What an episode! I watched this right after watching the Churchill documentary on Netflix, and somehow I see similarities between the two. The truth is, great leaders like Tun and Churchill are often perceived as treacherous, evil, or even fascist because they make the tough, sometimes unpopular decisions. That’s what sets them apart-they’re willing to take the heat, shoulder the blame, and even alienate people if it means doing what they believe is right for their nation. Leadership isn’t about being universally liked; it’s about having the courage and conviction to chart a course, especially when the stakes are high. Whether it’s navigating a war, like Churchill, or steering a nation through economic turmoil and political challenges, like Tun, these decisions require a level of resolve and vision that many of us will never fully understand. So, while it’s easy to critique or joke about their flaws, it’s also worth recognising the immense pressure they’re under and the legacy they leave behind. Tun is truly a man of the century-a leader who didn’t shy away from making hard calls to shape Malaysia’s destiny, even if it meant ruffling a few feathers along the way.

Your question about why he didnt manage education as well as he should have is spot on. His answer is a cop out. True answer, his gov education system was to keep the rakyat stupid and dependent on the gov as a control measure. No meritocracy or equal opportunity. Quota system introduced to give priority to one race, the passing mark dumbed down to allow failed students to pass and overseas scholarships to prioritise one race. Serious brain drain was the result. Singapore and Malaysia had the same history, where are we now compared to Singapore? His NEP, all his tongkats once given, very difficult to take back. He has done too much damage to the fabric of our society, divide and rule stance resulted in racial disharmony. He thinks he's the only one qualified to run the country. Everybody else does a bad job. He wants all succeeding PMs must be his puppets doing exactly what he directs.

Those who disgreed with his way of governance and more politically aware have very low respect of him ! Tun M didnt answer to the point for a few questions like the NEP issues ,the education matters etc. And the reason he gave to why he lost his deposit in the last election in Langkawi is absolutely ridiculous! He should know the real reason why he lost ! The rakyat has rejected him !

When people break their leg and use crutches, its only temporary and will heal very fast if you are doing the right thing and also taking own initiative instead relying on medication/crutches to walk. There is something wrong if you get all the helps yet still need to use the crutches.

He was the Education Minister from 1974 to 1978. In 1977, many Sabahans (North Borneon) students failed their national school Form 3 LCE exam because BM was suddenly made compulsory to pass even though 1977 was the last year of English Education (English Medium). No wonder Sabah was short of professionals..and still is until today. Shame on you!

Obviously the miners obtained the right to mine tin ores from the government of the time. It was not an issue of Malays giving away the mining land to Chinese. There were only a few persons who ran the tin mines. The happened to be Chinese and that do not all miners Chinese. The identity politics is what Mahathir believes in. So while he was in power, when he knew that some Chines were super rich, he took it and still taking it that all Chinese are rich. He is the person who causes racial polarization in the country.

Really good insight into how Tun M thinks and operates... could listen for hours. I can never reconcile how he talks so positively to then some of the things he has done. The affirmative action ... and the idea of different benefits for citizens based on their ethnicity is awful. Trying to solve one problem and creating twenty more in the process. As they mentioned he should be applauded for doing something... but I don't know if we will ever be able to unwind and fix the damage done.

At the expense of others. No different than apartheid. Injustice & unfairness to the core. Then quotas system has turned into 100% obvious racial and religious discrimination. The reality and truth. Also, shame is not in their vocabulary. Why no comments on GISH case or those rakyat who had died or missing to serve justice to them. Double standard is already injustice. A good leader must be FAIR to all. Then again, those who benefited from him will surely like him or any leaders that benefited them including infamous 'bossku'.

Thank you Datuk Sri Idris Jala for your views on NEP. The policy should be need based not race / religion. The children of the forefathers of Malaya - Chinese & Indians who built Malaya ground up should not continue to be discriminated in Civil Service, Scholarships, Govt Business tenders GLCs, Petronas and new opportunities. This discrimination is now over 40 years and time that the majority assist the minorities. Datuk Seri Idris & DS Anwar Ibrahim are fair minded M'sians, who refused to accept scholarships for their children. Rich Malays should not grab scholarships meant for the poorer families esp. Chinese & Indians. Hope the Govt. will include all Malaysians of all races in public service opportunities. Malaysia is perhaps the only country in the world that discriminate against its minorities races. After all Malaysia is a very rich country and helping its minorities will not hamper its finance, in any way. Otherwise, other countries will see it as sheer racism, spite or a form of Apartheid Malaysia Style. Datuk Sri Idris Jala would make a fantastic Prime Minister of a New United Malaysia.

Mahathir's point about needing to learn Science and Math in English is correct (because we want direct access to new research every day, without having to wait for translations). However, this is for the degree/university level, and it might also be good for high school level (especially for the top 20% students). At the primary school level, we just want to teach the foundations, which haven't changed in 100 years. This basic knowledge needs to be understood intuitively by the kids, through storytelling in their mother tongue. If we use English, the learning curve is even steeper because English is also a language they are still learning.

No such problem for Singapore Malays and Brunei Malays. They're so happy using English to learn math science subjects. 👍✌️

Indeed, it does; the person who initiated all this Bumipurata nonsense is none other than our own Mahathir. This individual and his family are nothing but corrupt. I personally know a few people who have had to endure his ridiculousness. My grandfather, who was involved in the ERL project, often discusses the bribery Tun wanted before finalizing the deal. Why are the Malays unable to work like other races to achieve success, and why is the system manipulated to benefit only the Malays? it shouldn't come at the expense of other races.

He’d rather feed fodders to the Malays who forever need him to feed them. Meanwhile his own children can speak very good English.

This is a full English interview. Hence the folks listening are of different demographic. Yet the majority may not be able to appreciate this type of conversation and argue why English instead of BM. This majority demographic is a reflection of Tun M's policy of overly emphasized on majority protectionism policies esp in education. While he has done good, leadership favoring the majority to the point of allowing lowering of standards for masses vs the minorities has still not resolve the Malay Dilemma. We do not have a large middle class group that has the aptitude to think, strategize, execute, mantain and adjust where it matters.
