got stuck in my head when I was a 2 year old kid. Hearing the riff of Told You So, melody that I always knew, but haven't heard it for ages, was so intense and fenomenal feeling - I don't think I could ever describe it. Imagine this: >lvl 15 >being on vc on Discord with friends >searching for music for a party >clicking on Construction Time Again to add Everything Counts to the playlist >being bored and checking other songs >after listening to Told You So for 10 seconds your mind does a warp speed flashback to all memories from 00s, the best ones, all greatest moments >leaving the vc and going out to take a long walk with CTA on the headphones That was so amazing feeling, I hope I'll find more such songs.

I am 49 years old and I must say im more obsessed with DM now than i was as a teenager🤣 and I was obsessed even as a teenager😁. Its nearly impossible to describe why DM still gives you goosebumps. Even if you have listen to some tracks over and over again during the years i never get tired or bored with them. Its the whole package: lyrics, arrangement, sound, performances, looks...They have a very unique sound and the music have special atmosphere. And I have always been a sucker for melancolic melodys and intelligent lyrics, what a combo🖤. Martin is a genius and Dave...my god, what a frontman, i am in awe❤️. Yes, you are correct, A broken frame is a masterpiece album, so underrated especially by the band themselves, Dave’s voice is great on that album and the music sounds great when they played it live, I was in middle school when I used to play the live songs from that album. Marsheaux did an excellent cover of the whole album with a modern synth style and always nice to hear the album with a twist with a female voice. Wish I could listen to any of those songs on DM’s current live sets, but I know it is a long shot.

I love DM with all my soul. I'm glad I grew up in the 80's. I remember where I was when I first heard them. I was standing in the driveway of our Pennsylvania home when I heard People are People emanating out of the next door neighbors second story window. DM has given me so much hope and perspective over the years. Thank you.

Dear Vaughn, thanks a lot for your very sensitive view on the band. You show so much love and passion for them and you express exactly my feelings for their sound and that’s so beautiful and precious for me. In my youth I wasn’t too much into music. I listened to mainstream music and the radio charts. DM songs I just heard in the Radio. I always liked their music a lot but it didn’t lead me to buy DM records, to go to their concerts and to get more into the music. This I sincerely regret today. I started deejaying and buying electronic music, House and Techno records from the age of twenty. I do it until nearly 30 years now and I guess that I got a good feeling for quality electronic grooves. Well, but I didn’t follow DMs music over the years. Sometimes a new single in the radio but I didn’t take notice of them much. In 2016 a friend got a ticket for the DM Spirit Tour Concert in Olympia Stadium in Berlin. My friend couldn’t go so I took her ticket spontaneously. Before DM Algiers played and I quite liked it. And then DM entered the stage and they impressed me deeply from the first second. Dave’s voice singing „Going Backwards“ and filling this big ground with his baritone. Wow. In the middle of the concert, I think when they played „everything Counts“, a thunderstorm started and heaviest rain came down. The crowd even went more crazy, celebrating every flash and thunder. It was a big rock show and it smashed me. Two years later I got a ticket for the last concert of the Spirit tour at Waldbuehne in Berlin. I know that a lot of fans see their nowadays live performances very critically, but for me, as I didn’t watch their concerts in the Nineties and didn’t have the studio versions of the songs in my ears - it was magic and it blew me totally away! And as before - Dave, Dave, Dave, so sexy, so energetic and charismatic. From that time I was somehow a fan and I watched the footage from the concert in Berlin again and again. And then I discovered your channel. Your love and passion for their music and your excellent expressions of your feelings about the band’s sound took me deeper into it. I started reading about them and watching your review about music for the masses. Bought the MFTM record and listened to it a lot. Bought Violator, Black Celebration, 101 and listened to it. Well, and watching your videos I noticed that you always mentioned the Devotional tour as their peak and as the high bar they raised. So I bought the Anton Corbin DVD of the Devotional tour and watched it on a beamer with proper sound system. Well, what can I say ? I cannot believe how good they were! This was just a higher level. I was so surprised how innovative, deep, somehow minimal, simple and ingenious at the same time they sounded. Their machine grooves were so mighty and fat. And at the same time they really got soul and sounded organic and human. Every tone at the rigth place and sounding classic and innovative and rough at the same time. Incredible. Well, in combination with Anton Corbijn’s stage it got such a cool and dark and artful style. And then Dave is bringing his overwhelming human element into this show. You can feel that he is totally into the music for every single second, being so unbelievable sexy, moving like a god or like a messiah preaching to the crowd. And so sweet and likable and vulnerable at the same time. Well, and of course his voice. He was singing it perfectly. But also the other guys : Martin and Alan soooo sexy and concentrated behind their synths. Alan so cool and concentrated and accurate playing the drums. Well, you said it, it’s synchronicity, it’s just unbelievable good ! Well, I watched Devotional 4 more times since then, alway dancing in my room with the hands in the air. Euphoria. And even having some tears in my eyes at the same time because it’s somehow overwhelming. For me all this is a big treasure. I became a DM fan and your channel is a big part in this. So thanks a lot for this, Vaughn, there is a lot to discover for me regarding the DM sound and your channel as well. I’m really grateful, you make it so good and sincere. With a lot of musical knowledge and feeling. And you are able to put into words. It’s excellent and somehow a kind of synchronicity as well. Salute!

Great video. An incredible collection of magically gifted musicians that gave us a distinctive sound. DM in the 80s and 90s were incredible with their unique sound, but is sadly now missing without Alan🚨. They had all the right opportunities all combined to allow them to develop. Martin and Alan made it happen, Dave gave it life. Leave the clapper there. I was mentally disfigured by them in the 80s, they were different in the right way, with a great presence. I'm so late to the party. I am finally getting a moment to sit down and watch your series. I'm so thrilled with this video! I fell in love with DM when I was 8, and first heard Stories of Old. I was hooked instantly! My mother's best friend's daughter, who was the cool teenager to my annoying 8yo tag-along, would sit with my head right next to her, trying to hear whatever she was listening to in her headphones. She was nice enough to realize how much the song caught me, and actually gave me her Cassette. I was done.. 38 years later, I am still addicted to their music. It just sits in my soul.

When I was at the Wherehouse when thousands came to see them at the Beverly Center and one of “us” said they were ahead of their time and all of us were at that same frequency.

For me, the secret to DM’s success is holistic. Take away any part and I don’t think you’d have something as successful. Everything plays a role, from their energetic starting days with Vince, to their “we’ll do it ourselves” spirit of ABF, to the Alan period, to the photographers and videographers they’ve worked with, to their comeback (which of course started with Ultra but for me really peaked with the Singles tour)... it all creates the mystique, the compelling story, and of course the musical experience we all love. I still enjoy following them (some albums better than others) but IMO they have never truly lost THEMSELVES. For me the pinnacle is the Violator era; the destructiveness of the SOFAD era knocks it down for me (I know others differ on that!). The “knockoff bands” lack the DM magic precisely because they were emulating DM, not being themselves. They may be good but it’s hard to get as passionate about them. Likewise had DM just said “we are going to be the British Kraftwerk,” we would not be talking about them this way.

I am so with you! Violator is the height of existence, the only album I have ever loved every single song on. When SOFAD came out, I listened to it a few times trying to "get it" and set aside all their music for decades. It broke my heart to hear them wallow in self-destruction in those songs. Everything before SOFAD seemed innocent and exploratory.

First time i heard them was the 101 concert... send my jaw to the floor. id never, as you put it so well.... never heard something like those guys, and never will.....I just find your channel.... It was December 1981. My best friend Paul (18) and I (17) were in HMV and we spotted 'Speak and Spell'. We bought each other the album for Christmas and have been an important part of who am I since. Actually had the chance to meet them in Tallinn at the Depeche Mode bar in 2001 at the start of their Exciter Tour.

Nice to watch this again in the build up to seeing them on this tour. I think there is more than just having talent. This is in my opinion very much Hegel’s philosophy in terms of product quality of surrounding. 60’s 70’s and 80’s kids education in UK was very much science and exploration based. It was that way until 2000’s. There is no surprise that their audience loved them as the kids were very much on their level. Having MG being an introvert and mindful of emotion took them to another level. I love them so much. I still listen to their music every single day. ❤

I love to hear you play DM songs on the piano! I caught onto DM in High School with Some Great Reward and have never looked back. It is sad to not have Alan's input/influence with the band but I agree with you that Martin is the architect and Alan was the engineer and we, the fans, got to enjoy the fruit of their labor. A broken frame was my entry point. I was 16yo advanced placement art student. Spent overnite hours in my basement doing my projects. Would hear Depeche on independent college radio stations. To this day its still one of my favorite albums.

I really got into Depeche Mode in my college years. Everything Counts and People are People were played a lot. I loved Dave's voice and the lyrics of their songs. I easily got hooked on them. Their music still stands over time and never gets old to me. I love listening to them out in the garden.

It's true, they're around for 40 years, but the fact is that we cherish DM until SOFAD, everything that came after that has that inertia feeling. My DM playlist may have 2 or 3 songs from the post-SOFAD era, but that's it. And Vaughn, no disrespect, but I think that the AW fan boy alert thing is getting a bit old, I guess we're all on the same page regarding Alan. Thx for the quality and passion seen on these videos.

Vaughn, you need to rig up an actual Alan Wilder fan boy alarm button in your studio so that when you hit it, the room lights actually dim and red LED strips light up along the walls and it plays the star trek sound effect you normally edit into the video :P

Depeche Mode. I first got there music by Watching MTV in the early 90’s. I knew they had been around a good few years from just can’t get enough & then… I got in to house, techno & drum & bass. I had my dance vinyl & rock music vinyl. I loved the Depeche Mode tracks Enjoy the Silence, Behind the Wheel & Personal Jesus so I bought “Violater”. I couldn’t put in either section so had their own section. Violator I loved & still do so I went from there. I then started to get the other albums & they are the only group that have been pretty much been a constant throughout life really. Now my daughter age 8 is well aware already who Depeche Mode are. They say you’ve gotta start them young! 🖤🥀🎹🎼

If I was Martin Gore I'd surprise Vaughn's by contacting him via zoom/facetime/skype etc! The guy has devoted himself to Depeche Mode for most of his life. He seems like a genuine, well-meaning guy. What I mean to say is I highly doubt he is one of those super fan creeps that have a sinister obsession. Imagine how good you'd feel, as a wealthy and globally successful artist, to give Vaughn a deserved interview. He must be aware of him! Maybe he is so detached from reality that it would never occur to him. What a beautiful gesture it would be. Keep up the great work Vaughn. You are educating established as well as new fans to the wonderful career of Depeche Mode.

Thank you Vaughn for your awesome content concerning Depeche Mode and other interesting stuff. I almost lost contact to Depeche Mode, when the album Exxciter came out. It is no more that easy to listen and enjoy Depeche Mode like it was in the 80s. A kid of the 80s it was always a little bit special to listen to Depeche. In small village where I grew up with 3000 inhabitants it was more then cool to be a Depeche Devotie. In die end I have bought all the other albums after Exciter. But it was never the same like in the 80s. As time goes by people are basicly the same. Black Celebration, yes my alltime favorite Depeche Album. Some great reward my fist album that I owned 1984. I could listen to this from the beginning to the end without skipping a song. So my fond memories to this period of my life will still be in my heart. Keep up the good work. Stay safe. Stay healthy. i first heard them on a Friday or Saturday night on UC Davis's Pirate radio in the early 80s, been a fan ever since. Many many people could tell the story of their lives through the discography of this group. while many groups make music that people enjoy, DM makes music that the very core of an individual resonates with.

1986 was when I got into DM and the Cure. Got to see them play expo 86 as well as seeing aha at expo. My mum had died the year before and that was it for me the start of my dark progression.

Great music. Got into them after a friend mentioned them in 1985.and I saw 3 cassettes on special in local music shop: Broken Frame, Some Great Reward, Construction Time Again

I’ve loved them since New Life and always recorded their TOTP performances and wherever they were on, every album I brought seemed to build on the last, with new equipment DM broke the moulds of convention, with lyrics to match. I always felt that DM were my band and no one else’s, do you know what I mean, they weren’t mainstream and that was their appeal, I didn’t want everybody to know the album tracks. I influenced all my friends into DM because I was always playing them. The concerts were something else seeing all the like minded people was great, we all had our own DM experience. I think they peaked with SOFAD and was lucky enough to see it twice. And then AW left, I think it knocked DM back for a couple of years but Ultra is one of my favourite albums, however subsequent albums have not shined for me, the occasional song, though I’m still happy they are still going but find them a different animal now.

Shake the disease is so amazing. Depeche Mode are one of the greatest bands to ever exist, I'm so thankful to have been exposed to them at a very young age. My mom gave me the cassette of Violator for Christmas when I was 8 years old in 91 and it changed my life

As you well indicated Vaughn, the songs of Martin Gore are the core and essence of Depeche Mode. If you listen to both cover albums made by Martin, both Counterfeit albums, you can see how he pampers the songs he chose. He loves music and show us how to love music and understand the world we live in and life in general. There are a lot of sad times in which Martin's sounds gave us hope and understanding.

Yep they definitely have oodles of that je ne sais quoi factor going on one could say...but nah ...lets be real...no head in the clouds ...DM is perfect imperfectionism...ive always been a perfectionist and drawn to quality ...but Marty while many may say his writing is about the human condition which is imperfect and the goreisms are an expression of that ...Alan elevated that instead of muffling it...and you Vaughn are a most eloquent megaphone spreading the DM gospel for us devotees and others like a missionary and I thank you for it because its from the heart😀😍😍😍

The 1st time I heard DM it was "just cant' get enough" on the radio in the bus from high school, on my Aiwa "walkman + FM", the one you have to screw an aerial on the side in order to get some signal, but what mades me crazy was "Master & Servants" on SGW, the 1 st CD I bought.

Actually i got my first walkman for christmas at the age of 12. Still couldnt find out how happened, but inside the box in the walkman there was a DM casette in it. Immediately fell in love with the band :) The album Violator is simply a masterpiece. So happy that they came to Hungary twice about 10 years ago (after Playing the Angel) and could watch them live.

It almost ended tragically back in year 1995 when AW left the group, the trio core of DM stick together n continue their unknown journey. Wat a story to tell... N I witnessed all of it.
