Looks like a fun little build. It's been so long since I even touched a C64 that I didn't recall it's disk drive being special.

That era time period didn't have a standard for disk formatting, so every company made their own, which was only readable in their computers.

I recently had a memory awaken that the ECS K7S5A was my first scratch built system. It's nice to see one in use here. It was a good board back then. I'm starting to wish I had bought it at the recycling place when I saw it 😅

The computer shop I worked at back then sold tons of them and the K7VZA before that. Felt like every other machine was powered by one. Happy to be able to keep this one running.

I remember the surprise when as a kid I saw for the first time a real floppy, it was I think 2002 and back then I only knew as floppy the 3.5 "(which in any case were already disappearing from circulation), in fact until then I did not understand what exactly was "floppy" in them and I did not understand why they were called like that.

They're so flimsy and flexible, I often wonder how any of them have survived this long. Even the well cared for ones won't live forever.

I have similar motherboard ECS K7S6A rev1.0 with SIS 745 (yours SIS 735). Which SIS AGP (GART) driver version you used on Win98SE? 1.21 , 1.19A , 1.17E , 1.17 , 1.16A , other? I had “Windows protection error” problem with 1.21. I might try those others later.
@PNPRetro2 жыл бұрын
I don't recall off the top of my head... it most likely wasn't the latest version, since I snagged it from the ECS website. I'm doing some work in the studio, but I'll try and get it hooked back up this week and pull the version for you! The version number on the manufacturers site doesn't actually correspond to the driver version.

What was the issue with the 5.25" floppy drive? I've never worked with those, so the reason given in the video went a little "whoosh" over my head :(
@Jay-ik1pt2 жыл бұрын
Keyed vs Non-Keyed. 5.25" is before my time so I can't give you the exact implications of *why* there was (at least) two different cabling systems, but: The card-edge connector (the gold fingers and protruding section of circuit board on the drive) that the cable slots onto is either keyed (has a notch cut out of the circuit board and a matching blocked section on the cable connector) or non-keyed (no notched section, won't allow a keyed cable to plug on - the blocked off section physically prevents it from fitting). In his case the first drive he tried was non-keyed (no notch) and the cable was keyed (blocked off section on the connector), so he physically couldn't plug it in. If you go back and watch that section you can see how the two drives he shows differ in that the one on the right has a slot cut into the card edge. The two different cable systems may be related to the different 40-track and 80-track drive types that exist, or it may be a proprietary controller specification, or something else entirely. Heck, it might even be just that the keyed system was designed later to prevent the connector from being plugged in upside down. You'd need to do some google-fu or else have a greybeard or someone more deeply involved with retrotech than me to explain that part.
@PNPRetro2 жыл бұрын
What an amazingly well written out explanation. By the time I was old enough to start building machines, the 5 1/4 drive was more of a legacy part than a standard equipped. So, I don't have a good answer for when the key was introduced. But very likely at least part of its function was to prevent being plugged in upside down. Thanks for chiming in, Jay!
