@@dmmmwerd Yep got a 2017 Volt premier with 32K km on it for less than 16k USD in 2019, then the pandemic/east coast gas crisis hit and you couldn't touch a similar one below 25K USD. Knock on wood it's still going strong at over 110k km and >95% battery capacity. (For you PHEV haters, no worries I plug it in daily at work and home, and the range extender is barely broken in)

GM had the right idea, but did a poor job explaining the benefit. Until I realized that 40 miles daily = 14,000 miles annually petrol-free, it didn't compute for me. Jay Leno talking about going 1,000+ miles per gallon commuting finally got my attention. The public is much more aware no of plug-ins (and also aware of the crappy non-Tesla public charging hassles).

I did not wait for the Prime because I feared Toyota would produce very few plug ins like they did with the Rav4 plug in and I'm impatient. Thanks for great content! I sold my 99' Porsche 996 and 16' Volt and bought the Prius, I really like owning all kinds of cars and the new Prius was too hard to pass up. Im not babying the car , using it for equipment repair work and dense city driving all day!

I'm glad they added to the all electric range. 40ish miles is enough to get me through most days in all electric mode. Having it function like a regular car on out of town trips will make this car totally useable in West Texas and other places without much charging infrastructure.

There is plenty of charging infrastructure in West Texas for full EV's.. especially Tesla.. I-10 has been covered by Electrify America for CCS cars... but EA is in general not as reliable. I have been hearing about big markups on these Prius.. That would push me to a Tesla.. which has had its price drop especially on the used market. Reliability would be better on the Toyota... I got 423,000 out of my Prius, friend has 405K on a 13 Prius, and I know someone with a 2019 Prius Prime with 345K on it... cross country courier work. They are SUPER durable.. Just do your scheduled maint. For you needs the Prime would be perfect.

@@kens97sto171 you are correct that Tesla has it covered. I just wish the other networks would fill gaps. There are no non-Tesla DC fast chargers in Big Spring or Lubbock. I go there regularly with either my 2019 i3 Rex or my new Chevy Bolt. The trip would just be a lot easier if those some of those gaps were filled. In the interim, the new Prime seems ok.

As an owner of a Honda Clarity that can get over 50 miles of summer range with a similarly sized battery pack, I bet the Prius Prime will absolutely overperform the 44 mile range estimate.

the clarity is a 17kw battery, this prime is 13.6kw. so i wouldnt say its a similar size. What is more impressive is how much more efficient the prius is over the clarity even in the previous generation considering it is likely the prime can get 50miles on a smaller pack.

17:20 - At least on my 2017 Prius Prime, Eco vs. Normal vs. Power modes are not _entirely_ just about throttle mapping. That’s definitely the main difference, yes, but there are also some more-subtle time-response differences. More specifically, I also find the Eco mode also throttles back a bit after you “step on it,” whereas, in Power mode, the acceleration “keeps on coming,” so to speak. Also, in Power mode, right at the moment you apply the pedal, it gives you a bit more of a “jerk,” whereas in Eco mode, it ever-so-slightly softens the application of power.

I own a Prius and a standard range Model 3. You can now buy a used lower mile Model 3 for low 30s. For the price you'll have a lot more fun in the model 3. I'm saving the Prius for my kids and it does make really long distance trip faster not having to charge but man of man is the M3 so much more fun to drive. If I had $32k to spend, I'd buy a used M3.

I currently own a gen 3 Prius and I gotta say I was impressed with this new generation prime model. As funny as it sounds, I dive mine fast so I was definitely more interested in this Prime version over the normal model. I look forwards to a full review of the Prime, I hope you could give some details as to the fuel economy at 80-ish mph since that is usually what I am driving at. I also think a plug-in hybrid is a better all around vehicle than a full EV.

With Toyota intentionally limiting supply on their most popular models in order to artificially inflate demand and transaction prices, you won't be able to get one any time soon. I tried to buy a Rav4 Prime for over a year, but no dealer would sell me one without an insulting markup, so I wound up buying a Subaru Outback. I even looked for a regular Rav4 hybrid XSE, but get one of those either. Toyota has lost me thanks to the greedy games they're playing.

I was looking into a new Prius and they were only getting a fully loaded one for $38k. I’ve been trying to buy a Lexus NX hybrid for over a year and they are in such low supply, it’s like winning the lottery for the privilege to hand over $48k for a compact SUV. I’m getting frustrated with Toyota. I’m definitely on the verge of just ordering a Tesla exactly the configuration I want and just waiting the 2-3 months to get it. If Toyota offered that, I would have bought a new one over a year ago. Instead I’m just dumping money into my 10 year old cars keeping them up waiting for Toyota to catch up but I’m starting to think they never will.

That way, they can make huge profits without having to chase more market share. It's a huge gamble on their part because customers could turn on them, just like I have.

Great presentation, first time viewer. You answered lots of questions, but I have a few others not covered. For older people would you say seat would be to low, to make it difficult to get out, roof line low and difficult to enter. No mention of the lack of spare tire. Glad to hear your checking the sound level at various speeds, and please compare to other cars. We are on our 2nd Prius and possibly a third.

18:34 - Oh wow: 3.1 miles/KWh? I’ve been seeing more like 4.5 long-term on my 2017, and close to 60MPG, at under 60MPH. However, MPG drops _rapidly_ above 65MPH: at 70-75MPH it’s more like 45MPG. Then again, I drive it very conservatively/efficiently.

I really wish they would offer the smaller wheel size on the higher-trim models, so that you don’t have to take the hit on fuel economy. Personally, I don’t even find the larger wheels more visually attractive.

Been convinced I'd be getting a 2020 Prius Prime, but this video has been awesome and highlighted a lot of positives about this redesign. I love the infotainment screen- feels like we don't get one as big as that in any other Toyota model right now. That said, the lack of a split back is a bit spooky for me. Great video as always!

the dealership is adding a 5-8k mark up on the Prius. you have to wait 3 years for those marks up to disappear. With those prices, you can purchase a used ES300h or RAV4 PRIME (more space)

According to my local Toyota dealer, the Prius Prime won't be available in all states. On the West Coast, CA and OR will receive them, but WA state will not. I've asked for more info about what states the car will be available in, and will reply if I hear back. This isn't something called out by any Toyota materials or review sites that I've seen, so I thought I'd mention it.

Pretty disappointing that it only has a 3.3kw charger. The 4xe has a 7 and it makes a huge difference. The added benefit being that it can go 44 miles, so that is much nicer then the 22 with the 4xe. My 4xe can easily get those 40+ per day by charging. Give or take I guess.

Doesn’t really matter. Most people park it when they get home and plug it in. Charge overnight and then unplug in the morning when they leave for work. Sure you can get some charge when you’re shopping at the mall, but those stalls are always full these days.

Hello Alex, I wanted to thank you for another great review! I am a big fan, and bought my current car - RAV4 Prime - mainly after watching your video. There are a couple of things I would kindly ask to consider adding in though. When discussing cargo practicality, it is very important to be able to fold front passenger backrest flat, so that 8' Ikea furniture pack or a 2"x4"x8' lumber pack for an occasional reno project would fit in. My 2014 Prius could fold that backrest fully flat, and fit in a couch and close a hatch, but I cannot do this in a larger RAV4 Prime. I wonder how this new Prius does this? If the cargo sticks out, the open hatch buzzer cannot be turned off in the RAV4 Prime - a really annoying deficiency. If you put that cargo over the upright backrest, it sticks out right into the windshield, and blocks the right mirror view - quite unsafe. The second thing is the presence or absence of a rear passenger vent (located in the front row central console). Car reviews almost always overlook this or downplay its significance. If it is not there, long distance trips become a torcher for rear passengers in hot or cold weather. If you compensate by turning the AC too hard down or up, it becomes ok at the back, but too cold or too hot at the front. So for a family with a regular rear seat use in hot or cold climate, that rear vent is a real deal breaker. I hope these suggestions can help making great reviews even better!

I didn't know that the driver is supposed to monitor the instrument gauge. The speed limit where I drive is the car in front of you :) BTW will older drives have trouble seeing the readout because it is between short & long vision?

I don't think these will be marked up like last time. The reason why is that everybody and their grandma will be getting a Model 3 instead. This is a nice Prius but you could basically get a Model 3 base for the same price after the federal tax credit, if not cheaper.

This is a great review and it's an exciting new version of the Prius Prime. I have the 2022 PP. There are a lot of places I drive where just a little more EV capacity would get me there and back on just electric power. I do like the look of this better than the previous generations. I also like the fact that it has higher ground clearance. From my perspective, the drawbacks on this version are the loss of cargo capacity and I also wish the infotainment unit had more physical buttons. I have said it before and I will say it again. Toyota needs to put out another Prius C "pregnant hatchback" to give us more cargo room. And if they add some physical buttons to the infotainment (like switching between listening modes, track skip, etc), I will be running to the dealership.

How does the XSE Premium make sense? MSRP with destination is approximately $4000 less than a base Model 3 with destination. Many Toyota dealers will mark the up more than $4000 making it more expensive than the Tesla from the start. The Model 3 is also eligible for a $7500 federal tax rebate and is never marked up over MSRP. The Tesla Supercharger network will make needing the gasoline engine backup not needed for road trips for the majority of car buyers. I don’t see how the XSE Premium makes any financial sense. After dealer markups, even the lower trims may also not make sense. The only way this makes sense is if you can find a Toyota dealer selling them at MSRP *AND* the Prius Prime is also eligible for a significant federal tax rebate that will make the net cost significantly less than a Model 3 after its tax credit.

50 mpg? My 2017 Prius Prime over six years and 60K miles sports a running average of 97.0 mpg. How? I am retired and most of my trips are around town, but with a mix of longer trips since I live in a rural area. Lead-foot reviewers are underestimating the mpg of the Prius Prime. I also don't drive at 80 mph like most in California do. Our speed limit in NY is 65 mph interstate, 55 mph most state touring routes. I am usually at 58 mph on 55 mph roads, and 65 mph on 65 mph roads. I bought the Prius Prime to minimize my consumption of gasoline and I am doing just that. My previous car was a 2007 Prius. The Prime outclasses it by a wide margin. My grandson is still driving the 2007.

I keep my 2016 Chevy Volt Premier 53 mile range compared to this 42. I drive 99% electric so gas hardly used.

Oof, that electric mode 0-60 time is rough. I wasn't expecting 6.6s, but 10+ seconds is significantly slower. This would be an instant buy to replace our ancient Prius if it performed identically in electric or hybrid mode, but alas. Only the Clarity, 2nd gen Volt, and i3 REx do that; and remain the only good plug-in hybrids ever made (imo).

Started watching but then I remembered I won't be buying another new Toyota vehicle as they have decided that subscriptions for features in their vehicles is a good sales idea. It's a good way to sour customers to your entire brand!

I think it might feel more comfortable, to the eye, if the bottom edge of the HUD mimicked the arc of the top of the steering wheel.

That's the thing I hate the most about my Sorrento hybrid is the six speed Auto shifting . It interrupts my outerwear serene drive to work . I miss the effortless power to go I had with a cut in normal driving that I do 95% of rd time .

With the power and economy as well as the relatively low MSRP if they actually made this available with AWD I think I could over look some of the things I dislike such as the lack of a rear wiper.

I took my rear wiper off of my 3rd gen years ago for a more sleek look and better aero. I rarely ever used it Andy way. I think it’s good to just delete it personally. Just need to clean the rear window manually every once in a while.

Alex can you compare this to the 2017 Volt? In that vehicle the you can floor it and it will give you all of the EV HP/TQ. It's much more like a electric vehicle with a motor generator, that can also link up and blend if needed during a long mount climb on a completely depleted battery.

4:10 I’d get the Prius Prime and a good set of snow tires. Skip the useless fake AWD that sends like 10% of power to the rear tires and costs you like 10mpg. Actually I’d completely skip the Prius and get a Bolt EV.

I wonder how that over-the-wheel display is for people with presbyopia and who wear progressive glasses. Will that display be in the medium vision zone or in the distance zone meaning I'd have to tip my head back to get it in the right focus zone.

It will be in the mid zone which is the narrowest part of vision on progressives. Would rather have a normal dash. Then, if you sit far enough away, you can use the wide part of the distance portion. This is why I prefer to drive with single vision lenses. Similar problem arises with the new camera rear view mirrors.

I fail to see the point of any hybrids as most diesels can at least match their fuel economy with less Co2 emissions. I'm driving my 5th full electric over 14 years & have never suffered from range anxiety, I even pull trailers with my EV & do 500 mile journeys!

Modern diesels emissions systems are as fragile as flowers and are a huge pain in the ass and the wallet when they start to fail. Also with a hybrid, you dont have to listen to diesel clatter all the time and deal with pokey acceleration.

Two things I don't like about this vehicle 1. Having to look over the steering wheel to see the instrument panel. 2. The viewing screen makes it hard to clean the dash.

Toyota has a real opportunity to put solar on all trims, even the HEV. The benefits of keeping the 12v and traction battery topped off is invaluable. I want to see solar roofs come to all hybrid models, especially the SUVs with their big roofs. It's fits the whole headache free Toyota ownership when you don't have to worry about your battery draining.

Solar is BS on a car. It almost makes sense until you remember that you might get like 3-4 miles a day, and it will cost $2000+… even over 15 years, if it adds 20,000 miles, that’s finally down to $0.10 a mile. Insanely bad return, on par with 40c/kWh fast charger premium rates.

Hybrid are arguably more eco friendly than EV’s all things considered. Eventually that will change but I think currently there is a massive need for more hybrids while we transition.

Second row headroom is actually 36.4 inches, not 37.2 as shown in the video. It's way smaller all the cars on that list (even the corolla). Data directly from Toyota website.

While the new Prius is definitely more attractive than expected, the numbers are just a little better than the Volt was doing in its second generation. Nothing mind-blowing.
