All places had been either restored, improved or modernized except 16th St. Station, Oakland.

On some of the pictures i doubt the text is correct. (Eg. Old woman in "Berlin" and the text on the house behind her is English, or "Moussolinis" arrest.) But nevertheless, some pictures are breathtaking.

Always wonderful to look at these old photographs! However, I think the Dorothea Lange photos lose their impact when colorized, but I love the rest.

the one that had the most impact on me: the little girl with the basket, the woman behind her holding the infant close to her chest. second to that picture are the pictures capturing the narrow, worn cobbled walkways. I can hear the sound of people's soles tapping.. how many feet made their way to shops or a doctor's door in darkness, fetching him to tend to a sick child or a birth. I hear too, the concerned voices of the fetchers. thanks 40 Historical Files for these meaningful captures of humanity. A. Genthe and Dorothea Lange were artists .. their canvas the camera's lense.

The photo that impacted me the most was of the two men of the 101st Airborne on June 6, 1944 (dressed as Apaches) getting ready to parachute into St. Mere Eglise, France. My father, Captain Robert L. Jackson, was an Army Air Corp. pilot of C47 named "Eightball" assigned to drop the 101 and 82 Airborne parachutists on that day and the two following days during the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, France. I am writing this comment on June 6, 2024, 80 years later. Dad's remains are in Arlington National Cemetery. He was one of the Greatest Generation, along with these two men.

I noticed a lot of the poor people had really dirty faces. Obviously, they weren't able to bathe properly but I wondered if they purposely smeared dirt and other stuff on themselves for sunscreen and bug repellant. 🤔

My mother, a Londoner, said kids would run around the neighborhood asking " a penny for the guy". For materials to make the effigy. It would later be burned in a bonfire, sometimes later I think fireworks. This would have been 1930-40s.

whenever I see the woman and young man with the fruit cart, I can feel the pain in his cheek.. he looks so uncomfortable through the years. I didn't look at the date of publication of these pictures, but it seems like yesterday I saw them. I don't mind if this collection is a repeat - theres usually something that catches my eye I didn't notice previously. thanks 40 Historical Files..I appreciate the views into the past. God bless everyone!

I am having a problem reading your blurb and then scouring the changes or no changes in each picture. I am getting slower as I age and would appreciate you slowing down from one blurb to another. Love your topics, for I am a history junky. Happy Trails.

I believe that I read that the car in the bombing during the troubles did belong to that man but he and his child were not injured. There were a lot of injuries that day and some fatalities but the man and his son were not injured I don’t think. I’m gonna look it up now. If I’m wrong you will never hear it from me.
