Finally had the time to watch the stream. Thank you for your kind words, Philip. I'm ashamed to say that the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference went over my head; I need to get back to it at some point (I only read the first 2 books/parts so far). Your plan to read the Warlord Chronicles might be the perfect excuse for me to get back into it as I put it on pause (1/3 into book 2) because it was a bit too tragic/depressing for my taste at the time. You will be surprised at how different it is from the typical Arthurian legend. What about the Last Kingdom? Would you say it has more of a lighter tone from your recollection? I'm also very excited for your Marineford/Post-War review. I could just rant on and on about how great it is, and I share your sentiment that Post-War has some of the best moments of the whole saga, but I'll be patient and leave that for when the video drops. Congrats again on the 42k, and I know that the next milestone will be surpassed very soon. Cheers!
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy2 ай бұрын
@@darKuchiki Thanks so much! If I recollect correctly, The Last Kingdom is pretty grim in tone, perhaps similar to The Warlord Chronicles if I have the right impression of Cornwell’s storytelling. I’m gathering my thoughts on Marineford and Post War!

Congratulations, Phillip! I enjoyed the Q&A so much. Is it weird that I found The Book of The New Sun easier than Malazan? 😅 Probably your discussion series has a role to play, but your Malazan videos are also great,... so. One day, I will come to enjoy Malazan the way you do 😅
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy2 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! I don't think it's weird at all -- you never know how a book or series will hit a given reader. Both BoTNS and Malazan offer loads of philosophy, symbolism, deep themes, and other things to get the brain going. My very best to you for all your reads!

Congratulations 🎉 I just finished the Way of Edan audiobook! Very good 💯/💯 I will be reading ahead 😄 I am hopeful to be apart of your community 🙏🏽 there are a few things that took me a moment to get into the audiobook but by the end Allen had a great handle on the pacing. It's a shame-nay, a disgrace-that no one ever seems to mention Akira anymore, whether the manga or the anime. Both are excellent, and I'd argue that Akira has been as influential on manga and anime (especially in the West) as The Lord of the Rings has been on the fantasy genre. Stranger Things, Inception, Chronicle, and The Matrix, to name a few, are all titles inspired by Akira.
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy2 ай бұрын
@@sjoerdth It’s on my shortlist! I couldn’t remember the title during my livestream, but someone else has already convinced me to read it. Cheers!
@sjoerdth2 ай бұрын
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy I think it's fair to say you could put Akira in the "transcendent" category. I saw Akira around 1991/1992 when I was about 10 or 11 years old. As a Dutch kid living in a small town in the pre-internet era, it was truly a life-changing experience. It opened up a completely new universe of possibilities in my young mind. Looking back, I didn't understand half of it, but my jaw was on the floor from the first to the last second. The anime, to this day, still holds up as one of the best animated movies. The manga is much more expansive.

Since you've already read post-war, I imagine you've kinda realsied this already, but i think rereading marineford after the ASL flashback is a must for all op fans before jumping into the next arc Especially given how it recontextualises aces character so much

I've been thinking about this, and I'm coming to the point where I actually think Oda was right to present the story the way he did. I'll address this for sure in my video, though. Cheers!
@Shadow-fb2ec2 ай бұрын
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy So many people say asl should've been prior to marineford or during it So seeing you say oda was right to do it after makes me feel validated haha To me I don't think fiction should be locked to only one way of telling a story or presenting something That's how you get revolutionary moments in fiction, is by going against expectations or the normal way of executing a story

I am late but congratulations Philip! - and of course before I finished watching you gained another 800 subscribers or something... Of course I had lots of thoughts on all this but the one thing I'll write here is that I think one of the reasons that certain people in STEM might look down of the humanities is because, in general, with my somewhat limited knowledge, it seems to me that the humanities are generally just taught worse. Personally I think I'm more of a liberal arts guy, and given that I am here, I obviously agree with you that the humanities are very important. However, I think it's important to acknowledge that what might be seen as "snobbery" from STEM people is not necessarily derived from them being "snobs" but instead from them looking around and (often quite justifiably) seeing what appears to be on average less competent instruction, less intelligence required to get by in class, and the presence of what they (and I) might consider silly/useless/psuedoscientific stuff. I don't expect most people here to agree with all my individual opinions on this, but obviously I think this is a problem that needs fixing.
