Does this unit have a Punch In/Out feature so you can get rid of that couple of notes at the start of the guitar solo? How would you do that without re-recording that track?

Very informative. This sounds like a dumb question, but how did you get the bass track in there? Did you run your guitar through that POG device and play the notes? I'm trying to figure out how to create bass track without a bass guitar. Thanks.

You can use a ribbon. Just put a cloud lift between the unit and the mic. The 48v will power the cloud lift with gain and protect the ribbon.

Crank it up, skip the tape.. straight to the daw. Bring it back to tape at a normal lever but already distorted 👍 😊. I do all kinds of crazy stuff with this machine lol

Hi, I have a question: When I record a song on my Tascam Model 12, all tracks 1-9 on the SD card sound exactly like the MTR tracks. But 11 and 12 and the Main Mix export sound terrible: thin, without depth, like from an old radio, just horrible. What could be the reason for this, what am I missing? Or is it a defect in the device? I would be very happy if you could help me further

That's so awesome. Until recently, I never realized that 4-track machines like this existed. I'm pretty sure I bought the more expensive cassette tapes for no reason. This experience with old hardware gives me new perspective as I try to learn my DAW. I think it would be awesome to get one of these to understand recording better.

Please help me. My track 4 ist working either. I plug the mic in, and i put my headphones on. I can hear it, and it reads on the sound meter, but it dosent playback any audio. I e used many mics, and im super bummed about it because my band wants to record our demo, but weve been at it all day, and it hasent wirked once. Please, if anyone can help, please

How can you use the M12 as a switch when it only has one main out (2 x XLR (L/R))? Do you mean switching between the main/sub/aux?

Is there potential risk of damaging the internal op-amps or circuits by feeding a guitar pedal chain into the Tascam? For example, having a fuzz and distortion pedal on that feeds into a dimed Fader and Trim on the unit. Is any clipping technically bad for the health of the unit, just some that is within reason, or have at it without worry?

How comes your volumes are at full. Gainstage and don’t blow them speakers. I have some of them and they’re real sensitive.

Thanks for the awesome video! We are a couple of old school DAWless musicians that also love the simplicity and quality of the TASCAM multi track recorders. And even though we live in different states, we are able to create music together using two TASCAM DP-32's, by sending SD cards back and forth while we each add our own contributions to the song we are working on. We do it for fun and upload our albums to our KZbin channel. The TASCAM's sound great, and are extremely versatile and allow us to use it like a simple reel to reel recorder or delve into the myriad of internal effects and features, and it works great either way.

Hey, any advice on getting my track align in my DAW? I’m sending my beats to a “Mini portastudio 02 MK II” The first couple of beats was perfectly align then the following day I’ve been having issues. So what I was doing was running my track through the Porta which out recording to tape, it gives a nice warm sound but not the tape sound unless I use a plugin.

If you go to the “Mixer” section, then “Phones Main Sel” - choose “Main Mix Pre” instead of “Post” and now you can enjoy an independent headphone mix without using up your sub outputs! Long time fan of the music and videos… cheers!

Hey thanks so much for this video. I'm thinking about a Model 12 and how it could work with my Apollo Duo. So the way yours is routed into the stereo channel.. how would you go about multitrack recording with it? Can you assign the line in to record to different tracks as you work? Or would you need to physically switch to the line in to other mono channels as you go? Also, is the excellent preamp quality of the Apollo being degraded by passing it through the pre amps of the Tascam before being recorded onboard or in the DAW do you think?

Just a warning to people. I just followed these instructions and now my machine won’t work anymore. I’m not saying not to do it… just be careful? Immediately after cleaning (still in cleaning mode) mine stopped playing. And now the tape heads won’t emerge or anything in non cleaning mode. It will attempt to play for 1 second and stop, with a subtle “power down” sound.

Why not using digitakt as midi slave to the mixer that has midi out with sync so you start of the recording will concide with the start of the pattern from the digitakt?

also dumb question but if I mixed on my portastudio with the panning nobs and adjusted the eq and such, will I be able to hear in stereo with all the panning and eq adjustments I made? As opposed to everything down the middle

I have the portastudio 424 mark 1. It doesn’t have a line out switch that can switch to mono, is that an issue or anything?
