For 2023 the Toyota Prius has turned over a new leaf. Not only is it more efficient than ever before, calling it better looking is an understatement. Toyota also gives us an improved all-wheel-drive system with a more powerful rear motor and more ground clearance for snow country. Unfortunately, there are now a great number of options beside the Prius for high fuel economy so the question is where does that put the ultimate hybrid?

keep in mind if journalist do an early review, they can't talk about some details due to the "embargo" that limits them talking about certain things. once the embargo is lifted, all info is available.

I am a taxi driver and I love my 2017 Prius 1. It sticks to the road in corners and I am satisfied with the ride quality and if you know how to pack a trunk it can hold quite a lot as you can load it up right to the rear window cavity. This car has a beautiful side profile but the back looks like a '93 Chrysler Concorde. I prefer my squiggly taillights. And the loss of head room and trunk space means it might not be useable as a taxi. The gauge cluster is badly located. I mount my GPS right in front of me which is way safer then having it located to the right in the center of the dash. I am not sure if the central screen can be used as a tablet or not to work with the many taxi apps out there right now. Plus my car has a front mounted battery which makes it so easy to do boost jobs which we offer. I wish Toyota would make a North American taxi cab. They do in Asia. To bad because I love how fast it is.

Thanks for sharing your real world experience. This new Prius will be a disaster as a taxi. I would have thought it would be impossible to offer a 4 door car with less rear seat headroom than the cramped Corolla but somehow Toyota has done it! As a taller person and taxi customer, I wish Toyota would bring back the Prius V or bring over the purpose-built JPN taxi. Many taxi drivers in my area are switching to RAV4 Hybrids which are decently sized but as you already know, they will burn 20% more gas in urban driving.

I can't believe I'm saying this; but in this generation, I prefer the Prius to the Niro. The Prius is better looking than in the past; but the main down tick for the Niro in Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid forms is that DCT. It doesn't matter how much work Kia does, DCTs are by design self-destructive. You aren't going to get 100k + miles out of a DCT, but the planetary gear set Toyota uses in their hybrid system has shown itself to be rock solid. Add in more power, which has always been the main problem with the Prius (along with WTF aesthetics) makes this generation Prius a better choice.

A common consesses on the reviews has been rearview visibility is now considerably worse, and the loss of cargo space is disappointing. looking at it the rear glass doesn't even have the windshield wiper isn't there anymore either so they anticipate you using the rearview camera, that is only offered as an option on the Limited, and the rear itself looks more barren for no pane of glass, and the license plate on the bottom, meaning the hatch is actually higher up. There is a light bar where that glass pane was though. In short I agree they made some major compromises in the rear area for the new look.

I don't know why folks are worried about the trunk space, it's a trunk not a boudoir, take out the load floor and styrofoam and put down a thin moving blanket or something of the sort and voila, maximum trunk space! @@anydaynow01 Beyond the fact spare tires aren't back there anymore, I agree you can remove that stuff to make up the cargo room back. The only real qurrel at that point is the hatch isn't as tall, so you don't have that even loading platform anymore.

Agree, 15.1 cu ft of trunk space is in real world applications more practical than 20.anything cu ft of lift-back cargo space. Alex made a mistake too, when saying that this has more cargo room than the Honda Civic. The Civic hatch, has a relatively "enormous" cargo area for a hatch/small SUV coming in at 25.7 cu ft with the seats up.
@musicalhistory4392
@musicalhistory4392 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, although the Camry hybrid trunk is still smaller, and the Prius now is going to have marginally better performance than the Camry. It appears with back seats down there will be more cargo space relatively speaking, but they haven't posted that yet.
@musicalhistory4392
@musicalhistory4392 Жыл бұрын
@Phillip Banes It appears to be the new hatch is higher up for the license plate being below it, it's going to make loading it slightly harder and while I understand the flat base area, they should have either put a spare tire in there or gone back to the gen 3 design and put an extra cargo holder instead of that useless Styrofoam base, I guess owners are expected to figure it out for themselves.

I just received my 2024 Prius XLE with upgraded multimedia center, panoramic window & all terrain mats yesterday. I got it for a flat $40,000, not $30,000+. There’s a shortage of the new Toyota Prius & most dealerships don’t even have one on site. I ordered mine on October 30th, was told it would ship from Japan & take 4-6 weeks. It took 5 weeks for mine. It’s a beautiful vehicle but just know that you’ll have to order it & wait. Gone are the days where you could go to a lot, pick your vehicle & drive it home all in the same day. I’m in North Carolina, not sure about other states.

However, it has a 12.3" screen, HUD, and a few nice things on it. This new Prius is not enough for him to Trade Up. Especially since Loan Rates have gone up. We have a 2.24% rate (on our 2022 RAV4 Limited and my son has a 2.49% rate. It is a big difference today. What is the rate today? 5.49%? And that is if you have a good standing. Exactly, my aging family wagon is nearing the end and I thought that perhaps the next car we'll downsize to a sedan with a roomy trunk/backseat. Or something sporty/fun to drive like a Civic hatchback that has a "large" 25.4 cu ft "trunk." Prius was a contender, but that's a very small hatch/trunk. I would bet if you took measurements of the load floor and the height of the seatbacks, it's not even close to 20 cu ft...form like 10 or 12. Manufacturers take a lot of license when measuring cargo capacity of hatchbacks and liftbacks!
@Eldaino999
@Eldaino999 Жыл бұрын
@Phillip Banes we have two kids. Marc brings up an excellent point: even with the added fuel economy, it’s hard to opt for something like this when the civic hatchback is right there, with interior measurements that put some small cuv’s to shame. And as much as the dynamics are improved on the new Prius, the new civic hatchback will still out handle it, especially when it’s shod with skinny 195 series tires. You can get a civic sport hatch for 27k, after dealer markup, the difference in price buys a lot of gas for the civic lol. I’m just saying, there are some cars that do the big-small car thing better (civic, hrv, previous Prius) than others (new Prius, Mazda 3, cx30) for small families.

Sure it's 175 hp vs 196 hp for the prius but i think the XLE/ XSE Camry hybrid provides better value for money. No question. AWD is nice to have but not a must have with good snow tires which are available for the Camry. Not for the Prius in the 19" at least, i have to see about the LE which also has a spare tire oddly enough and 17" wheels

I want to know more about the cargo space. With the rear seat up, the rear cargo space sounds smaller than the past. But what about with the rear seat folded down? What about the inside maximum length? In my Gen 2 Prius I can put a few pieces of 8 foot long lumber (I JUST hauled eight 2x4s), rear to dashboard between the seats (wrapped in a moving blanket to protect the upholstery), and 10ft pipes (a 10ft gutter pipe fit) if I carefully put the end on top of the dashboard to the corner just under the windshield. I don't remember for sure, but seemed like I once fit a 4x4 sheet of plywood diagonally in the back (it's only about 40" between the wheel wells). Like what other non-SUV/truck can you put a 10ft pipe in? These are all common homeowner Home Depot run cargo tasks that I and a million others occasionally do, no truck needed. For me, the Prius has ALWAYS been more about functionality over beauty. How many SUVs will get 55 MPG while commuting to work. I'd prefer to only own 1 car for all my uses, and my Gen 2 Prius had done a very good job for many years, while getting 45 MPG on the daily commute.

You keep mentioning the Camry Hybrid gets over 50 mpg but that is only in the base LE trim which is pretty stripped down. All the other trims get 47 or worse most likely due to wheels/tires and weight. So this new Prius still has a decent edge in mpg. I'd still rather have the Camry but just saying.

The tank is 11.3 gallons. 57 mpg combined. So 644 miles. I’m curious why you want to know this number. For gas vehicles I can’t think of a reason why it would matter, although it must. I see it being very useful for electric vehicles.

@@stone_pilot Probably for a non-stop drive like from say SF to LA (just take a bathroom break). There's also battery deterioration, I guess, but from I know from my 2010 Prius, it's not something to be really concerned about until like 7-10 years/100-150k miles. So basically, don't worry about it.

@@stone_pilot because EPA gas mileage is just a ballpark figure. Some drivers in some terrain will likely get 60+, some 40ish. However I do wish EVs presenters would start talking about the pleasure of driving a comfortable car and going where they want to go with no drama....instead of spending 90% of the road test time touring the great charging stations, parking lots and back alleys of America. @@stone_pilot Another review puts the tank at 10.5 gallons, but even if you use the lower end MPG for the higher trims and 10.5 gallons, you're still taking about over 500 miles on a tank.
@stone_pilot
@stone_pilot Жыл бұрын
@@theexmann Right. Personally, I don't see why anyone wants to know what the range is. Range matters on an electric vehicle precisely because charging stations are rare-ish, at least rare enough that you have to plan around them. A gasoline vehicle you don't really have to worry about it. You see you're at a quarter tank? Okay, let's pull over at the next gas station and take a leak while we're at it. In a prius, you probably don't even need to pull over till you're at an 1/8th of a tank.

Alex, can you clear something up for me... Why are PHEVs typically more performance oriented than HEV? PHEVs are a bit of a mystery to me, from a use and benefit standpoint. If I understand correctly, the battery is only charged by plug, the engine provides no electricity to the battery pack whatsoever? When the PHEV battery is depleted, it's only propulsion cones from the ICE? I would think that going with an HEV system would be more convenient all the way around, in regards to hybrid systems, but they don't seem to get the performance improvements their PHEV brethren get. Why is that? Thanks man, always enjoy the content.
@jake1110
@jake1110 Жыл бұрын
PHEV's drive exactly like HEV's when their battery is depleted. A plug is not needed at all for charging, but obviously once you're home it makes sense to charge back up with a plug. A PHEV will regen charge via braking and the ICE running just like HEV. it will only assist the ICE when it's depleted/low. Most PHEV's allow you to control the behavior too, you can opt to use battery power only, or save battery power for later, or drive like a HEV. I've had both HEV and PHEV and PHEV is perfect for me. 90% of my driving is on electric. For out-of-town trips, I get good fuel economy. The only downside is the normal maintenance of an ICE vehicle is still needed.

I totally disagree with you In a lot of comments you made. I love the look of the 2017 Prius and the wow factor of the interior with the white of the 2017. These plain blasé black interiors. I’m sick of them and everyone has them. I loved the exterior of the 2017 because of its futuristic look, and you could tell it was a Prius because nobody had the same look and now the Prius will look like Honda and Kia and every other model so I am a thumbs down on the new one. I love the heads up display. I wish they had come out with CarPlay earlier and I am still waiting for them to put signals in the Sideview mirrors. And now they still don’t have those lights in the Sideview mirrors. What are they waiting for? Everyone has them. Closing up the cargo. Space smaller is not my idea of a positive as we travel a lot in our 2017 Prius. I never ever thought our Prius was ugly and I resent that because they sold a lot of them and we all didn’t think our cars were ugly.

Going back to its inception, what Toyota was able to do with the Prius was take an entirely new and unproven platform, and show the world (through the years) that it was not only fuel efficient, but that it was also rock solid dependable, and would easily last 10 or more years. Having earned a good reputation, the Prius is now solidly slotted to continue its domination of this segment. The fact that they made it more powerful, and more attractive is icing on the cake.
