Honestly, one of the better if not best thoughts on the Fishman Island Saga, most people don't really see the themes on display until someone points them out. Most people see it as a boring part of the story but once they see the structure of it, they change their minds. While it's not the best arc/saga, it's still great. Enjoying seeing your Journey through One Piece, and can't wait to see more.

The major problem with timeskip is that before we saw how Strawhats grow and how powerful they were, but after the timeskip they met with fishmen and Luffy gets somewhat beaten again. And you're sitting there thinking, wth were you all training for for two years, guys? It took Oda several years until I got rid of that feeling.

Fishman Island and Hody's story is such a great reflection on hatred, prejudice but also what happens to people when influenced by their environment Hody became the bottled embodiment of those concepts. He's often talked about in the fandom as a weak character who wouldn't work as an antagonist in other arcs And i'm like that's exactly why he's perfect for FMI He's completely void of real substance. Only powered by anger and hatred, his 'powerups' being artificial and ephemeral. And he ended all shrivelled and weak, consumed by that hatred. Even Arlong had compassion for his own crew and men he called brothers.

He's such a cautionary tale of what happens when unfounded prejudice and hate gets transferred to the younger generations. Like we see in Tiger's flashback he even had damn good reason to be prejudiced, but even he said "Nah. I may hate them, but I can't give that hate to the kids. It dies with me." That alone is such a nuanced take. And then Hordy becoming the result of that hatred that others passed down for him and it turned him into more of a monster than even Tiger's actual hate could create. Hordy is exactly the villain that this story needed to have. Because this thing is happening in real life and the quicker we learn to see it, the better we can try to stop it. I love Fishman Island

7:33 The stepping on the photo of Queen Otohime is a reference to the practice of fumi-e, which was the practice of stepping on Christian icons of either Jesus or Virgin Mary during the Tokugawa shogunate (1603-1868). This lead to Kakure Kirishitans (literally hidden Christians) that disguised them praying to Christian statues of Virgin Mary as praying to Buddhist deities like Kannon/ Guanyin. Christianity got spread during Oda Nobunaga's time and became a perceived danger to the authority of the noble class that practiced Shintoism and Buddhism. The spread of Christianity was also one of the main reasons Japan became isolated for 250+ years with the isolationist policy named Sakoku (literally chained/closed country) during the Tokugawa shogunate. Oda is referencing the practice of fumi-e to show that Queen Otohime's kindness and innocence isn't ordinary but on another level, a saint-like level.

Something that isn't discussed enough to me is Sanji (and Nami's) reaction to Jinbe and his story. What Sanji's doing is basically a response to his family being hurt, and I don't think that would be a bad thing, he's an emotional and reactionary character by nature. But the discourse around is just ignored because of the nosebleed gag earlier making his character less bearable. I think it's important to make a distinction between that and this moment. And this isn't the first time it happens either. When Usopp was captured in the Sea train, right after Sanji met him and Franky, he called Usopp an ''Ex Friend''. Yet in the next panel, he kicks Franky for the pain he put Usopp through, calling him ''Our Long nose''. So it's not a 'defending woman' thing. He cares deeply about them and in this case He's aware of the help Jinbe gave to Luffy so he didn't go directly for the kick and let him explain himself. Jinbe was ready to pay for forgiveness and Sanji reacted with asking him to '' kill himself ''. Big cultural context lost there. Sanji specifically asks him tp ''commit Seppuku''. Which is quite radical i agree, but knowing the meaning of that act, which is a sacrifice to restore one's honour, i think it fits in terms of honesty, especially from a japanese audience. And i'm certain Sanji wouldn't watch Jinbe commit to it and just wanted to be sure he was sincere. But the main target of such an apology being Nami, it's directly redirected to her and how SHE's the one having the word regarding Jinbe. And she, of course, forgives him. Which puts back everyone back in the same boat. It's like Oda was addressing two sides of the argument, the sincerity of Jinbe through such act and Nami's forgiveness and growth from her experience with Arlong and her newfound family. And i'm again convinced of that being the goal because Oda puts Sanji and Jinbe together to defeat Wadatsumi right after that, showing there's no resentment and that Everything's fine now between all of them.

@BladeEdge8610 күн бұрын
It all goes to what Luffy's definition of hero is. Some of the people Luffy has helped would view him as heroic, and he has done heroic deeds, but sees himself primarily as someone who just looks out for himself and those he cares about. This is yet another example of Oda taking inspiration from Dragon Ball as Goku never really saw himself as a hero either for similar reasons.

What I like most about this arc is that Oda was able to create a conflict that put Luffy in a crisis despite quite easily overpowering his opponent even in their element. I don't think it would have been effective if fishman island had a formidable opponent, regardless of being jacked up on drugs, since the reason they separated for 2 years was to build the strength and maturity to make it in the New World. Had they struggled mightily then their training could have been considered moot.

My favorite moment in all of One Piece is in this arc, and it's when Luffy is playfully observing the fish-men and mermaids and their distinctions, remarking that their vibrant colors and varied shapes are "fun." And like first of all, it's rare for Luffy to be so calm, it's such a stark contrast that's nice to see, but second it's such a strong display of character on his part. The differences that other characters will often find revolting or a point of inferiority are just fun additions in Luffy's eyes. They're people like anyone else in the world with differences to be celebrated and appreciated. Really sets him apart from everyone else, I think.

I'm a little late to the party this time around, but well summarized as usual. This is one of the best arcs in the series not for it's immediate plot or for action, but for the motifs and themes and ideas addressed. You covered them excellently. I personally love fisher tiger and his character arc because of the struggle and internal strife he faced in the wake of the worst the world had to offer, and choosing to take up arms but maintaining his sense of "understanding the other' as you eloquently put it. Koala is the primo example here, best manifested when saying after throwing his gun to the ocean "we're not those animals, the celestial dragons. We won't kill you for crying. *Grabs her* ITS OKAY TO CRY!". That part gets me every time.

When Shanks and Whitebeard met face to face Whitebeard asked what enemy he lost his arm to. Shanks replied that he gave it to the next generation. As you pointed out Shanks handed down his straw hat as part of a legacy or inherited will to Luffy. Shanks mentioned to Rayleigh that Luffy was saying the same things that Gol D Roger used to say. It also gives a little more weight and meaning behind Shanks leaving his treasured straw hat with Luffy.

Shanks lost his arm and that's a plot hole. Do not misunderstand me, I find it completely ok, considering how long and complex the story is, it needs to happen. Especially that the creators of manga have little time and a lot of work to constantly keep making new chapters. The only thing I do not like is trying to explain everything by hardcore fans. More plot holes: Even very strong characters which appear also in the early period of the story never use haki, no one ever mentions it. The moment it came up, immediately it's one of the main subjects, constantly coming up everywhere. Just creator got a nice idea how to create a new power up and implemented it. Early power ups of Luffy are very harmful, and they slowly destroy him, however it gets forgotten and he gets new power ups from nowhere, whenever it is 'time' for it. There are more plot holes, but still it's a great story, just please, do not try to explain everything. Oda is just a human and he creates a lot spontaneously which affects what was created before. The huge difference of powers between marine pirates, Crocodile was very weak only because he was the enemy of Luffy early, that is all, nothing more. I haven't read the manga after the anime but if he gets back into fighting, I'm sure he will now be using haki, despite his age almost didn't age. Powering up characters makes no sense, a simple example, for about 15 years they became only 'that' strong, and then immediately in 2 months they became 10x stronger, and in 2 years 10000x stronger.
@tehSunBro15 күн бұрын
@@arthurmeyer2977 Well for starters, the "price" for Luffy's powerups still comes in regularily, even after the timeskip, at least for the first one. The revelation that Shanks actually let it happen is also something that is heavily implied. We may not have known it in Chapter 1, but it is very obvious once we learned about it, that Shanks use conquerers haki to get rid of the lord of the coast. Shanks didn't forget about using armament, he deliberately chose to let it happen, to teach Luffy a very important lession. Being a pirate means business, it's not just fun and games with your friends drinking in a bar telling fun stories. For Luffy thats all he knew. And then Shanks showed him, that even a godlike pirate like him could easily be in trouble if he got too careless.
@arthurmeyer297715 күн бұрын
@@tehSunBro This is exactly what I was talking about. Completely meaningless and illogical fan made arguments of why something happened. always enjoy hearing your thoughts on the story! particularly for fisher tiger, i love how the narrative highlights that his inability to forgive wholly isn't based on pure hatred but more so resentment for the suffering he was caused. his character is one of the greatest in the story to me, because he is fully aware of how these feelings go against what he stands for. when arlong urges him to kill humans, he explains that the sun pirates' goal isnt to take revenge on them, but to achieve liberation for the oppressed, human or fishman, as its shown with koala. he knows that liberation and hatred cannot coexist, yet he is a person with feelings, after all, and it is not so easy to let go and forgive the trauma he was put through. while he couldn't accept the human's blood and felt ashamed of himself for it, he fought until the end to avoid passing those feelings of resentment to his crew, and his message always remained as one of freedom for all. his death is so tragic because he couldn't overcome this resentment, yet it speaks of an admirable strength in his character: he knows his goal, his will to live freely will only carry in the hearts of those who seek it without hatred, that it is greater than his personal feelings, and so this is the message he gives them, to not let their hatred be the cause for their death as it was being his, and instead make freedom (from both hatred and oppression, either towards them or others) their driving force to live

Yeah, and it's also great how this recontextualises Arlong too. We basically see three generations: Fisher Tiger, has suffered first hand and been broken. He still tries to do the right thing but understandably is unable to let go of his hatred. Arlong, has seen first hand the evils and has seen them affect people he respects and cares about. Still has taken the weaker path of simply becoming a smaller bully unleashing his frustrations on those even weaker while deluding himself that he's somehow getting back at those he hates. Hody, has seen nothing, he's basically just larping the stuff he heard the adults talk about without understanding any of it. Just a thug looking for an excuse to be violent.

Hody wasnt that terrifying physically, even after he took those drugs, except for the fact that he himself wasnt a direct victim of the racism towards the Fishmen. Ending the cycle of hatred took a kind of strength that he didnt have or want, but Otohime and Fisher did. Wonderful.

This is such a good review of the saga! You hit on all of the big themes and key emotional moments throughout the story. A lot of people seem to dislike this arc due to the primary villain, Hody, not having particularly deep motivations. I'm glad that you read it the same way I did, that being without deeper motives is the point of Hody as a villain. His hatred was taught by others rather than being informed by his own experiences with humans. His refusal to see the situation in anything except black and white based on what he learned secondhand makes him the physical incarnation of Otohime's fear for what the future people would be like if they kept teaching the children hatred. That's why I loved the moment at the end of the arc when you see the fishman children asking their parents about humans. The responses show that the parents are at first defaulting to their prejudiced generalizations but then they remember the message about ending the cycle of blind hatred and correct themselves by attempting to give more nuanced answers regarding the "other" people as individuals. And I think that message about valuing individuals based on their own actions and character rather than making biased assumptions is also captured in Luffy's response to those same people when they ask if he's a good or bad human. Luffy telling them to watch his actions and decide for themselves in perfectly in character and lets his emotional intelligence shine. He knows claiming to be a good person would be empty words (and he doesn't want to be seen as a good person or a hero anyway, he just wants to do what he wants and help his friends and his deeds just happen to be good and heroic). He wants everyone to decide for themselves how they feel about each individual, including himself, only based on what they've seen themselves of the character of these other people. In that way, Luffy is the perfect human to challenge the cycle of hate as it existed in Fishman Island. I always love hearing your thoughts on my favorite story! Thanks for sharing! It's exciting seeing you get so close to catching up as well (at least in terms of arcs lol). Looking forward to your reaction to everything coming up!

Thanks for another great episode Philip. As others have mentioned in the comments already Otohime and the Palace come from the story of Urashima Taro, a Japanese folktale of an underwater palace and kingdom. Oda does a beautiful job in this arch of a marriage between cultures between Japanese and Greek stories. This marriage is even symbolized in Shirahoshis parents as her father is Neptune and her mother is Otohime. Theres also some Japanese symbolism in Shirahoshis name as it would directly translate to “White Star” in English. As Hoshi refers to both stars and planets in Japanese, her name alludes to her being the ancient weapon of Poseidon, as that name relates to the planet Neptune.

Post-timeskip, here we go! People often dismiss the post-timeskip arcs (especially Fishman Island and the arc right after it) as uninteresting and lacking the charm of the arcs before the timeskip. I never put together how Shirahoshi is hidden away and secluded, alone, out of fear, the same way Fishman Island as a whole is. That’s just so beautiful, and brilliant on Oda’s part. The more I think about One Piece the more beautiful (nearly) every aspect of the story is.

I was sooo waiting for this video! Such a beautiful insight into this saga, which I just love. Specially because Oda treats this subject so masterfully and with such nuance, reflecting how hatred is really inherited in our world. I’ve always thought that this particular saga should be studied in schools in my country haha, because my country is really hurt by hatred passed down by awful events of the past. Amazing video as always! Thanks!

Most people that I've heard from theorize that Luffy's destruction of fishman island will be a more literal one than a symbolic one. That maybe later on he will do something that inadvertently destroys the island, either after or as the fishmen are about to join the rest of the world. Never heard anyone claim that Madam Shyarly's prediction about Luffy has already come true in a more symbolic way. Great way to think about it.

Great video, Chase. Really liked your insight on Shirahoshi and Hody. Otohime and Fisher Tiger are great examples of one of Oda's great strengths as a writer; how he deals with death in his story. Beyond the tragedy of their characters and the circumstances of their deaths, Oda makes sure that when he introduces characters that are already deceased, they are truly mourned. You can feel the people of Fishman Island were begging to still have the guidance of these figures to help them through this generational trauma. Otohime and Fisher Tiger were paragons of growth for the Fishmen, and without them to gracefully light a path, fear and uncertainty took over. And where the future is so fearful and uncertain, channelling hate towards others offers an easy means of certainty in oneself, but will always send them towards destruction. The lesson that is learned with all of these characters is that if we so desperately want the guidance of people who are no longer around, we must internalise their values and carry on their will as their own. We must guide ourselves and each other towards that ideal of theirs we loved. Whether its Otohime, Fisher Tiger, Kuina, Bell-mére, Hiriluk, Tom or Sabo, their ideals are inherited by those who mourn them so they can create the future they wanted from them. Oda gets a lot of flak for how he handles death in this series, usually in reference to the large number of fairly corny fake-out deaths during arcs. But to me, it feels like its driven by him understanding how important death really is to people. If much more of these characters who get taken out of commission for the sake of elevating stakes during an arc's climax actually died, it would cheapen the gravity of the more important deaths. ------ I've recently reread this arc as part of my reread of the whole manga (I forgot a lot of my initial read lol), and this arc has so much going for it. It has so much meaningful things to say about Fishman which builds incredibly well upon what we know from Sabaody and from our own personal knowledge of racism, and its exploration of freedom through the metaphor of the sun continues on incredibly from Thriller Bark. Arlong is transformed from a villain with recognisable but largely basic allusions to real-world black separatism, into a much more well-rounded, deep and compelling character that enriches the world and themes of the greater narrative from the start... and that's through mainly one flashback. Seriously impressive work from Oda. I consider the arc to really be in the same league in that regard as the series best. That being said, with all of the hype building towards getting to Fishman Island over the previous few years of serialisation, and all of the significance of the messaging and theming during the arc, I don't think many are wrong in thinking that the great strengths of the arc are undercut by the arc's needing to be a comeback sweep for the Strawhats. Beyond Hody, the minor antagonists in this arc are abused for comedy in this arc so much that one sometimes forgets most of them share the same values as Hody, which leads to a climax which feels somewhat farcical with a pretty big disconnect from the deep emotional core of the arc. Hody would be considered to be a greater villain in this series if he wasn't connected to a gang filled with borderline gag-characters, and by extension the arc would be better regarded and recognised for its accomplishments by more. In short, I think the arc pushes the limit of Oda's style of juxtaposition, and it's hard to really take the arc as a whole seriously. Sanji's nosebleed being a legitimate story beat and set-up for the Jinbe and Luffy payoff just frustrates a lot of people.
@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy16 күн бұрын
Thank you for sharing your thoughts in this excellent comment! I actually ended up increasing my estimation for Fish-Man Island as I read further, with the blood transfusion being the emotional climax. It's hard to set up new villains for every saga, I'm sure, and I agree that these are not Oda's most complex characters, but I think he was going for heavy symbolism here, and flat characters lend themselves to that better than fleshed out ones. I'm also amazed at how Oda balances goofiness with serious themes, but there must be limits to that, as you say, and perhaps you're right that he came closer to those limits here. All the best!
@ruine230616 күн бұрын
@@PhilipChaseTheBestofFantasy You do make a point regarding the flatness of the villains with the flatness of their moral characters. In my opinion Oda's key decision tone-wise was to either make the villains very menacing or very unthreatening and keep them flat regardless. A lot of OP readers are more accustomed to the former, and one could say that the sinister nature of Hody's philosophy and where he came from deserves to be treated as such. However, we had just come from such a tense and emotional saga that a come-up was needed to balance the scales and set the tone back for the second half of the full narrative. Fishman Island could potentially have been very intense if it wasn't made as light-hearted as it is. Basically, you win some and you lose some

One of my favorite underrated characters to revisit in this arc is Shirahoshi's brothers, and not the cool oldest bro, but the 2 silly ones. At first, their characters were just shown as if they're just another comedic duo to fill in Oda's gag-of-the-arc quota, but then boom! He showed you what happened in the flashback, and suddenly it's not so funny anymore. I can't imagine their pain, having to force themselves to act silly during a moment when their own dear Mom was dying before them. It's such a short scene so no one talks about them a lot, but I really feel their pain for some reason. It's the fact that they had to shove their grief away. And you know I just thought of this as i am writing this comment, but since the 2 brothers continues to do their silly dancing and singing acts even when Shirahoshi's not around, while it might be totally not Oda's intention, it feels like a coping mechanism for themselves. Like a dark humor known only to them. God dammit i just make myself extra sad for these two again! 🥲

I love this arc, there is so much good stuff in it. The flashback was great, the location looks just stunning, the scene where luffy knocks out 50.000 opponents only using his haki in one single blow was amazing to see and the red hawk, an homage to his late brother, caught me off guard and let me sobbing in awe. Great lore and world building as well. Jinbei sharing his blood with luffy is still one of my favorite scenes in all of one piece. I wish we’d have had more interactions amongst the straw hats, but that’s honestly the biggest and only noteworthy “bad” thing about this arc. And I’m very excited for the new world. The thing about that part is that while it is different in many ways from the pre time skip it is still great. I’m excited for yours thoughts on it and hope you enjoy!

Great video professor! I really appreciate these videos and i find another perspective on the series, it's refreshing. When I read it I found the act of jimbe giving blood to luffy as an act of one being loyal to your close ones in spite of the environment being against you, rather than your appreciations on the matter. I also personally find it very interesting that one piece can be as deep as one looks into it, some people only want to see the action and cool moves and all that, and that's fine, and then there's also a deeper meaning in the work if you want to look for it. Hope to see the next part!

This is the most themes-driven arc along with Skypiea for me. Both also being the 2 arcs with maybe the "cleanest" and most polished art by Oda. And both portraying how much of a symbol Luffy is. Directly or indirectly. I love how Oda actually tried to approach some sort of "answer" to the racism problematic. Most shows approach this theme just by showing how bad it is. Here Oda points at the children. And the role the adults gotta assume towards children. Even the adults that have that hatred inside. (Also what you pointed out about friendship) The lore feels so ominous too... Man I love it!! My only push back here is Sanji's gag, but I think we all agree here

One of the things that people don't seem to understand is that luffy ignoring the history of fishman island is the reason he is able to help them. The thing is he doesn't feel pity for them like a lot of people would he comes to them on an equal ground. They know almost exactly the same things about each others history which is nothing so when he says decide for yourself what i am it means something greater than someone who sees themself as a savior trying to sweep in and save their people it would demean everything they fought for everything they lived for while luffy does whatever he wants and doesn't care who you are if you're a friend to him you get help if you're an enemy and hurt people he cares about you eat dirt. This means the fishman aren't indebted to a savior they're indebted to a friend an equal.

In this arc I started seeing a pattern with Luffy - he would not hold back on being mean and the name calling when it comes to a pink haired cry baby character (Koby being one, now Shirahoshi). Haha. But after watching the post-war arc, I get it - Luffy was made fun of for being a cry baby constantly. It makes so much sense for him to react so strongly towards cry baby characters that seem to represent the part of him he was probably not most proud of, and so he pushes these characters really hard (for their own good). I too love that moment between Luffy and Jinbe, and when he tells Jinbe to join his crew. Because Jinbe means so much to Luffy, being the one who was there for Luffy at his lowest moment when Ace died.
