I’ve always bussed hard left and right for the respective tracks because the first 4 track I got didn’t have the direct feature. It’s become so second nature that’s it’s just one of those things that I do unconsciously almost every time before I press record. I actually got a Marantz 4 track that I’ll to record in the near future that has the direct feature and I’m sure I’ll never ever use it lmao. Input/bussing signal for life. Just gotta make sure all the other tracks are either on cue or off because if they’re left on tape/mix you get added unnecessary noise.

Great follow up to mega tutorial. Routing always seems simple in theory but for some reason can become mind bending in practice, videos like this always help consolidate the understanding of a "very straight forward thing". Now back to setting up my patchbay for the 5th time.

LOL thanks, Paddy! I'm glad it was a helpful video. This was always such a confusing point to me, I'm glad this will help clarify the concept for you and others 😎👍

Nice video Mike so nice to see you are keeping up with the analogue vibe. I recently restored a little gem, it was a Fostex X-15 four track. For a 37 year old machine it was absolutely amazing. I was really sad to see it go to it's new owner, but I have no doubt that he'll just love it as much as I loved working on it. Kind regards. Paul.

Very cool, Paul! I've always wanted to try one of the Fostex units but I was never able to get my hands on one. Maybe one of these days. Are they similar to the Tascam units? Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the video!

Hi Mike . Another grate video. I can imagine busing be a good way to record a band or a group live. I only seem to use the bus switch when bouncing 3 tracks on to track 4. And when I do this I add another instrument throw channel 5-6.
@spooktasticaparanormal4 жыл бұрын
@@424Recording The Fostex X-15 is one of the more modest 4 track recorders but it still has a great sound quality to it and Dolby C. It also adopts the same tape transport as the Tascam Porta One Two and 05, also the 07.

That's awesome, James. That's a good way to do it. I've been meaning to make a video about recording a band live... maybe once things chill out with the pandemic. Thanks for watching!

Great Video! Really appreciate your effort. I always learn something new when I watch your stuff. Thank u ! I just came back from a drum recording session I did on my 4 track using type iii (!) ferrochrome tape. Found it at my dads place and thought I give it a try. The difference to type ii was - well- not really noticeable (at least for my - feedback-destroyed ears haha) would be interesting to someday get your opinion on different tapes types :) keep doing what you do man ! Great stuff !
@424Recording4 жыл бұрын
Thanks, DoctorDoctor. This means a lot to me; I appreciate you saying that. Oh, cool, re: type iii. That would be cool to do a video on the different types and recording to them and seeing what they sounds like. I have one metal tape (iv) and some type i's. I just need to grab one of those iii's and get to work. Cool idea btw! I'll add it to the list! Cheers and thanks for watching!

Hey mike, really love your channel! I have a question.. (and sorry for my english) recently got my first 4 track, a 424 mark I! And i have a problem, sometimes when i record in one track and then playback, the volume goes up and down slightly in some sections.. do you know how can i fix that? Cheers
@424Recording4 жыл бұрын
I would say try a different tape and/or clean the heads. These seem to be the two biggest solutions to a lot of 4-track problems. Try those out and let me know how it goes. My guess is that it's the tape (though dirty heads could cause issues with recording as well).

@@424Recording thanks mike! i will try it, if i use a metal type iv cassette it can damaged the heads or causes any problem?

When you recorded the drum loop which input did you use on back? I have a few Yamaha keyboards I wanna record and haven't figured out which input is best.
@424Recording4 жыл бұрын
Hi Faul, I wound up using the 1/4" in for track 1 on the 424. The Digitakt has 1/4" outs so I used a standard instrument cable. If the keyboards are stereo, you can use two 1/4" ins or the 7/8 input if you have a mkiii. Cheers!

Can someone please help me..... Say I record on track one, Then I route track 3 to track one and I want to record on top of what I previously recorded read it I can't figure out you're out how to hear what's on track 1 at 1 and also record on track 1 from track 3 at the same time
@KillConLeche4 жыл бұрын
Ahhhh I get it. So if you select to record to L on track 1, any channels panned to the left records to that track. Saves up a lot of space. So you can record multiple instruments simultaneously to track 1?
@424Recording4 жыл бұрын
Nailed it, Mikal! You can record up to 6 channels to one track :)

Thanks for the videos, I found this one and the mega tutorial very helpful! I record on a Porta Two and didn't really understand bussing until I watched your videos. I usually record one instrument at a time by myself, so since I don't need to worry about recording multiple instruments onto one track, is there ever a need for me to buss? Would there be a difference between bussing and just recording all of my tracks direct with the pan in the center?
@424Recording4 жыл бұрын
Glad they helped and that's great to hear. Yeah, that's something I mention briefly at the end. For what you're doing, I would just record direct. Then you don't have to worry about bussing at all! Happy recording, Matt, and thanks for watching!
