the poor young man standing at the back of the cart at 1:04 looked to have a toothache .. I'm wondering how many people walked around with abscesses, impacted wisdom teeth (no I'm not a dentist :) ..) from what little I've read, dentistry and medicine in general was fraught with wrong beliefs. chloroform was being used but when it was, it made the patient violently sick. good sanitation practices were practically nonexistent-- the Thames was a garbage and sewage disaster. from what I read earlier today, East London was in dire straits. Buildings overcrowded with the poor who paid exorbitant rent, and when they couldn't pay they were evicted. Makes me wonder how the queen and her entourage lived, as well as the other inhabitants of London proper. thank you 40 Historical Files, for these thought provoking pictures.

Great imagery! The era has had a very distinct style, merging the rural with the upcoming modern city. People must have been clearly aware of this elegance. Especially fascinating I find how the image visible from 13:36 conveys a stronger sense of big city than I have experienced it myself close to that spot, in 2003. Not only was the London of the Victorian era of a bigger international importance than the London of today, but a city then generally also still offered bigger distances and bigger differences within itself. You needed long to get into the center, and you found events in that center - say, lectures at a university - which you could not simply transfer to some computer screen elsewhere on the planet via the Internet. So you still had genuine business to settle, especially in such a city and nowhere else. This must have made it an utterly thrilling experience to visit such a place. The streets and whatever sunlight or lantern light able to reach you in them will have assumed a grandiosely cosmopolitan atmosphere. Most of the hats visible from 12:16 certainly will have to be considered as high _bowler_ hats. A top hat has a high cylindrical crown, of which I see only one in the image. A little more color to the clothes would certainly have helped. Gray will have occurred in the Victorian era, but hardly as cleanly consisting just of black and of white as it's here often given (worst example 13:56 et sequentes!). After all, having the clothes just partially colorized lets you thoroughly grasp that you're dealing with shots taken in reality.

You have to remember there were no social services then. No Social Security, no retirement funds, no help for widows & orphans (except workhouses) nothing to help out the poor, sick or old.

🤔 2:38 platform shoes weren't only for the late 70s apparently, or was one leg shorter than the other? 🤔

Well, this tells us nothing matters in life, no matter what you do, what you think, how you live, who you love, everything will be gone one day. Am I depressed ? Anyone?

Yes, it was a tunnel of horror filled with donkeys and with horses. Now there are the motor cars, with their crashes and exhaust fumes. And in rural parts of the world (e.g., in certain parts of China) children still are used for dangerous, hard work. The buildings of the 19th century are anyway still often in place, reminding us how close the Victorian era still is in time. A taste of the horror of the era has made it into our time, particularly, in the form of the London underground with its narrow tunnels. For me - as a tall person -, certain especially narrow passageways of this "tube" in 2003 still have conjured up a terrible psychological oppression.
