Without a full flow oil filter all the contaminants will sit in the bottom of your sump and create a thick sludge over time. As you don’t have an oil filter the engine needs a non detergent oil to ensure that any particulates are not held in suspension but allowed to settle out. I have a JP3 which needs the same type of oil and I use morris SAE30 which is a straight mineral oil. The danger of using a detergent multi grade is that all the suspended material is passed through your oil ways and could clog these up leading to oil starvation of whichever bearing that feeds. I would check with the oil supplier if what you have used is classed as a detergent type oil. It’s also worth noting that your tappers on the head could do with a check for correct gap setting at each service.
@keithduffy446211 ай бұрын
As mentiond earlier, an oil company assured me that that particular oil is suitable. The video was precede and we did discus tappets, which on such a lightly loaded engine can can be judged very roughly by sound as to whether they need adjusting. To adjust them at every 100 hour service intrval would be absurd.

Given the state of the fuel filter you should have the fuel cleaning guy that was at Project 58 pay Sloe Patrol a house call. The 15w/40 was a surprise. I've seen so many Lister YT'ers using Golden SAE 30 in theirs.
@keithduffy446211 ай бұрын
SAE30 was the reccomended oil before multigrade was developed. In days of yor oils wererated30 winter and 40 winter. The oil company assured me that whereas they supply 30 grade if you want it 20/40 covered a greater range.

really good vlog! Kieth knows his stuff. Interesting to note that all of the small diesels seem to have a type of finger pump to clear air from the system. I've found them on everyone from the smallest graveley to the large cummings engines. the fuel pump on a unimog engine had a small hand piston type. sorry I'll ramble on. love the small engines and the lister and veaters are right in my fav list

Old fuel injection mechanic here and I've done a lot of work on Listers. Having seen the fuel filter and believe me, I've seen worse, but not by much, your lift pump is going to be acting as a reservoir for crap now. It looks like it is an old ac type pump so it's quite easy to clean out. It has a top cover on it like a little bell housing, which is held in place by a 3/8" bolt if memory serves. It is quite easy to take that cover off and you will see a lot of rubbish built up in the corners of the pump housing. Scrape this out taking care not to damage the little round valves that you will be able to see with the cover off. It will obviously be easier to do this if you the the lift pump off the engine block, but it looks like you could do it in position. You don't have to do this now as the fuel filter should catch any rubbish that breaks loose... perhaps a job to be done at thew next engine service. Good luck.

I’m a bit precious about engine oils, sadly. I’d have to run two or three oil changes through that engine over a week or two to flush out the inches of sludge no doubt sitting on the bottom. No oil filter either, yikes! Stuff of nightmares for me.

Wow all that garbage in the fuel filter. I know he told you that a fuel tank check is in the cards. I know this is probably not in your thoughts. But I changed out my fuel filter by removing the factory set up. Put a racor clear bottom filter with water drain in a more accessible spot. Which also allows me to see it clearly everytime I do an engine check. Just a thought!!

Clean the fuel tank and add an additional high flow filter on the outlet; and use diesel bug treatment. Your oil change interval is likely to be 50 hours run time as is typical with such rudimentary non filtered engines and the natural predisposition is for far too extended hours. Keep fuel tank full over winter to reduce condensation from the tank "breathing" in moisture laden air. Probably worst fuel fitter contamination I have ever seen; but then I have only changed a few hundred to date. As a last resort you could always read the "destructions". (neglected instructions)

The service interval on an SR2 is 100 hours. the muck in the tank was examined and found to be rust from the fuel tank

You know it makes me laugh how many times i get told im wrong by "experts" for using off brand oil in my lister and told its a bodge for paying a quarter of the price, and when it holds 15 liters the cost is considerable. Oil is made to a standard. I also use Lucas engine honey. When i got my boat the fuel filter was similar to yours, but i have the added poshness of an oil filter.
@keithduffy446211 ай бұрын
James, In showig the video you have edited 3+ hour lesson into 20 minutes,. In fairness you said in yor intro that you were showing an oil change, but it has left me open to a lot of flak for not covering some aspects which we of course covered. Your folowers didn't for instance see the boring bit at the beggining where I showed you photogaphs of what lay behind access panels, injectors, injector pumps crankcase etc. They must also have wondered why I was kicking the engine over when you tried to use the lift pump, which was on the cam, so had to be turned one revolution. If any of your folloers have questions, I will of course answer them.

From memory, the Lister SR range from the seventies used straight 10 oil in winter or 20 in summer. Use of multigrade makes them difficult to start by hand. Straight grade oil was hard to get back then, probably impossible today. If it was my boat, looking at the state of the filter I would clean out the fuel tank or at least fit a larger primary filter with a water trap. Save the expense of injector/pump overhauls.

To be honest that was a very rudimentary service. More to an engine service than changing oil and filters, the sort of thing a dodgy second hand car dealer describes as a full service. How about the valve clearances that should be adjusted on engines of that vintage, the coarse filter in the lift pump was not cleaned. You say the cost was £200? Supposing he spent £80 on oil and filters etc that equates to possibly £60 per hour? No mention of gearbox oil check or change.
