I think given the weight and velocity differences between the (2) rounds it's no surprise that the .44mag penetrated deeper . I know that Underwood makes hardcast ammo for both of these cartridges that's comparable in both weight & velocity . I've got revolvers in both calibers but personally I like the .41mag a little better . I think it's equally as effective as the .44mag if you use the right ammo , and it's definitely more manageable . Great video , looking forward to the next one !

Winchester makes a 240 gr load in 41 Mag, so you can really have an equal comparison.

You really need to use ammo from the same company to get a good test. There are hotter 41 loads on the market.

I handload .41 a lot hotter than that Also I have a Ruger .41 Hunter model which has a cyl that's about 1/10" longer than SAAMI spec length for the .41 so it's possible to increase case capacity by a few grains. 1500 FPS is very possible with 180 gr bullets. - A .44 mag can do better because of even more case capacity, but I like the .41 and that's why I have it.

Pretty weak 41mag loading, I can get 1560 fps from a 210gr XTP-HP from a 6.5" Ruger New Model Blackhawk. Good 41mag ammo is out there and 22.7 gr of H-110 behind a 210gr gr XTP-HP gets right at 1500fps. A 265gr Hard cast LNFN is fairly easy to get 1400fps , just saying. Good job testing though 👏

Colt runs slower velocities in their barrels than the equivalent length Ruger or S&W for whatever reason. At least that is historical. Not sure if their new Colt offerings are different than they used to be.

Those both did well for expanding bullets from standard shelf ammo. Both are more than enough for most chores when using Hardcast SWC bullets with higher sectional density. Let’s say a 300 grain for the 44 mag and a 230 grain for the 41 magnum. It would be cool to see this test done again with underwood hard cast for both.

That weight is what aids penetration. So the heavier load in the 44 magnum penetrated deeper.

i see this comparison to be like the 9 to 40. for most scenarios they are mostly comparable in effectiveness. but when things start to become less 'normal' is where the 44 can have a more noticeable advantage

I'll say up front that if you don't reload your own ammunition, buy the 44 magnum. I'm a dedicated reloader and enjoy the process of reloading. 22tcm9r, 38 spc, 9mm, 10mm, 45acp, 45 colt, 454 casull, and my absolute favorite the 41 magnum. It really shines when properly reloaded in a strong revolver, such as a Ruger New Model Blackhawk. I will also add that the 45 colt in a strong revolver will put both the 41 & 44 to shame with less maximum pressure and very heavy bullets. Also, there are more rifle cartridges than I want to list from 6.5 Grendel to 45-120 Sharp's.

Nice looking revolvers. The.10mm is reputed as having near.41 magnum performance. You can’t go wrong with either(as long as you have a handgun that meets your needs).

My opinion...the .44 mag would have been created anyway. People love to go further with anything. I.E. the Cadillac V8; 472 cubic inch was bigger than everyone else, but they just HAD to make a 500.😮

Sectional densities between these two loads: .41 Rem mag, 210gr: .178 .44 Rem mag, 240gr: .186 Marginal differences between them, but favoring the .44 magnum. The rest is down to velocity.

I really liked both this video and the .357/.44 magnum one. Would it be possible for to test 9mm 124gr JSP in LVL as well? As a side note, in my video about shotgun slugs for bears I pointed out that a 12 gauge sabot that penetrates through and exits a grizzly with a quartering away shot will also stop in the third one gallon water jug. There has also been at least one elephant killed with a .41 magnum (side brain shot). I mentioned that in one of my African game videos. Those LVL boards are really tough. You stated that jacketed soft points are tough and that's not quite true. They just don't have a lot of expansion which gives them more penetration than a JHP. They're made of soft lead like many other bullets but are not as weakened as JHPs are.

Sectional Density between both are close, so I think the 41 would have done better with fastet ammo. Remington is usually a mid powet load, so if you were getting around 1350 for the 41, and over 1500 for the 44, that explains it. Get some 210 41 up to 1500 and I will bet the farm it will perform at least as good as the 44 mag.

Interesting well done test! Some tests results allegedly reveal that the 41 magnum round to have better trajectory and even better penetration. It depends on several factors especially with the ammo. Which caliber would you prefer for hunting or wilderness defense? Years ago the former owner for Foggy Mountain Black Bear Hunting Outfitters Wayne Boscowitz, (RIP) favorite handgun round for bears was the 41 magnum.

Do the same test at distance. 41 mag will retain more energy due to better bullet coefficient. So at distance 41 wins. I have both calibers.

Bro, use the same ammo brand or don’t make videos. It’s so misleading 41 magnum on average has a way higher velocity than 44 magnum. You’re using high velocity 44 magnum and low velocity 41 magnum obviously the heavier bullet that’s also moving faster does more damage. This is a dumb video.
