I drove a 71 Nova with a 4k converter, 4.10 gears, and a spool to work every day for years. What's "streetable" is simply a matter of what you're willing to put up with. The stall was barely noticeable with tall gears, and the only downside to a spool is the tires chirping around tight turns. It didn't bother me at all.

Youll hardly notice any difference except cruise rpm and WOT Log onto Wallace racing calculators they can do the math for you. This was my everyday work car. It seemed to wear out front tires as fast or faster than the rear because it would push the front end, sliding the tires a bit in a tight turn, especially in a parking lot or going around a restaurant like Sonic. Yeah the rear tires made noise too as it would spin the inside tire and slide the outside tire. The street racers that knew what that meant, knew it was ready to get down to business. I ran it at 11:50's @ 107 in the quarter a few time but more of a street toy I started out with a '67 Olds 330 pushing a little over 400 HP with the 308 duration automatic grind camshaft and 4 speed with Hurst Ram 4 inline shifter kicking myself in the ass for selling that to soon but I was busting parts almost lost a rear wheel sheared off a few blots a couple times but then I blame the times with those oval washer multi-fit back then dropped a few driveshafts as well as destroying a few 10 bolt rear ends non- posi ... But your ride is sweet there's a shop in Port Colborne Ontario Canada that is a Mopar muscle dealer he has a few cars there that he picks up and puts out for sale driving by they look sweetie but I don't know how good his body work is I have see one years ago the was acid dipped but I don't know if he still does it or not anymore that was in the late '70's it was eighter a Superbird or Daytona I seen an old Super Bee body out there that the guy down the street had then he sold it to someone but I noticed the dealership has it now been sitting there for a few years now I guess the last person who had it changed the color to purple from blue it had 383 4-gear in it as well ...

Love my Dakota RT on 3.90s but the 46RH (3 WIRE) With overdrive (27٪ overdrive) is an absolute blessing. The 46re is 8 wire plug. Those solenoids tend to be a problem. If I didn't have a rare car cut the tunnel save the cut out parts to weld back in . My RT Has a over the counter 2300 from mopar. The performance computer works great. Swaped it out and back in at the track .it was worth .6ths and the 390s were worth over .5ths than 3.55s in another dodge pick up. My friend drives a '71 Pro Street Z28 Camaro. The car is tubbed with 14"X32" out back. He runs a blown BBC with a 5000 stall converter. He wanted to make a test run so he drove down the hill to a freeway ramp and made a pass on a Sunday morning. On the way home, driving up the hill, as he pulled into his driveway when his trans gave up the ghost. The 5000 stall overheated the trans. Now he runs a 3000 stall converter. As for a spool, we'd met in a BofA parking lot after midnight. The tight turns in the parking lot, you can hear the cars with a spool when one of their tires chirp. The chirping is from an axle untwisting because of the spool. Cars with hardened axles won't twist so the outside tire in a sharp turn will squawk in the turn. A stock axle will twist only so many times before snapping.
@Duster_Garage Жыл бұрын
5000 rpm stall is really getting up there. You need a big external trans cooler and deep aluminum pan to run on the street. And cross your fingers.
@Luke-jw6zn Жыл бұрын
That's not what the chirping is, the axle is not twisting .
@davidkeeton67162 күн бұрын
You must be kidding or you are, well, silly. The chirping is the inside tire spinning and the outside tire dragging along not spinning or rolling as fast as it needs to, to cover the distance that it is traveling. The outside tire has to cover more distance around a corner compared to the distance that the inside tire travels.

High stall converter and 4:10’s are appropriate with the 340(I’m assuming it’s a 340). I had a 69 Cutlass 455 with a 3k stall and 3:73 gears Hurst dual gate. You couldn’t leave in 1st because it would just sit and melt the tires off so a quick shift to 2nd helped. Have you considered a manual valve body trans?
@Duster_Garage Жыл бұрын
The valve body I have in that trans is basically a forward pattern manual shift. I modified it with a Trans Go stage 2 kit. It actually works pretty good.

I ran a 71 Duster 340 with a 3500 Turbo Action converter and manual valve body, with 4.30 gears on the street as a daily driver for a couple of years in the mid-90's. Can you run something like that on the street, sure... but if you take it on the highway you will be doing 4,000 RPM's just to keep up with traffic, and if you have power steering, as I did, it would boil out the fluid on longer highway trips. My car even had the factory power steering cooler, made no difference, the PS fluid would boil on longer highway trips and puke all over the place. A manual steering box would fix that issue. I had a love hate relationship with the high stall converter, on the one hand it sucked how much it slipped at low speeds, on the other hand it was great when you punched it as the engine would immediately scream and the car would go sideways. In the early 90's I also ran a welded differential on a 300ZX turbo street race car I had, which is basically the same as running a spool. In all honesty it never bothered me much, it would chirp the tires on tight turns, but I never saw any damage to the tires because of it. To me a spool or a welded diff is really the least bothersome of all these things, the welded diff never bothered me much.
@Duster_Garage2 жыл бұрын
I would have to say, I would not want to drive my Duster daily. I never know about the p/s fluid boiling. Then again I have manual steering on that car. Good to know.
@72442conv2 жыл бұрын
@@Duster_Garage From where I lived to my business was only a couple of miles of light to light traffic, so the converter and 4.30 gears were not an issue as the car would never really go over 40 MPH. I had other vehicles for when I took longer trips. For me, in my specific situation it worked, but if that was my only vehicle, it would really suck... The 4.30 gears would have to go for 3.55 or 3.23's. I could live with the converter and manual valve body, but not the 4.30's.

I have run slicks on the street but just to run a race, and when I am back home I immediately remove them. Unless you live in the desert, slicks and rain do not mix. Even a small amount of rain will have you hydroplaning into a ditch or a tree. Also slicks have no real puncture resistance, any road debris can easily puncture a slick. On top of the fact that when you run them on the street they will not last at all. They are also not DOT approved and a cop can certainly ticket you, and if he really does not like you, he can tow your vehicle. Get some DOT drag radials for the street, they are much safer, although they still suck in the rain, if you go very slow when it rains you should survive, LOL
@CashMopar Жыл бұрын
Are those tires the drag radials? They look like normal tires.
