As a senior you must control your emotions and not engage with closed fists. Keep open hands up in a non threatening manner to gauge a safe distance. If they cross the check point use the element of surprise to strike first the closest soft points with open hands. Hit high and low to inflict pain and disorientation before you get stuck. You win if you avoid the conflict and go home.

You present the information perfectly, I'm a 68 yr old vet, biker, martial arts,I have learned over the yrs to glean techniques that my body can accommodate. I will take the high road when possible, but I am committed if forced in violence it should be overwhelming violence. I figure I can deal with a issue up to about 1.5-2 min before my back starts having issues. Enjoy your channel

Excellent work, the hammer fist took time for me to get used too but now it’s one of my favorites. You are correct after awhile you build muscle memory and then the work out becomes much more efficient. Where l grew up we fought all the time, Hint, our graffiti has graffiti, l am out now.

yep boxing tecniques (ive done it), the time you spend on this is in my view the most effective time you will ever spend for learning self defense, so you have these basic self defense tools with you everywhere and are able to inflict damage. its quick to learn and takes little time to master compared to for example BJJ. Edit: im going to do work on my hammerstrikes myself, theres some tecnique here i still need to learn which i picked up from urban combatives where you can punch REALLY hard (knockout strikes), because with hammerstrikes you remove the risk of breaking your hand

I did boxing and karate when I was younger. Now I'm 55, try to stay calm, but sometimes not very good in it. What ever, I think you have to use a heavybag to understand reach, footwork and powerdelivery. Also you should do push ups with the 2 knuckles you mentioned on hard underground.

we got more room here so ill soon have a place for a heavy bag, i already bought one, an angeled heavy bag for more angles to hit and a speed ball, those are what id recomend for a full package bag workout

Boxing is 50% footwork, breaking techniques include twisting the hips, lining up the hand and arm bones, toughening the knuckles, edge, and palms. One finger strikes, need extra toughening, and closer trim on the nails. I spend time outside, punching the stucco covered pillars. I like the speedbag blindfolded. Bruce's punches, used the last three knuckles, no index knuckle, a Wing Chun style. Used for lightening fast plummels. I hold a board stack straight out, make a tight karate fist, lock it under my shoulder, focus on the surface, of the boards, throw my hips, then the punch, I just kiss the surface, but focused all the energy, past that point, clear through the stack. And retrieved the fist, as quickly as it was thrown, that's supposed to increase your speed. Making sure your bones are in proper allingment, each time. Repeatedly, doing it correctly, for over 6 or 7 hundred times, increases acetylcholine, around the nerve synapses, increased conductivity, lowers the overall time, increasing both speed and power. It's referred to as muscle memory. The single finger strikes, have targets like the eyes, muscles, nerves, and between the 5th and 6th ribs, just left of their sternum, on their exhale.

Excellent video Daniel! Ken & Frank Shamrock, Bas Rooten were able to deliver devastating open handed blows which took quite a few of their opponent's literally out of those fights. Open hand strikes are pretty underestimated but highly effective! I've been fortunate enough to have had a few years (amateur) of boxing experience in Miami's Golden many MANY moons ago and still, watching your video and listening to your instructions is not only spot on, but priceless too! You're very pricise with your directions which eliminates the need for second guessing. Again man, excellent video!!!

Hand condition is very important and you can hit with the bottom three knuckles because I have learned to in Wing Chun and the first two knuckles is very important also as used in Karate training and learning what part of the hand works best on each part of the body is important but those knuckle push up and hitting a 40lbs or 70lbs heavy bag is the best training aid and feed back ,Bob is good also. 😊

Good points, especially about punching through. Reminds me of breaking boards. Do not overcommit with the right. If you put everything behind it and miss, you lose balance or are vulnerable to a hook. Stance is critical for balance and movement. Keep hands up. It is not easy that easy to be hit, even when on the ground. Enjoyed this.

That's one thing I realised pretty quickly when I got into self defence that putting up your dukes and hoping to go toe to toe with your opponent like it's a boxing match is probably one of the worst ways to approach a potential altercation with an attacker.

In my 30s, i was in GREAT SHAPE...but i got into a bad fight, and was able to land a devastating left to the bad guy...being a southpaw has advantages....unfortunately, he and i both went to the hospital. Proximity negates skill.. (Carlos Rey "Chuck" Norris) In other words, the closer you are fighting with someone, the less skill they need to strike you. I practice the heavy bag with a jump rope on the floor, circling the bag. My feet can't cross the rope. As I land solid strikes from a distance, I move the rope back a half inch or so. This increases my range. Then I do close range strikes that includes elbows. Believe it or not, in my hometown in Texas, hitting someone with a closed fist was a crime. Another reason for open handed strikes. The body is less mobile and larger of a target than the head. For power, I eat 7 grams of creatine a day, along with plenty of protein. Also, kettle bell swings and slam ball. I do slam balls at different angles into the heavy bag. Mine is hard, not easy to grip, so strengthens the forearms too. I never use wrist wraps, not even on fight night at the dojo. I hit the bag and wall mounted tires, bare handed. Knuckle push-ups helps with wrist strength and keeping the wrist straight. I try to watch out for the hard spots on the bag though. lol Those hurt right up to the jawbone. lol Inside knife hand and inside hammer fist: I've only knocked out two people in my life, once with an inside hammer fist to the head. I torque the body and uncoil like a spring. The other time was a spinning back fist. Again, torqued up. I got disqualified for knocking the dude out at a Karate tournament (as I should have) Correction, I have wrapped up an injured wrist or hand before. Getting plenty of the right nutrition is important in avoiding injuries. Eat to make the bones and joints strong.

Hello again, Mr. Handsome. I've found that the two first knuckles (not including the rest of the finger) known as Seiken in Japanese, aligned with the wrist is very effective at breaking cheekbones. The small area seems to do a lot of damage. As you mention, Bas Rutten recommending the palm strike is a great technique to the jaw behind the ear. Twisting the hips as you deliver for maximum impact. Also keep the elbow slightly bent instead of straight out, too. Luckily I've not gotten into many fights. But, when I was attacked one time, the above fist technique gave me time to escape the scene. Yeah, I can also run fast! 😉

In Jack Dempsey's book, "Championship Fighting" he refers to boxing as a "martial art". He also advocated throwing a lead jab with a squared fist (like Bruce Lee's Jun Fan Kung Fu, or wing chun kung fu), on a non telegraphed linear trajectory with a sudden dropping (aka "level change") of your forward stepping foot, and snapping the wrist to hit with the last three knuckles. He referred to this as a "lead jolt" instead of a lead jab because he believed the typical boxing jab lacked power and telegraphed as the wrist turned and elbow rose up. His "lead jolt" was designed to do damage compared to the typical jab found in boxing, kickboxing, and muay Thai which functions more to gauge distance or to set up the cross. The strikes to the side of the neck are effective. I once got punched on the side of the neck during sparring and not even. that hard with 16 oz gloves and I was surprised that I momentarily got light headed possibly from the carotid artery being disrupted.

Try NOT to use knives in street fights bcse believe it ot not, The Police will often choose to take the side of the street punk who attacked you IF YOU USE A KNIFE. Better join a Karate class (choose the Shotokan style bcse they focus on speed instead of on power like other Karate styles, which can be tiring for seniors)

Thanks for the video. If I'm just doing an eye rake to distract someone before I throw a punch or elbow, is it really necessary to put the whole body into the eye rake? I realize that there is value to driving the heel of my hand into the attacker's lips to cause a little pain, but I've often thought that the real value of an eye rake is to make the attacker close his eyes for a moment. My hope is that I'll have something with real power hitting the attacker as he's trying to get his vision again. I can imagine just pulling down the bill of cap and then trying to land my power strike in that moment of blindness. If I have time to get close, do you think I'd be better off throwing an elbow instead of a punch? I don't train much. I just don't have much energy since I became sick. When I can work a heavy bag, I like to work elbows. I've always felt that if I can get my right elbow above an attacker's left arm, there's no real block for a right elbow strike. Does that make sense? I try to do a few squats and lunges. Do you see those as useful for building powerful strikes?

Do not ever ever punch in a street fight it is very easy to hit a place where there is something that is gonna hurt your hands. Use your hands to grabe hold get out of the way Palm strikes face slaps can hurt a lot. Fingers strikes Work very well to the ribes. I am only gonna enter with punchs if i know i can enter into your guard Other way no. To get your hands strong use bo staff trainning it gives you resistance speed and power. To lose sensibility hit your body with a stick over time you get a lot of resistance to hits
