Hi Pepe and Eugenia! Have been following you channel since the beginning and I am loving your journey. Just wanted to give my 2 cents about the solar off grid system. I have been living off grid based in Portugal for almost 2 years now. I used to a lot of problems with my solar system and ended up using the generator almost daily in winter time. After some research I found out that I was scammed by the company that sold me and installed the equipment as they said it was very high end and very efficient and that I would have no problems living off grid during the winter. They charged me very high prices for very low quality cheap equipment. After finding out I have made a complete renovation of my off grid solar system and haven't had a single problem yet. I can tell you that I went from using a generator almost every day in December and January to not using my generator a single time this winter yet. A lot of installers and solar companies will tell you to just add more batteries when you tell them you are struggling with an off grid system.They do this because that's usually how they get the largest profit, but it will not solve the problem for the costumer, only postpone it. What you always need to do is to add solar production. Bear in mind that when there is no sun, your system should be able to produce around 5 to 10% of its rated maximum capacity. This means that if you have a 5KW solar array, you will always be able to produce around 250 to 500w in cloudy days. This will mean that you will have more than enough production for your everyday use during the day (laptops, tv, fridge, etc) without having to pull from the batteries, which means that you will only use power from the batteries at night. And adding panels is always much cheaper that adding batteries (even if you have to change your solar charger). And it means that you will have greater production all year round and that you are much more likely to supply your demands directly from solar during the day (when using power tools or washing machines for example). I don't know if you are aware of this, but I have also noticed that you have an odd number of solar panels (5 panels), which means they should all be connected in series to form a string of panels. Bear in mind that if one of the panels is partial shade, all the string will be affected in the same way. If for example your panels are rated for 350w and there is shade in one of your panels making it produce only 50w, all the other panels in the same string will only produce 50w max as well, bringing your total production to only 250w for the string, instead of the supposed 1750w. if you want I am available to chat, I can give you some tips on how to improve your off grid system and help you calculate if the system may be undersized and if so what is the best way to make it better and more efficient. Bottom line is: remember to always take what solar companies tell you with a grain of salt. Do some research online first to see if that is really the best solution for you. Wish you all the best!

We went through the same event. We bought a generator as well and then got tired of the continual noise so we bought an Eco Flow Delta solar generator to use to give us a break from it at night for better sleep.

Hi Les! thank you, that looks like a great portable solution! in our case, without sun it would not have been much of help. We turn the generator a bit less than an hour to charge our big battery, which will last us for a couple of days straight without any sun. We have ended up turning it on only 3 times so far, so super happy with our current set up! Glad you got yours to work too! See you later today for the new episode!

Here in the Atlanta, Georgia area we have a winter storm tradition - when the news comes for a storm alert, everyone runs to the store and buys bread, milk, eggs, bacon and syrup. We call it French toast time. When the ice comes, it freezes our land line telephone and electrical wires and they crack and break, so life gets quiet and dark and the flashlights and candles come out. After the first day of outage, Dad goes into the garage and sets up the generator to keep the refrigerator and freezer running to save the investment in stored food. It shows in your "off-grid" living that your situation is not much different then our suburban life. You have truly build a 'modern' tiny house. Love your videos and your stamina to get the job done with grace and hard effort. Thank you for sharing with us.

Gracias por este nuevo vídeo. A mi me pasó algo similar.

Great videos and content. I've enjoyed watching you two build the house. Living off grid has it short comings sometimes, but the freedom you get is priceless. Have you thought of a small turbine? Nothing too big, but it could add to your battery storage overnight. Ps. I would have cut the small wood with the saw too. People who argue otherwise shouldn't have a car, because they have legs! Use the tools you have the best way you can to preserve time for more important things.

A simple vertical axis wind turbine would help particularly in the winter months when it tends to be blustery. Alternatively you might consider a wood powered steam turbine in place of that generator.

You should think about a small wind generator connect to your system. In Portugal (like in Spain) when there is no sun there is wind. And have the generator as a backup 😉
@ModernHouseCabin2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rui! yes we have been looking into them for a while! but they are not as easy to put to work as they seem like, it requires a bit more of research and many changes in the installation to make it work nicely. And our are is not windy in a good way, it is sudden wind gusts all the time which is not really a good scenario for wind generator. ¡But it is for sure something that personally interests me, so be sure we WILL be trying it in the future!

We disconnected our wind generator (for the second time) after it got hit by lightning and took out the entire system - have lightning arrestors, but they were not successful at preventing this. There could be a solution to this, but we have not found it yet.
@ModernHouseCabin2 жыл бұрын
@@lyrelprice5739 thank you, never thought about that. What’s your experience with strong wind gusts?
@lyrelprice57392 жыл бұрын
@@ModernHouseCabin We are in Alberta, Canada - the solar panels are on the south side of the house and have adjustments for Spring to Autumn angle (more horizontal), and Autumn to Spring angle (more upright), based on the angles specified for our region - the setup is homemade, with wood, by my Engineer husband - there was a Huge windstorm a couple of years ago that damaged the most Western panel support, so we have 'beefed up' the wood supports for all the panels, and have not had any problems since then - The house is at the top of a hill, and as a friend of ours says "we are in the teeth of the wind", so we generally have a lot of breeze, and then the occasional windstorm or Chinook that blows thru - The lightning arrestors that failed in the lightning strike were professionally installed, but obviously not robust enough. The wind turbine/system that we had was only producing a maximum of 40 watts - so doubling up the solar panels and the batteries was, for us, a better option (especially after the lightning strike), but also because the cost of a better wind generation system is quite high, and because we generally have a Lot of sunny days in Alberta, even in winter - this means that when there is sun in Winter there isn't any cloud cover to retain the heat, and so we can get bitterly cold temperatures, and very short daylight days. The sunshine in summer, and higher levels of light and longer days also give the solar system a good return, with a breeze to modify the heat in the house especially when the temperatures get above 30 C. Our solar system produces 3 Kw (3000 watts), and runs all the electricals in the house and shop (the largest consumer is the refrigerator at 375 Kw per year) I would not claim that we know everything about available options, but at the moment those are our experiences.

Nice solution. Careful with the gas for the generator tho, regular gas has a tendency to spoil. We see this all the time here with garden tools that are left over the winter with the gas inside, they don't start when the gardening season starts. Gas with additives does better, using up after the winter is a good idea too.

Mid December to mid January are the most difficult weeks for off-gridders, and this time combined with a week long bad weather it is clear that going solely solar is not yet a full option, unless you have a very oversized battery bank. We use a 7kw (non inverter) generator for our borehole pump, and on days like these we let it charge the battery bank as well. Overall we have to use our generator for this maybe 3 times a year, that Is all. We have a Genergy as well by the way, very pleased with the brand, and half as expensive as the market leader Honda.
@ModernHouseCabin2 жыл бұрын
completely agree with your comment, we will be tweaking our system in the future with what we learn from our first winters. So glad to read that you also went for Genergy, they are rock solid, or that is what everyone told me! very happy with ours so far! will let you know if that changes 🤣

We have doubled up on the number of panels And batteries, and, of course, reduced our electrical consumption. We now have 2X the size recommended for a single family house, but monitoring electrical use is still very important at all times. Add to that that certain activities like vacuuming, and laundry only happen on sunny days. Despite all that, this time of year is tricky - we have a generator, and like you, will have to run it a few times over the winter. Learning curve after 10 years, lol.

Hey, If I csn give any tips -having lived off grid with my familly for years-. First of all, in the winter you don't need a fridge !!! It's cold !!! Make a animal proof box outside on the nord-side and you're done, your food will always be cold (or even frozen). If you want to be sure it won't realy freeze then dig a hole and put your box fridge there. Btw this works pretty fine in summer too, as long as you don't try to conserve meat/fish (you can keep cheese for a few days though, depending what kind of cheese it is it can last even a week or two). I haven't gotten a fridge since 7 years, like, no fridge at all -living in france, it can get up to 35 degrees celcius in summer, so it works pretty fine). Secondly, get a seperate system for computer (and such), and for lighting., and try to get as much directly on 12 o 24V (so without using a conventer) that saves a lot of electricity, and with having separate batteries for lighting you're sure you'll never run out of light, even in midwinter. Btw, you can run a laptop perfectly well on 12V (or 24V) with the right wiring. Not using a converter saves a lot of energy. If you are offgrid also with water, make a small isolated watertower, so you'll always have water pressure. You don't need a big reservoir (like 200-300L is enough), but you'll always have running water. To get the water into the reservoir, you can use a electrical pump, but also have a manual as backup (there are quite a few practical manual pumps that exist) Then, if you use a generator, don't forget that you can also get a battery charger with it. So you turn on the generator and use that to charge the batteries of your solar-system... so you only have to put it on like half and hour or hour a day (or even every few days). Good luck !
@ModernHouseCabin2 жыл бұрын

I also bought one of those hybrid inverters from Spain!

Good choice Cindy! I don´t think they get better than this! Merry Christmas!

You can remove the inverter screen and place it in the house where you can see without going to where the inverter is located

I occasionally use the chop saw for branches, just depends whats going on in shop. I have a small battery chain saw that I prefer. I don't use the bug chain saw, that's dad's job. At 78 he's starting to scare me. We also have a gasoline splitter that I can roll stump on which makes it real nice. We built a lean to roof on the side of barn couple summers ago & have about 5 chords of wood preparing for the day dad can't play lumber Jack. Also makes it nice because we try to only use down trees & branches in the forest & the occasional dying. Have to leave some dead trees up for insects & birds. Forest here in the Ozark mountains been struggling due to drought & high temperatures past 12 years. Started noticing it after 2008/09 deep freeze that hit the south. I plant 2-3 dozen trees every year of different species that help feed the insects, critters, & game but they don't ask survive to maturity

Wow, what a total nightmare! Glad it all worked out well in the end, plus the celebration made me laugh out loud! It’s your first winter and I’m sure you both are still getting used to living in the cabin. Hope you’re having a wonderful Christmas now! 🎄 Mj

build a tin roof generator closed box with vents for air and exhaust.. make sure both vents are covered with steel mesh so no rats or other vermin get into the box... last but not least get a spare spark plug (if your model has one) and 2 stroke engine oil... top the generator with oil after every 5 uses. regards from Singapore, Happy New year.. GOD BLESS.

just found your channel this week- very impressed with your modern cabin; I would like to build something like it but a little larger to use as a summer kitchen and guest house when friends visit my rural property.
