43012 Weedhopper 3D Concept

Introducing the new 43012 Weedhopper. I've re-engineered 90% of the OEM JC-24 C for easy storage in a garage and transport via a 5'x8' utility trailer. Featuring:
1. A true vertical stabilizer that uses the OEM rudder nearly as-is,
2. A two-piece folding or fully removable horizontal stabilizer,
3. An all-new, two-piece, 6' root chord x 3' tip 'hard wing' using the high-lift, low Cm NACA 43012 airfoil with sharp TE for significant drag reduction vs. OEM TLAR airfoil dacron sock wing,
4. A 3.5 deg wing incidence for a more level boom/tail during cruise flight, further reducing drag,
5. A true dyna-focal engine mount for Rotax 447 and 503 engines,
6. A spring-shock nose wheel with thrust bearing head tube,
7. 4" band brakes on the main gear,
8. Hybrid main axle consisting of 1" x 1/8" wall tube with 3/4" solid stubs for wheelbarrow-type wheels with 3/4" bearings.

Had a 83 C model and always thought a rigid wing would be great. I had envisioned the same wing platform and pivot around center spar. As was, I would pull the ribs, move the TE up to the LE left attatched and sweep up to aft, gathering up the wing fabric to transport. It all fit in a pickup with the tail on. Did the Fisher dacron recover on the tail, added a LE on the elevator. Be great to see yours done and flying.

Because, no ailerons. Wing sweep + dihedral = auto bank for "coordinated" turns with rudder only.

Is that standard to put rubber washers everywhere on a Weedhopper, or is that something you added to cut down on abrasion from vibration?

I assume you're referring to the black items at each tube attachment point. Those are not rubber. They're nylon 6 saddle washers and are used to create a "cradle" to spread the compression forces evenly around the surface of the tubes, rather than have it all concentrated at one small point tangent to where they touch. They also provide a flat to curved transition interface (flat bracket bolted to round tube).

+Dean Scott Oh okay. Such things weren't used at all on our VJ-24W. But a wooden cylinder is put inside the tube at the point to stiffen it and prevent crimping of the tube when a major through bolt goes through it.

Saddle washers reduce the need for anti-crush inserts. I don't have any and made sure I didn't over tighten.

As an aside, someone told me they make their own anti-abrasion washers by cutting up clorex bottles.... a thick tough plastic.

All of that effort to built a wing and not incorporate ailerons? I would. I built and flew a B model back in the late 70's and never did like the 2 axis controls.

Wing sweep and dihedral make ailerons ineffective. Plus I didn’t want to add all the extra weight of pedals, linkages, control horns, hinges, etc. would also make it that much harder to pack and unpack for trailer transport to my side yard “hangar” shed. I’m quite happy with 2-axis control. Some are not and that’s totally OK. Hope it is with you.
