I’m not the only one to think or express this, but Mache Dich is the most transcendently beautiful section in the most sublime long work of Western Music, quite possibly of all art. Only Michelangelo’s “Moses” for the tomb of Pope Julius, Pericles Funeral Oration and the Parthenon Marbles share company with Bach’s Matthau-Passion.

Maybe not traditional, neither is the orchestra, but the fullness of the sound in his voice is absolutely incredible
@donnrutkoff9225 жыл бұрын
Richter the magician. What richness. He looks like he is just coasting but he must be Bach's great great great grandson. His orchestras are what Maria Callas David Oistrakh are. Berry ain't too shabby either. Different from Fischer Dieskau. I had the rare honor to perform the Passion, in Berlin, in 1988. Tears flowing.

Brilliant, absolutely brilliant music. I wonder if there will ever be a musical genius like Bach again...
It’s a lovely warm full voice. “Make yourself pure, my heart. I want to bury Jesus myself”. I struggle with the translation. Bach’s musical expression often exposes deeper meaning than the text.

Karl Richter was a genius. He had very distinctive movements, like the way he points at people and the way he moved his head and body. If you saw a motion captured stick figure, you would recognize him. Walter Berry - a perfect voice and a perfect peformance. So beautiful. Thanks very much!

I agree, he will always remain a role model for all baritones and basses. He was a fantastic and very versatile artist.
It translates thusly (according to the Oratorio Anthology I am referencing): "Make you, my heart, pure, I will Jesus in myself entomb, then he shall henceforth in me for eternity his sweet rest have. World, go out, allow Jesus in!" I hope that helps! It truly is a beautiful piece.
@RB-pi9ls3 жыл бұрын
A fine translation
@spoffspoffington2403 жыл бұрын
A bit literal actually, with the awkward German word-order. And no-one English would say "thusly" instead of thus. Make, thou, my heart pure. I will entomb Jesus in my heart. Henceforth He shall have His sweet rest in me for eternity World go out, let Jesus in.

In English: Make thyself clean, my heart; I will myself entomb Jesus; For he shall henceforth in me; forever and ever take his sweet rest; World, begone! let Jesus in! I am not even religious but this piece brings tears to my eyes, it is like the music of Bach is caressing the words. The orchestra sound is not good here but the bass is terrific!

Karl Richter, der Unvergleichliche! Bach pur.

Since I first listened to this 40ish years back, I have not even been interested in listening to other versions. I can't even finish other versions without coming back to this one like after 2 minutes the most. Maybe have not listened to Dieskau's, but if I did & can't remember...
@nadiaharpist Жыл бұрын
Same. Matthias Goerne's version is a close second for me, but this is my favorite. Most versions are too fast and don't have anywhere near the warmth and lyricism of this one.
@ohmy565018 күн бұрын
(still me, sorry. just to say I've just heard a most beautiful Dieskau's version also under Karl Richter, probably from the 1950s or 60s. only now I realize the main difference to my ears & sensibility is that Berry is a bass whose voice plainly enchants me. Dieskau, here especially, also enchants me but very very differently, being a baritone but more than that.)

If your computer keyboard does not have the letter "ß", you can produce it by holding down the "Alt" key and then typing the number 0223 on the right hand side Numpad. (At least on a Windows PC. -- Not sure about Linux and Mac.) But the letter "capital B" is a completely different letter (and sound) than the letter "ß" in the German language… :-) ("ß" is pronounced like the English "s", while the German "s" sounds more like an English "z". And the German "z" would be equivalent to an English "ts"... Like in Tsunami.)
