Great looking engine and love the sound. Also, a bit surprised at the HP as I thought it would be higher. My little old 350 I built in my garage pulled 474 @7,000rpm but I also ran out of time for tuning at het my peak HP at the highest RPM reading and never did see a drop off. Maybe we are all just so spoiled by LS type builds that 500 just seems low. I can't believe I just typed 500 is low, what a time to be a Hot Rodder. Check my KZbin channel for my dyno pull if you are interested in seeing it. Also done on pump gas and 10.8:1 compression, nothing special.

An SBC that peaks any where 7k is a dog pain in the real world. This apples to oranges yours sounds like a drag build with zero street time boring. They built a King Kong street motor fun. Not a good comparison. built to do completely different jobs. HP shame/show off fail.

I agree with many here, 427 is big block displacement, that dual plane is choking it. my 406 made the same hp w/a flat tapped cam. now this set up including a 750 w/choke tower may be a great street set up, but don't call it the ultimate hp stroker build then...great engine regardless!

I think this engine build is a great combo Street/Strip Week-End Warrior that will give you lots of fun of the "Run What You Brung" crowd. I would squeeze this into a 2400-2600lbs. car/truck and have a blast. A setup like that would probably get you solidly into the low 11's or high 10's, and that would be a fun ride...

this motor turned out great ilike how they used the 5.85" rods , dragonslayer heads, and thumpr cam, and the power isn't excessive for a street small block because of wear issues and bearings. made this a reliable street or mild mannered race engine with a howling 427 cube thumper idle be great in my 81 camaro, go on a date drive to the track run some 10's drive home scan some time slips , post to camaro forums and facebook, and make a bunch of youtube videos.

You made a mistake with that dual-plane manifold. With a single -plane you should be over 600 hp. Someone here built a 414 sbc, same heads, and got 595hp. With the extra displacement you should get 600+ easy.

Im impressed, the cam, intake and carb and headers seemed to be on the mild side. And even with a quick tune this thing made a metric ton of torque. The numbers might be low for some these guys who think every engine is a MAX output challenge but the numbers were actually higher than I anticipated. With a good tune you could have over 550 hp and torque. Thats serious big block power out of a small block on PUMPGAS and there is still a ton of potential. With a solid roller cam and a single plane intake with a bigger carb I know theres another 120 ponies in there. Small, light, fits in any car or truck, revs to 7000 rpm....Good Build

I like this build's series of videos, but not getting to tune any on the dyno makes this video a flop. Some jetting and possibly some timing adjustments could;ve really woken that thing up. You never mention what the A/F Ratio was thru the power band. Further tuning will be by Butt-Dyno? Unless you pull the motor and get some more dyno time. A lot of money spent. If you pull another 50hp and 65 ft/lbs isn't the money spent on the dyno well worth it? At least it won't blow up because it's lean...

***** I think that's perfect. A lightweight pickup with 400 horsepower would be a blast to play around in. I think that people get too caught up in the big numbers that the magazines publish or they read about on the forums but never think about what it's like to drive. Motors that make those big numbers are often very tempermental and make poor torque down low, and as a result they just aren't fun to drive. Personally, I'm a fan of the widest torque band possible.

Your 406 (I’m assuming factory block), has simease cylinders, that mutha fuker does NOT have anywhere near the drivability that this engine does! It will run hotter than the hinges on hells gate! 2. This was NOT a drag race build smart guy! This is an everyday driver that can handle 75 mph on the freeway with the A/C frosting your gals nips when your sloppy POS 406 couldn’t make it to the next stop sign and broke! I swoop in and rocket out with your gal! 3. A 406 can make a lot of power but so can a 3.8 Buick V6! Watch the whole series and understand the concept before making yourself look dumber than you are! FML with you keyboard racing mofo’s! That statement that you made about the 406 equals to this statement: “One time at band camp, I stuck a flute up my pussy” Make sense now dip shit? Just tell the man that you think it was a good video or don’t say anything at all!

I'm curious as to why you guys went sort of cheap on the heads when most other components were fairly high end. No disrespect meant towards Brodix, which make some very nice heads, but it seems you might have been able to get more power with some higher flowing heads. That being said what you did get will make one hell of a fun car to drive.

Very nice series of videos - hit the important bits without the BS that some have. Elsewhere there has been some 'discussion' regarding the merits of an EFI equiped engine Vs carb' and distributor - have you done any comparison build, or even just straight TB/EFI builds - I would expect a noticeable improvement all round provided the carb and TB had the same AFM ratings? Regarding the exhaust manifolds, did you select them from theory and/or experience or were they the 'dyno' set that were already being used? Thanks.
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 9 жыл бұрын
GordonWG1 Great questions. We are hoping to eventually upgrade to a throttle body fuel injection system once the engine is in the car. And you are right, the headers for the dyno test were a set that were in the dyno room. I can't remember the specs, but they were a pretty standard set for an upgraded small block Chevy. I've got a set of Hooker shorties that will go on the engine once it's in the car.
@GordonWG1
@GordonWG1 9 жыл бұрын
The Horsepower Monster Thanks for the prompt response - the reason I was enquiring about the exhaust was because of the big difference the right/wrong set will make to the overall performance of the engine - on that note, I haven't heard anything but bad reports about 'shorty' or convenience manifolds. Whilst I know what a pain in the proverbial they can be, I would expect you would be much better off (as much as 50hp - shame you were too restricted in time to run the engine as installed) building a set for the engine in the car than using what are, IMO, crap. Anyway, it's your car and engine, so your call, be interested to see how it turns out - so happy trails and ticket free fun.

A little disappointed that after all he videos of the engine build it was just a rushed dyno test. Noticed the headers were turning orange in the video wondered if that was normal or part of rich / or lean condition. Question about dyno's is when you see hp numbers for speed parts I always notice that they are given high up in the RPM range and with street cars or truck this is kind of only half the story. what happens to the torque and hp curves down low. I mean if a person were to load an engine up on the dyno down to say 2000 rpm or smidge over. Either way Great Engine would love to have it.
@madtownmadman
@madtownmadman 8 жыл бұрын
The reason you often don't see dyno pulls in the lower RPM range is because engines often have rowdy camshafts in them. An engine with considerable camshaft duration will not pull down into low RPM under full throttle. They basically don't make enough torque at low speed, to overcome the load of the dyno. However, I'm sure this engine could've started its pull a bit lower in the rpm range. They just opted not to.
@johnharding91
@johnharding91 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the clarification. I have been looking for ways to increase low end torque on a vortec 350 ,, but all the performance parts etc. don't really show power gains until up in the RPM range and some kill low end torque , like your lumpty lump cam shafts.

I built a 381 Chevy engine with 9.8:1 compression, 511hp @6100rpm, and 492 torque @ 4900rpm, 91 octane pump gas and the carb is a 650 speed demon. The throttle response is unbelievable. So a 750 Holley on that monster 427 should be 👌

427 small block putting out over 500hp.........wtf. New meaning to the term Mighty Mouse. Chevy rules.

IDK I would still just get a LS7 at least 100lbs lighter, and about 580hp out of the crate plus it wont leak oil.

GlassTopRX7 guess you've worked on an ls7. I seen MANY, MANY of them leaking. That's what Chevrolet stands for. Cracked head every valve rattles oil leak every time.

Those numbers are sad why put a top notch rotating assembly but use a small cam, amd wimpy heads. Should be making 700+ hp with a 427

+Thomas Everett ..Did you watch the videos at all? Their clearly stated goal was to build an engine making 550 hp that is more than happy on pump gas with no bad habits making it totally street friendly. They also stated they wanted a strong bottom end so later if they want to change it to a maximum effort race engine the bottom end would already be there.. Cant believe you missed the entire point of their build project...way to pay attention.

+bubba stephens so whats the point of this. its just a run in the mill 550hp engine..... I perfer engines that make 3 times the power. they did make a strong 550 hp engine on pump that has a rotating assembly stronger than the block. but would it killed them to put so 18° cyl heads on it lol

I don't know how the price stacked up when this was shot but I've wanted to make this motor myself. Priced everything out through Summit/JEGS off of the supplied parts list he released and it came out to about $9300 in parts unless I screwed something up. Didn't count any machining costs though. Hope that helps.

Was a little disappointed in the power figured it would of been in the high 600hp if not 700hp you can get 500hp out a 383 stroker let alone a 427 small block it needs the smurf juice
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 9 жыл бұрын
nathan butler You are right, this isn't an ultimate horsepower motor. But it isn't wound up so tight it can blow at any minute, it runs on pump gas, it makes good power in a real-world rpm range, it uses all off-the-shelf easily available parts, and we didn't even do any port work. That should count for something, right?
@TheHorsepowerMonster
@TheHorsepowerMonster 9 жыл бұрын
nathan butler No worries, we're always looking for more power, too. Please send us a photo of your engine once you get it built on our Facebook page once you get it done, we definitely want to see it. And thanks for watching!

Too have it built, probably $15000 to $20000. Cheaper to get all machine work done at a shop, buy all the parts listed, and assemble everything yourself. Could save 5 to 10 thousand. Just research a little bit about bearing clearances and stuff like that. Get Er done!
