I like how you brought up that effect of how _we_ imagine the '50s now versus how _they actually_ remembered the '50s when Sha-Na-Na debuted. I feel like we're going through that now - or just got done with it? - for the '80s actually. There's the REAL '80s, where there was loads of musical variety and huge stars like Madonna, Michael Jackson, Hall & Oates, and then the "Imagined" or "Stranger Things" '80s where it's all the music nerds like and they artificially emphasize that stuff. The Imagined '80s neglects to show off or deal with the cinema of the time - the era of the ACTION MOVIE! - and just remembers, like, the Last Starfighter and Tron and other stuff the nerds writing it liked. It's all laser grids and smoke machines and dungeons & dragons and keytars and power gloves... stuff like Turbo Kid and Kung Fury. Like, yeah, that stuff and those tropes were there, but they weren't that popular or heavily used EVEN AT THE TIME. The people making these things now focus on the niche stuff _that they cared about_ instead of actual popular culture and blow it up and it distorts what the whole era was like. It's very strange to live through that effect... Also, I knew of Sha-Na-Na because of the Comedy Bang-Bang podcast. The comedian and voice actor Andrew Daly (who's very good; has a TON of different voices he can do) sometimes does a character named Wolfman HotDog who's some kind of loser that _desperately_ wants to become a member of Sha-Na-Na and keeps getting rejected for ever-more-insane reasons. Though as ridiculous as he could be, I do not recall learning about any murders! lol. This was another great, fascinating episode - Thanks for giving me something great to listen to during work yet again, DGO! 😃
